Thus it is simpler: Buddhabrot_ { reset=2004 type=mandelcloud passes=1 center-mag=-0.300522/-4.44089e-016/0.8079007/1/-90/-1.23373533611470521e-014 params=751 float=y maxiter=751 fillcolor=0 inside=0 outside=summ sound=off } A BASIC script prints out the whole thing as a literal string, but the params and maxiter numbers are variables; a simple loop varies them from 2->751 and prints out all the PAR entries to one file, along with a BAT file which runs fractint and references the entries sequentially. XFRACTINT? I tried it a few years ago when I was investigating linux. It didn't seem to be as fast or as versatile as DOS fractint so I shelved it. I'm still waiting for 64 bit Fractint ... In the mean time, I've finally got ultrafractal to read some of my fractint pars, like for the universe sequences, but I have to hack them up a bit. Maybe I can re-render the U3 viddie in 32 bit color if I can get it right. But I don't know if current systems can be run 24/7/365; they are not as robust as older systems and tend to overheat. I can fix that, but the rendering time should be much quicker since a windows app can take advantage of the full proc capabilities and 32 bit memory addressing, but they actually render slower than fractint. Don't know why that is ... JoTz .

FractInt for Windows (beta 4) -- open for testing

Welcome to the FractInt Makeover! For those of you on the fractint list that may not have heard, I've been overhauling the FractInt source base to move it out of the 16-bit DOS world. Things have been progressing nicely and I'm now at a point where I think widespread testing would be helpful. Download and install beta 4 of FractInt for Windows: <http://tinyurl.com/26dvd7> I've just resubscribed to the fractint list so you can send bug reports to me or to the list. If you have any doubt, just send any bugs to me. A memory dump file will be produced upon a crash, but that shouldn't be happening anymore :-). This is what I would call "Phase I" of the overhaul. It is a migration of the existing DOS source base to a 32-bit Windows application. The user interface looks and acts like DOS because it is just a port of the DOS ui. A minimal amount of "Windows-ification" has been done, but you'll notice a lack of normal Windows things like a menu bar, context menu, paying attention to the mouse, dialog boxes, etc. The next phase will be to backfill these changes into the X Window System version to make all these features available to xfractint. Once that is tested, the beta will be over and a new release made. Known Issues There is no sound output support. There is no mouse support. Panning and zooming is by keyboard only. Video modes with pixel dimensions other than 4/3 aspect ratio assume non-square pixels. The images all render fine, but they appear stretched or squashed. The choice of resolutions in fractint.cfg reflect this. With debugflag=10000, error messages are reported for disk video mode when: start fractint, pick any disk video mode (e.g. 320x200), let it render, wait for completion, then go to the <v> screen, change 320 to 32, submit it. Without the debugflag settings, FractInt for Windows will most likely crash. This problem is present in the DOS fractint and not a result of the port. There are a few gaps in functionality associated with fractal types that were computed via assembly language, but these were mostly integer versions of some of the more common fractal types. (I was intending to make this announcement with the next full release of Fractint. But I am likely to be moving soon from the capital of the Republic of Georgia, Tbilisi, to Georgia's (and Europe's) highest village, Ushguli, a place which does have good electricity but has no easy or cheap internet solutions. I'll be accessing the internet solely through my cellphone, and leaving my desktop computer behind to be used for scanning my huge collection of 35mm negatives. So there's no time like the present.) Ah, the rich inner life of a humble square... Am I really the first person to discover this feature of IFS? If one begins with an Iterated Function System (IFS) which simply fills in solid, there may seem nothing further to do to alter this uninteresting result. But boredom can sometimes lead to experimenting, with unexpected results. In 2001, I discovered that if a square IFS is divided into several holons with no space between them, they will simply fill the square solid. But a bit of play can give the square an