FOTD -- January 15, 2009 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Once again on Wednesday, too much work meant too little time for the FOTD. Today's image shows a minibrot that appears to have something wrong with it. The minibrot is located on a filament in the eastern suburbs of the large minibrot on the main stem of the four-dimensional HyperMandelbrot set. Everything is normal until we approach the boundary of the minibrot, where instead of a sharp fractal edge, we find a fade- off to a circular area of smoothness. This might be an artifact of imprecision, but if so, it is the most precise imprecision I have ever come upon. I rated the over-hurried image at a 5, and named it "Something is Wrong". The calculation time of 26 seconds makes up for any lack of quality or lack of interest. FOTD -- January 14, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: An unexpected last-minute change on a job we thought was already finished left little time for fractal diversion on Tuesday. But the MandAutoCritInZ formula makes interesting fractals almost automatically, and using it, I found an emergency image in a few minutes. The parent fractal is one of those double minus things with a prominent fan extending east from the origin. Today's image is located in a small valley at the edge of the fan. I named the image "Less Than Nothing", which probably refers to the effort I put into it. The rating of a 7 seems fair. The calculation time of 9 minutes may be avoided by surfing to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the finished image there. Cloudy skies, a temperature of freezing and occasional periods of snow kept the fractal cats in poor spirits here at Fractal Central on Tuesday. FOTD 13-01-09 (The Missing Stem [8])

FOTD -- January 13, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: This month is January, not July. To atone for the error I made yesterday, we have a fractal that can not only be considered different, but is also one of the smoothest colored of all time. Unfortunately, with a palette of only 256 colors and only half the colors actually appearing in the image, the bands are still visible, but they are subtle enough that they almost disappear. The image consists totally of 'inside' stuff made visible by the 'bof60' inside fill. Changing the 'bof60' to 'numb' or 'maxiter' results in a totally blank screen with only a few tiny left-over dots of 'outside' stuff. The other active inside fills also give interesting effects, and are worth a try. The name "The Missing Stem" refers to the figure at the center, which is a true Mandelbrot set with only its main stem missing. The rating of an 8 includes a reward of a full point for the hour of tweaking I did to get the colors as smooth as possible. The calculation time of 21 seconds is brief enough to cause no frustration. The finished image is posted on the FOTD web site to make it even simpler to see the image. Today's image is the first one created with a new formula, the DivideBrot6Julia, which draws the Julia aspects of the strange near-Mandelbrot set created by the DivideBrot6 formula. And speaking of near-Mandelbrot sets, today's image is the Julia set of a point in the East Valley of a small minibrot on the main spike of one of these strange things. And yes, I realize it looks nothing at all like a Julia set of the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, but what good would fractals be if they always did the expected. I have lost track of the shortest calculation time in FOTD history. The 8 seconds of today's image must be close to the record however. The name "Julia Starburst" accurately describes the image. The rating of a 7-1/2 seems about right for an image that took about a little less than no effort to create. Daniele, Tim, Rich Thompson's 'Fractint for Windows' and the current DOS Fractint version can both overcome the limit of 2048 pixels by using a configuration file to allow the creation process of fractals to use disk files and or RAM instead of the screen. (This statement is technically a bit too simple -- but let's keep it simple.) The configuration file is named: FRACTINT.CFG and is located in the directory (folder) where 'Fractint for Windows' or Fractint for DOS is installed. Fractint's configuration file data layout is pretty understandable -- just duplicate one of the existing Disk Video entries and change the "x" and "y" values -- and remove any duplicate key bindings. This works in both versions. I recommend that you don't modify any of the existing specifications in the file -- just add any resolutions you need. If you do make changes to your FRACTINT.CFG file, make a backup copy before you begin making your changes. (I'm a lazy file backup person -- I just right click the file and choose 'Copy'; then I right click 'white space' in the same folder (where there is no file name) and choose 'Paste'.) If you are not familiar with the Fractint configuration file concept, here is what the program does: - For images that fit on the screen, Fractint will display the image while it is being calculated. - For fractals that are too large to be displayed while they are being calculated, Fractint creates the image using RAM and/or hard disk drive space on your computer. The line number of the current line of pixels being generated is displayed during the image calculation (remember, there is no image being displayed.) You still must save your image after the image is completed. - Resolutions calculated using RAM and/or hard disk drive are identified in 'Fractint for Windows' beta 5's file as: "Win32 Disk Video". The DOS version of the program lists these resolutions as: "Disk/RAM 'Video'" Notes: - You don't need to specify a key binding (1st entry on the line) for your new resolutions. - Don't specify duplicate key bindings. - There is an additional entry on each line in the 'Fractint for Windows' format of FRACTINT.CFG compared to the DOS FRACTINT.CFG file format. Appended to the end of each 'Fractint for Windows' line is either: ",disk" or ",gdi" (the driver). - Order in the file is not important. However, the order of lines in the file is the order that the resolution choices will be presented to you when you press the <del> key in Fractint. - Don't use the <tab> character in the file. - Remember, images of resolutions that are *not* shown in the list of Video Mode choices as "Disk Video" *cannot* be read back into Fractint and displayed on the screen. (Sorry for the double negative above -- the positive version: Only images of resolutions that *are* shown in the list of Video Mode choices as Disk Video can be read back into Fractint and displayed correctly.) - Use a general purpose image viewer to see your Fractint images that are not of Fractint screen-viewable resolutions. - In 'Fractint for Windows' sometimes comments (next to the last field on the line) that you enter into the file do not appear in the list of resolutions displayed by the program. - I don't know what the limit on the maximum x and or y pixel dimensions are in Disk Video mode in 'Fractint for Windows' or DOS Fractint. - I have successfully calculated images of 8192 x 8192 pixels in 'Fractint for Windows' and 5120 x 4096 -- which is (1280 x 1024) x 4 pixels in DOS Fractint. I re-sized the 5120 x 4096 image in an image viewing program using a built-in smoothing algorithm and got an anti-aliased image of 1280 x 1024 pixels as the result. This image has greatly reduced 'pixilation'. Example of adding lines to FRACTINT.CFG: (with a bunch of spaces removed so the lines won't wrap around during emailing.) FOTD -- January 11, 2009 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I don't know quite what to make of today's image, which gives me a rather queasy feeling. I named it "Threads of Passion" which has nothing at all to do with a suggestive outfit. Not knowing what to make of the image, I could not decide how to rate it. The question mark leaves it to the individual viewer to decide a rating. The image is just different enough to qualify as an FOTD, and its calculation time of an incredibly fast 22 seconds makes running the included parameter file not only a breeze, but a full-blown typhoon. Those who dislike high winds may view the image, already calculated, on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A temperature of 27F -3C and an all day snow spoiled the planned events in the Fractal Central area of the Susquehanna Valley on Saturday, but the forecast foot (30cm) of snow failed to pile up, leaving us with a not very impressive 5 inches (12cm). The fractal cats wondered why the outside world looked so different. My day was occupied by graphics work and thoughts about clearing the sidewalk, which I will put off until tomorrow, when the next FOTD will appear in a blaze of glory. spanky fractal database problems

There were several bad power-bumps on site over the Christmas break and it took a toll. After about spinning almost continuously for 20 years, the system disk is showing a hardware failure. I'm not sure what this means in the long term, as I may be able to build another, but it won't happen anytime soon. I'll be away from the site until February. It may be time to retire the system.
