Thus it is simpler: Buddhabrot_ { reset=2004 type=mandelcloud passes=1 center-mag=-0.300522/-4.44089e-016/0.8079007/1/-90/-1.23373533611470521e-014 params=751 float=y maxiter=751 fillcolor=0 inside=0 outside=summ sound=off } A BASIC script prints out the whole thing as a literal string, but the params and maxiter numbers are variables; a simple loop varies them from 2->751 and prints out all the PAR entries to one file, along with a BAT file which runs fractint and references the entries sequentially. XFRACTINT? I tried it a few years ago when I was investigating linux. It didn't seem to be as fast or as versatile as DOS fractint so I shelved it. I'm still waiting for 64 bit Fractint ... In the mean time, I've finally got ultrafractal to read some of my fractint pars, like for the universe sequences, but I have to hack them up a bit. Maybe I can re-render the U3 viddie in 32 bit color if I can get it right. But I don't know if current systems can be run 24/7/365; they are not as robust as older systems and tend to overheat. I can fix that, but the rendering time should be much quicker since a windows app can take advantage of the full proc capabilities and 32 bit memory addressing, but they actually render slower than fractint. FractInt for Windows (beta 4) -- open for testing

Welcome to the FractInt Makeover! For those of you on the fractint list that may not have heard, I've been overhauling the FractInt source base to move it out of the 16-bit DOS world. Things have been progressing nicely and I'm now at a point where I think widespread testing would be helpful. Download and install beta 4 of FractInt for Windows: <http://tinyurl.com/26dvd7> I've just resubscribed to the fractint list so you can send bug reports to me or to the list. If you have any doubt, just send any bugs to me. A memory dump file will be produced upon a crash, but that shouldn't be happening anymore :-). This is what I would call "Phase I" of the overhaul. It is a migration of the existing DOS source base to a 32-bit Windows application. The user interface looks and acts like DOS because it is just a port of the DOS ui. A minimal amount of "Windows-ification" has been done, but you'll notice a lack of normal Windows things like a menu bar, context menu, paying attention to the mouse, dialog boxes, etc. The next phase will be to backfill these changes into the X Window System version to make all these features available to xfractint. Once that is tested, the beta will be over and a new release made. Known Issues There is no sound output support. There is no mouse support. Panning and zooming is by keyboard only. Video modes with pixel dimensions other than 4/3 aspect ratio assume non-square pixels. The images all render fine, but they appear stretched or squashed. The choice of resolutions in fractint.cfg reflect this. With debugflag=10000, error messages are reported for disk video mode when: start fractint, pick any disk video mode (e.g. 320x200), let it render, wait for completion, then go to the <v> screen, change 320 to 32, submit it. Without the debugflag settings, FractInt for Windows will most likely crash. This problem is present in the DOS fractint and not a result of the port. There are a few gaps in functionality associated with fractal types that were computed via assembly language, but these were mostly integer versions of some of the more common fractal types. FOTD -- March 31, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: In today's fractal I mixed Z^2 and Z^(0.1). This combination creates a parent fractal that resembles a Mandelbrot set with its west, north and south sides torn apart. Today's image is located in what remains of the north bud of the M-set. Most of the effect of hazy lavender circles was achieved by calculating the image with the inside set to 'bof60', which colors the inside according to how close the points come to the origin. I did not name or rate the image, since it's more a show of Fractint's program features than a fractal that is worthwhile in its own right. The calculation time of 5-1/3 minutes is a bit slow. A faster way of viewing the image is to go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and see it there. I have seen comments on the list about the slow-down that happens when Fractint is run under the version of DOS in Windows XP-Pro. Once the slow-down kicks in, the only way I know to defeat it is to baby-sit the machine and strike a key every minute. But I think I have found a way around the problem, which totally avoids the slow-down and lets fractals calculate at top speed to completion without human intervention. I will do a few more tests to see if I am right, then post my findings in a day or two. The Friday weather turned out near perfect here at Fractal Central -- blue skies, light winds and a temperature of 64F 18C. The cats seemed not to notice the perfect weather. They were more concerned with finding trouble to get into. In my department, the big rush, which has been going on for over a month, is almost at its end. And it sure will be good to have things back to normal. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and a paradox arises when we try to squeeze into our limited concept of reality something that will not fit there. A typical example is the grandfather paradox. I.e. if the calculation for a fractal "escapes" (exceeds the bailout value) after N iterations, the pixel is colored as color number N. If N is greater than the number of colors available, it wraps around. So, if you are using a 16-color video mode, and you are using the default maximum iteration count of 150, your image will run through the 16-color palette 150/16 = 9.375 times. When you use Logarithmic palettes, the entire range of iteration values is compressed to map to one span of the color range. This results in spectacularly different images if you are using a high iteration limit and are zooming in on an area near a "lakelet". When using a compressed palette in a 256 color mode, we suggest changing your colors from the usual defaults. The last few colors in the default IBM VGA color map are black. This results in points nearest the "lake" smearing into a single dark band, with little contrast from the blue (by default) lake. Fractint has a number of types of compressed palette, selected by the "Log Palette" line on the <X> screen, or by the "logmap=" command line parameter: [logmap=0 is 'logmap off' - Hal Lane] logmap=1: for standard logarithmic palette. logmap=-1: "old" logarithmic palette. This variant was the only one used before Fractint 14.0. It differs from logmap=1 in that some colors are not used - logmap=1 "spreads" low color numbers which are unused by logmap=-1's pure logarithmic mapping so that all colors are assigned. logmap=N (>1): Same as logmap=1, but starting from iteration count N. Pixels with iteration counts less than N are mapped to color 1. This is useful when zooming in an area near the lake where no points in the image have low iteration counts - it makes use of the low colors which would otherwise be unused. logmap=-N (<-1): Similar to logmap=N, but uses a square root distribution of the colors instead of a logarithmic one. logmap=2 or -2: Auto calculates the logmap value for maximum effect. Another way to change the 1:1 mapping of iteration counts to colors is to use the "RANGES=" parameter. It has the format: RANGES=aa/bb/cc/dd/... Fractint Version 20.0 Page 85 Iteration counts up to and including the first value are mapped to color number 0, up to and including the second value to color number 1, and so on. I believe that when the Logmap value is set to greater than a value of two, that the mapping of: the 512 colors in the color map to: the final iteration values of pixels is non-linear (actually logarithmic.) This change in assignment of colors by the Logmap parameter can apparently make detail in an image 'disappear' just as using an inappropriate color map for an image can. (An extreme example of an inappropriate color map would be having 75% of the entries in a color map be black. This will almost always hide structure that exists in a fractal colored with this particular color map -- and could easily make the structure of an entire fractal become a black screen.) FOTD -- March 29, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The formula behind today's image combines 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.1) with 0.1 negative part of Z^(-11.1) and adds (1/C), resulting in an oversized parent fractal consisting of 4 large bays and a very prominent 'fan', the whole thing surrounded by cut-off rings of various shapes and sizes. Today's image lies in a field of debris just east of the 'fan'. I gave the image no name or rating. Due to the winding-down but still pressing rush, I gave the image too little time and effort to honor it with a name. I might have rated it at a 4 or 5, but decided to let it go un-rated. The calculation time of 3-1/2 minutes means that little time will have been wasted if the image disappoints. And almost no time will have been wasted if the image is viewed on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> In a few days I will discuss the use of the MandelbrotMix4 formula, paying special attention to the method I use to find good parameters to enter into it. But to begin the discussion right now, I might re-phrase the question into something like, "how do I recognize a good parent fractal when I see one?" A cooler but still mild day with a temperature of 59F 15C here at Fractal Central on Wednesday went un-appreciated by the fractal cats. They were more interested in watching the local squirrels make more squirrels. In my department the work is almost back to the normal amount. One or two more days should just about do it. FOTD -- March 30, 2007 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is based on a formula that plays a game with the golden ratio. I calculated the formula Z^(1.618)+C at a level 32 turns up the logarithmic ladder, and got a parent fractal that somewhat resembles a Mister Potato-Head. There's not much more to be said about the near-shapeless blob. But this blob has a good bit of debris scattered around its west side, and this debris holds midgets, one of which appears as the featured element in today's image. Once again, my limited time permitted only a short trip to Fractal Land, so I could not name or rate today's image. But I will say that it is a bit more interesting than the usual images found in the Mandeloids of an order between 1 and 2. The render time of a brief 2-2/3 minutes will try the patience of no one, and it makes the task of running the included parameter file almost a breeze. An even swifter way to see the image is to go to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view it there. A cloudless sky and a temperature of 55F 13C made conditions near perfect here at Fractal Central on Thursday.