infinite variety of rich fractal interior textures. This is done solely by altering the number corresponding to the proportion of each holon of the square - for Fractint IFSs, the last of 7 numbers on each line. Make your solid-filed IFS, save the .ifs file (for Fractint), then change the numbers in a text editor. I was amazed at the richness and variety of the patterns I was seeing - truly an infinite set, as the numbers can be made arbitrarily different. The best results seem to happen when these proportion numbers still sum up to 1, as is normal, and the alteration is from 0.04 to 0.06, subtracting and adding the chosen amount from an equal number of numbers to leave the total unchanged. Contrast can be varied as well, by choosing alterations outside this range, the texture fading in from the solid square (or other initial shape) to an extremely high-contrast pattern. Two or more sets of solid squares can be superimposed and then altered. The idea works for other shapes as well, but it can be tricky to get to a solid filled shape if the angles are not all 90 degrees: either very careful calculation is needed, involving trigonometry, or a snap-to feature when drawing the holons. Further, *animations* from one texture to another are implied, by incrementing numbers sufficiently smoothly between the desired start and end textures. Only the numbers need to be altered; or the whole group of holons may be varied; one or more of these may be gradually added or subtracted, even flipped or rotated. In each case, one can make an animation to show the transition. I first stumbled across the idea of varying IFS proportion numbers while seeking ways to make the well-known Dragon Curve (DC) and Twindragon (TD) more interesting by giving them fractal-textured fills, as I had learned to do with these 2 and other tiles in L-system programming. I achieved what I was aiming for easily enough - but the same idea, applied to filled-in squares and other regular polygons, was a complete surprise and delight. ANIMATION Any IFS can be incrementally altered into any other for an animation, with the intervening steps arbitrarily many, as many as required. If the 2 IFSs have the same number of holons, and the elements in one IFS have each a counterpart in the other IFS as far as orientation, the process is simply a matter of incrementing the size and location of all holons between the two. If orientations are not matched, or numbers of holons are not equal, there is an extra step. An extra holon is introduced for each additional required holon or change in orientation, initially of zero thickness or width. These extra holons are gradually increased in thickness - and if the total number of holons must remain constant, as in performing a change in orientation only, the holon being replaced is gradually reduced in thickness simultaneously, until it has been fully replaced. If an actual addition of one or more holons is required, they are enlarged from zero thickness until they occupy their needed positions. This process is crying out for some automation... with the added optional constraint, especially for textured squares, of keeping all the animation frames within the start and end squares' size and shape. To run the pars below: 1. Cut, paste and save the par entries in a text editor as squares-.par, putting it where your other Fractint .par files are. 2. Cut, paste and save the ifs entries in a text editor as squares-.ifs ( squares.ifs is already being used), putting it where your other Fractint .ifs files are. 3. Finally, run the first par. Save its colour map as firecode.map where your other .map files are, and then you can run the remaining pars. . Kim, Hang on to those old machines! Or get an old used one (on the web, computer shows, repair shops - they are everywhere!). You can get pentium-2,3 machines for < $100. Set it up with Win9X and you can use the fractint you love. I can easily render 1600x1200 on my P2-300, which is 10 years old. My P3-733 with Win98SE actually runs fractint much faster than either P4 unit. .

Kim, It is difficult enough to make these things work at all; including backward compatibility forever (like for DOS, 16 bit apps) just makes it more difficult and error prone. Since very few people use legacy software, it simply isn't worth the effort, so thinks the powers that be. My understanding now is that Vista will not do DOS or 16 bit apps at all. We are on the verge of a 64 bit world! .

