How I name Jim Muth's images on my computer.

This seems as good an opportunity as any to pass along how I name Jim Muth's images in my Fractint folder on my computer where they are currently mixed in with other .GIF fractal image files. When I calculate one of Jim Muth's Fractal of the Day images I name it: FYYMMDD[n].GIF The 'F' identifies it as a FotD image and groups all the FotD images together. The 'YYMMDD' automatically sorts the FotD images into correct ascending date order. And I can create 36 or so variations or zooms of Jim's image by optionally appending: '[n]' -- a single letter or number to identify a new image as my own -- but still show that the base source image was from a particular image of Jim's. The resulting file name is either seven or eight characters long, allowing Fractint to show the full name and not an eight character name created by Windows -- e.g. where: MyFractal.gif becomes: MYFRAC~1.GIF as displayed by DOS programs such as Fractint. A downside of this scheme is that it gives different 'date numbers' than Jim uses ( "FOTD 02-09-06" for Sept. 2nd, '06 ). Paul N. FOTD 04-09-06 (Seahorse Landscape [8])

FOTD -- September 04, 2006 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in Seahorse Valley. It has been in no way altered by stretching or skewing; the color bands were crea- ted with the traditional 'outside=iter' method. Yes, I realize that the scene has no resemblance to the Seahorse Valley we know so well, or to its Julia sets, but we must not forget that the valley is a four-dimensional thing with aspects that the limited human mind will never conceive. But could a mind greater than human conceive the fourth dimension? Perhaps. I named the picture "Seahorse Landscape". With a little stretch of the imagination it does somewhat resemble one of those fantas- tic landscapes created by surrealist artists and then filled with their dream objects. I gave myself a pat on the back when I rated the image at an 8. And why not? I spent nearly an hour smoothing and fine-tuning the colors. The render time of 9.5 minutes is good on my ancient U.S.Logic P200 computer, which has long since passed the expected time of its assignment to the trash heap. But as long as it keeps run- ning Fractint, it will be my fractal machine. Some over-educated S.O.T.A. machines may panic when they see a DOS program like Fractint. The weather here at New Fractal Central on Sunday was marginal as we dried out from the 4 inches (10CM) of rain that fell on Saturday, when over-hyped Ernesto blew through. The cloudy skies and temperature of 64F 18C were disappointing for those hoping for a last fling of outdoor summer recreation. The fractal cats were not bothered however. They spent the day alternating between sleeping and chasing each other up and down the long hallway. An evening treat of tuna for Cassie and sharp cheddar cheese for Nico kept them happy. And BTW, I have a good picture of the two new fractal cats. I'll send it to be posted on the FOTD web site in a day or so. My day was just busy enough to prevent boredom. In the after- noon I got word that another big job might be on the way for later this week. If it is as large as boasted, it might cause me to miss a few FOTD's, but right now that is pure speculation. The next fractal trip to Seahorse Valley will appear in 24 hours. Binary system

If anyone is interested check out the nuclear tri-gram designations in the I Ching. Some are also used on the S Korean flag. They are a base 2 system to 64 places...from 0 to 63. Zero being - - used as a placeholder and --- used to designate value. Count from the bottom up with the bottom place being 1, next 2, next 4, next 8, next 16, and top 32. These markings are ancient, but they could very well be used to program gates for a base 64 system since gates are either on or off, 0 or 1. Comments??? David M Fisher sunfish(a)intercom.net

FOTD -- September 03, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's colorful image is another unfamiliar view of Seahorse Valley, which appears as the straight-edged bluish horizontal band extending nearly the full width of the frame. If the Mandelbrot set were expanded to include the part of the Julibrot extending behind and in front of the screen along the real-Z axis, today's view would be looking down from above. (Yester- day's view was looking from the left.) Being a four-dimensional object, Seahorse Valley has more different views than can be imagined. And even when all the views have been studied, the viewer will have no better idea of the actual overall shape of the valley than he did at the start. Four-dimensional objects are not mere everyday three-dimensional objects with extra complex shapes. They are totally and absolutely different. The most basic feature of 4-D things is that their surfaces are three-dimensional, with 3-D volume. When looking at the surface of an opaque 4-D object, a 4-D man would see a 3-D volume projected onto his 3-D retinas. When observing a 4-D hypersphere, he would see what we would consider every point on the inside of a normal 3-D sphere. Rotation in four dimensions is about a plane as axis, and a 4-D object may be subject to two totally independent rotations simultaneously, with the gyroscopic effect of one rotation having no effect on the other rotation. All this is entirely unimaginable, but may easily be confirmed with mathematics. I named today's image "Seahorse Valley-02". I rated it at a 6. The render time of 1-1/2 minutes is brief enough to cause no one impatience. FOTD 02-09-06 (New View of Seahorse Valley [6])

