Cats and fractals

I am currently back at Old Fractal Central, wrapping things up here. I am writing on an unfamiliar computer with unfamiliar programs, so I hope everything works right and I remember the correct addresses. The new fractal cats have chosen their names. The little gray lady chose the name Cassie, and the big black boy chose to be named Nicholas, We call him Nico for short. Both guys are happily settled in their new home at New Fractal Central. Meanwhile, the FOTD will not appear for a few more days. There is simply too much other stuff to be done. The next FOTD will appear as soon as I find the time to scare up a worthwhile fractal image and write an informative discussion. Most likely, things will be up and running by the end of the month. FOTD -- June 12, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's quickie fractal will hopefully be one of the last boring quickies. Things really are getting back to normal here at New Fractal Central, though slowly, and every day brings us closer to the time when the FOTD returns to its former daily schedule, with classy names and value ratings for every fractal image. Today's image is a scene in the fractal that results when Z^(-1.1) is subtracted from Z^(-2.2) and (1/C) is added. Most of the image consists of inside stuff made visible by the 'bof60' inside fill. As has been the case for a frustratingly long time, I gave the image no name or rating. It seems unfair to rate a fractal that took a mere 5 minutes to find, and a brief 19 minutes to render. It also seems unfair to expect fractalists who enjoy cutting edge images to spend 19 minutes calculating a fractal that might have been produced by a raw fractal newbie. Running Legacy Apps In Windows

With regard to the article in PC magazine, I don't see them listed, but here are a couple of programs which are recommended for running legacy games in WinXP and 2000Pro. I don't know if Fractint will work with them, I haven't had a chance to try it, but they do allow you to run games which require DOS. Dosbox version 0.65 Dosshell Mike Hughes

Bad and Good Fractal News plus XP compatibility

The bad fractal news is that, due to a cat search, there is no FOTD for June 10 and will be none until June 12. The good fractal news is that the cat search was successful. We found two new fractal cats at the animal shelter, a three-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl. The new dynamic duo had been owned by a woman who recently died, so though one cat is a large black male and the other a small gray female, they have lived together all their lives and get along fine together. Apparently, the lady cat can take care of herself if big boy gets rowdy. We have not yet named them, since they are still familiarizing themselves with their new home. In a few days, when they feel at home, their personalities will become more apparent, and they will in effect name themselves. As a side note, I am curious as to the difficulty people are having running Fractint under XP. Maybe the incompatibil- ity exists only with the home version of XP. I use the professional version of XP, and Fractint runs under it at lightning speed, with no clumsy DOS-emulator programs that slow things down and all program features and video resolutions fully functional. I have dosbox running on my laptop under xp (in D-Fend). Everything I use works perfectly, including colour cycling + colour map editing up to 1024x768. I'm don't know how to get 1600 x 1200 on the screen so if you could explain, I'll happily try it out for you (as I want to be able to do it anyway). Cheers. FOTD -- June 09, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Re-organization has been going better than anticipated here at New Fractal Central. As a result, we are close to the point where the FOTD can resume its daily schedule, with new and even greater fractal scenes to come. But we are not quite yet at that point, so there could easily be occasional missing FOTD's over the next few weeks. Today's image shows what the Fractint biomorph option can do. I applied to a midget deep in the fractal that results when Z^(-2.8) is subtracted from Z^(-1.1) and (1/C) is added. The image resembles nothing so much as a fancy floral arrangement. Since I put very little effort into the image, I have given it no name or rating, but it really is worth a quick look. The render time of under 5 minutes is brief enough to make running the included parameter file almost enjoyable. Clouds, cool temperatures and occasional showers continued here at New Fractal Central on Thursday. At the present time we are not even fully settled, much less feeling like we are in a familiar and comfort- able home. It looks like it will be longer than expected before things are totally back to a new kind of normal here at New Fractal Central. Today's quickie is posted a day late. I posted it just to let the world know I am still alive and fractally active. The image is a scene in the fractal that results when Z^(-4.8) is subtrac- ted from Z^(-1.7) and (1/Z) is added. I used the passes=b for maximum speed. Luckily, this option works accurately with this image. As has been the case for several months, I gave the image neither name nor rating. The weather today at New Fractal Central was cloudy and cool for the season, with occasional light showers. Since I put almost no effort into the image, I have neither named nor rated it.