FOTD -- April 29, 2007 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Fractal fans take note. Today's image was created with a new formula, MandelbrotMixImag, which mixes various parts of real and imaginary powers of Z. I have attached the new formula below. START NEW FORMULA------------------------------------------------ MandelbrotMixImag {; Jim Muth z=p3, c=fn1(pixel), a=real(p1), b=imag(p1), d=real(p2), f=imag(p2): z=a*(z^b)+d*(z^flip(f))+c, |z| <= 100 } END NEW FORMULA-------------------------------------------------- In today's image, which is really only a test, I have added 0.05 part of Z^(i) to Z^2 to create a parent fractal that resembles a degenerate Mandelbrot set shattered almost beyond recognition. Today's image is located in the fragmentary stuff filling most of the main bay of the M-set. I named the image "Fearsome Forest" though there is very little in it that might cause fear. Actually, the image resembles nothing as much as the edge of a fantastic forest that might grow on the earth-like planet that was recently discovered. After not too much thought, I rated the image at a 6. The lack of a central midget cost one point. The render time of 2-1/2 minutes is appropriately fast for such an image. And as always, the finished image is available for viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The fractal cats once again showed unusual interest in the weather here at Fractal Central on Saturday. But I saw nothing unusual in the cloudy sky and temperature of 59F 15C. The cats must know something I don't. For now, I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that there will be no FOTD for April 30, when I will be on the way back to Old Fractal Central. The good news is that if I can get the old computer which I left there to work, the FOTD will return on Tuesday, May 01. Until then, take care, and be at peace with all things. Fractint for Windows

Problem just arrived this morning.. The latest beta seems to have been running fine excepting for overlapping names in the PAR menu. Now, however I'm getting a message "Unexpected error, crash dump saved to. (**** this is not a misprint***, my parentheses) Please include this file with your bug report" . Unfortunately this must have slithered off to some distant corner of my system and cannot be found. This is followed by a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library message Buffer overrun detected! Progrm ...Stone Soup Group\Fractint for Windows\fractint.exe A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue and must be terminated. Corruption in my computer? It want start to smell, will it? John W.

About the only sure way that I can think of is to find someone who owns a recent machine that has been shown to create higher resolution fractals under Fractint. Then use Craig's list or eBay to purchase a machine that has that exact video card in it. I know that it is possible to put a second video card into a computer, so in theory one could install an older card that supported the higher resolution DOS video modes into a computer that has a video card that does not support these video modes. Newer computers now have different connectors to plug cards into, so the new machine needs to have a connector compatible with the older video card being installed into the new computer. However, I do not know how to force 'switching' between these video cards -- or if that is even possible in all cases. One other problem with video 'cards' is that often, current computers are manufactured with their video and audio chip sets on the main system board for cost reasons. Being able to 'turn off' these factory built-in functions and to get Windows to recognize a newly-installed card to replace these functions takes detailed knowledge and in some cases cannot be done at all. I note that Sylvie Gallet says that Windows Vista appears to not support the DOS version of Fractint. I pasted her message below my signature. Some good news is that there is a 'Fractint for Windows' being worked on right now and a fairly stable beta is available. It is intended to work on essentially any current computer's video card and on any version of Windows. This is because it writes to the video card using Windows drivers and graphics modes, not DOS graphics modes. The current beta (beta 5) is a first pass at creating a fully windowed version of Fractint. The current user interface is simply the DOS version text windows displayed in their current DOS form with the image being calculated resizing the window as needed. Keyboard commands work normally. The current 'Fractint for Windows' does not have mouse support, but movement of the zoom box and cursors can be done using the arrow keys (with and without the <ctrl> key being held down.) Richard of the Fractint Development Team did a lot of work to get the this functionality working under windows. I myself have not used beta 5 'Fractint for Windows' very much, but judging from the postings on [Fractint] from others, there are people using it successfully. Further development is planned. These allow you to create high resolution images without them being written to the video card. I use this feature every day to create Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day at a resolution of 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 with DOS Fractint. This feature completely gets around having to have a video card show the image while