FOTD -- September 02, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today we come face to face with the monster that has been lurking in the background of nearly every fractal image I have posted -- the abstract but strangely real four-dimensional fractal object known as the Julibrot. The Julibrot must be four-dimensional. It is created by reiterating two complex numbers, and complex numbers have two parts. 2+2=4. But what is the fourth dimension? In the theory of relativity, time is the fourth dimension, but in the Julibrot a fourth spatial dimension exists, meaning that for the Julibrot, time is the fifth dimension. So what is the fourth spatial dimension? In sci-fi stories we sometimes hear of creatures visiting earth from the fourth or fifth or whatever dimension. These fantasy higher dimensions are not true higher dimensions. They are merely alternate parallel universes of three dimensions, like our own universe. The true fourth spatial dimension is a line simultaneously perpendicular to every line we could draw in our 3-space. Such a direction is absolutely unimaginable, almost like there were some kind of impenetrable mental wall blocking our visualizing ability. Yet we can explore 4-space with mathematics as easily as we explore the familiar three-dimensional space of everyday experience. I will have much to say in the next month about the wonders and seemingly impossible features of 4-D objects and 4-D space. But for now it's time to get to today's image. Today's image is an Oblate view of that warhorse of all fractal objects -- Seahorse Valley of the Mandelbrot set. Yes, I realize that the image has no resemblance to Seahorse Valley or its Julia sets, but the thing in the image, which somewhat resembles a party mask, truly is Seahorse Valley, and a lot more of it than we normally see, at that. I will show another totally new view of Seahorse Valley in tomorrow's FOTD, and explain how the images were produced. I rated today's image at a 6, which is slightly above average. The scene has appeared before, but the coloring of today's version is about as good as I have ever seen, justifying the rating. The image renders in 14 seconds, one of the all-time fastest, and fast enough for the most impatient. My day was average, whatever that means. I expect tomorrow to be another average day. Hopefully, the FOTD, which will appear in 24 hours, will be above average. I believe that we have a number of 'active' members and quite a few 'lurkers'. The program Fractint is a DOS program and is still under development. The Windows version of Fractint is farther behind in capability. FOTD 01-09-06 (The very last Midget [No Rating])

FOTD -- September 01, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "The Very Last Midget". No, it is not the last midget I will ever find, but it is the last midget that will appear in a FOTD for the rest of September. In fact, today's image with its midget was originally scheduled to be posted on August 31, but a heavy load of work prevented me from posting it on schedule. Tomorrow's FOTD, and those for the rest of the month, will hold no midget. Today's scene is located in the oversized fractal that results when Z^(1.7) is subtracted from 1/10 part of Z^(-1.7) and (1/C) is added. Since I do not think too much of the image, I did not bother giving it a rating. But it is still worth a quick look, especially if that look is on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> where the image can be found, ready for easy download. Crop circles and fractals -- an interesting combination. My opinion is that most crop circles are created by clever human pranksters, but like with UFO's there is a small but puzzling residue of unexplained circles. Are the unexplained circles caused by visitors from space? Most likely not. Are they caused by supernatural forces? Probably not. Are they caused by as yet undiscovered natural forces of earth? Probably so. But whether crop circles are real or fake, in my opinion, there are far more interesting and mysterious things that exist in the ultra-large realms of the cosmos and the ultra-small world of the atoms. A cloudy somewhat chilly day here at New Fractal Central on Thursday went un-noticed by the new fractal cats, who spent the day looking for and finding trouble. Nico somehow got himself shut up in the coat closet this evening, where he spent about two hours. When we noticed him missing and checked the closet, he strolled out, looking at us as if to ask, "what took you so long?" Cassie watched with interest, wondering what all the excitement was about. My day was quite busy, but the work is nearly caught up, which means the next FOTD should appear on schedule in 24 hours.