it is being calculated. My older computer with DOS Fractint will display images this large, but only if they take up the entire screen. The images no longer calculate or are corrupted if I try to shrink the image into a window to allow me to look at email, etc. So I simply use a Fractint Disk 'Video' Mode to calculate my larger images. Since the window showing the image calculation is simply a text status window I am able to shrink it to a small window and read my email, surf the web, etc. When Fractint's status window says, "The image has been completed" I can maximize the window to full screen and save the image and reload it into a visible video mode in DOS Fractint on my older machine. My newer machine would require me to view the large image that I calculated using Disk Video Mode using a different image viewing program. This is not too great a problem since you can keep both the image viewing program and Fractint for Windows open and running at the same time. Fractint's documentation has more information about Disk Video Modes. You can even define your own X and Y resolutions of Disk Video Modes. I have done this and it works well. Please ask me if you have any further questions about Disk Video Mode. Incidentally, I just tested adding a new set of X and Y resolutions in a Disk Video Mode of Richard's beta 5 version of Fractint for Windows. I added 2048 x 1536 pixels. It created the image correctly and I viewed it in an image viewing program. FOTD -- April 28, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's fractal we travel to a world that until now I have virtually ignored -- the world of fractals created with complex exponents of Z. We need only the manzpower formula of Fractint to do this. To begin exploration we check the fractal created by the formula Z^(2+0.1i)+C. This addition of a small imaginary value to the formula of the classic Mandelbrot set makes a world of difference in the appearance of the parent fractal. Instead of the pure M-set, we see a distorted version of it, with Seahorse Valley split into two separate parts. Today's image is located along the flat edge of what appears to be the remains of the north branch of the valley. I named the image "Bolt From the Blue" because of the stylized lightning bolts zig-zagging through the scene. I rated it at a 7 because I kind of enjoy it. At the center there is a small Mandelbrot midget, which has not yet suffered much distortion, though if the imaginary part of the exponent were to be increased much beyond the value in today's formula, the midgets of the parent fractal would soon become unrecognizable. Most of the effect in today's image was achieved by calculating it with the inside set to 'summ' and the bailout radius set to 16. Surprisingly, changing the bailout makes a big difference in the final result. The calculation time of 18 minutes is slower than ideal, but the calculation may be dispensed with by going directly to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the image there. Heavy clouds, occasional light rain, and a temperature of 57F 14C kept a damper on things here at Fractal Central on Friday. FOTD -- April 27, 2007 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's FOTD image we take a journey to the world created when 12 parts of Z^(-1.25) are subtracted from 2 parts of Z^(-6.5) and (1/C) is added. The parent fractal created by this formula is shaped like a diamond, with a prominent 'fan' filling the eastern part of the open area. A rather curious area of indescribable chaos lies at the northern vertex of the diamond, where a filament extends from a Mandeloid bud into an infinite spiral. Today's image is located rather deep in this filamen- tary spiral. To add a little extra interest to the image, I rendered it with the 'inside' set to 'fmod' and the 'proximity' set to 1. About one-half of the image consists on 'inside' stuff, so it works quite well. The 'outside' parts are rendered in the usual 'outside=iter' manner. After admiring the image for a minute or so, I decided it was worth a rating of a 7. It seems a bit too gaudy for perfection, and this prevented a higher rating. The name I gave it -- The High Lifetime" -- has nothing to do with drugs, or with the image either for that matter. It is simply a phrase that popped into my head while I studied the image. The calculation time of 8-1/3 minutes is a bit slow. But all is not lost, for the completely rendered image is available for easy viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> I got word today from my sister, who now lives at Old Fractal Central, that she will be away on a trip most of next week. This means that I will be spending most of next week back there with the old fractal cats, Thomas and Tippy, who are still quite well. Curiously, the old place still seems like the home base of the FOTD. I started the FOTD there, and posted it from there for the first nine years. If all goes well, the FOTD will be uninterrupted for the few days I will stay there, but the P133 computer I left there for such visits is near the end of its life. If it fails to start, I could miss a few FOTD's. No rain fell on Thursday here at Fractal Central, but the heavy clouds and temperature of only 52F 11C made things feel most un- spring like. The fractal cats must have agreed, for they showed no interest in the outdoors. My day was busier than average. The next FOTD will appear in a short 24 hours.
