FOTD -- October 30, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to the fractal that results when Z^(-6.67) is subtracted from Z^(-1.667) and (1/C) is added. To add to the interest I reduced the escape radius to 44, which makes the outside parts solid, and rendered the scene with the outside set to 'tdis'. The resulting image falls short of FOTD standards, so I gave it no rating. The name "FOTDette for Today" needs no explanation. The 5-minute render time will try the patience of very few. The completed image is posted for easy viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The cloudy, blustery and chilly weather continued here at Fractal Central on Sunday, with a high temperature of only 46F 8C. The fractal cats spent the day surprisingly peacefully. Maybe they feel guilt about my bum ankle. With me, it's still the bunny-hop, with the addition of a few upper-body sore muscles due to the unusual exertion of supporting my weight with my arms and hands, on the walker. Sorry to hear about your ankle, Jim. Please take care of it. I hope it gets better soon. Does your doctor recommend putting intermittent heat on your ankle to increase the blood flow to promote quicker healing? This can be done starting 48 hours after the injury. If you check the internet you can see how to do and the benefits of this. FOTD -- October 29, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to the tip of the filament at the northern extremity of the Mandelbrot set, where we examine a midget on a side-filament radiating from a larger filament. The normally humdrum image reached FOTD status when the unusually attractive color palette rotated into view. The image looks best when the screen brightness is turned down. I named the image "Deep in the North" because it lies near the northern extremity of the M-set. I gave it no rating. The render time of 15-1/2 minutes is quite reasonable for an image with a magnitude of 10^24. And the image may also be seen on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The weather has been pretty much cloudy and chilly here at New Fractal Central for the past few days. But the cats didn't seem to care. I asked both of them who left the toy where I would land on it and turn my ankle, but both claimed innocence. No problem. I have already forgiven whoever did it. It was really my fault. I should have looked before I leaped. Being laid up, hopping like a bunny, isn't much fun, but every now and then my mood cheers up enough for me to do an FOTD. Problems at Fractal Central

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things go from bad to worse here at N.F.C. Not only is the rush still on, but I am sporting a badly sprained ankle, which will have me hopping around with a walker for the indefinite future. I sprained the ankle by leaping off a chair without looking and landing on a toy one of the fractal cats had left there. The doctor says it is a bad sprain but will heal in time. But I wonder how much time. Trying to navigate with a walker and painful ankle isn't much fun. Meanwhile, not being able to do much else, I'll have plenty of time for fractals, but my mood will not be very cheerful for a while, so I may not write much in the way of discussions. Jim M.

One of my fractal goals over the past several months has been to find a midget in a Mandeloid of an order less than 1.1. On Tuesday I finally found one -- for all it is worth. It popped up by accident, almost without a search. My great? discovery appears as the FOTD image for today. I found the midget 800 levels up the logarithmic ladder of the Z^(1.09)+C Mandeloid. Not surprisingly, the midget is shaped pretty much the same as its parent. I named the image "FOTD-ette Number-3" but gave it no rating. How could I rate something as insignificant as an oval-shaped midget surrounded by a cloud of meaningless chaos? The image calculates in 4-1/2 minutes on my 10-year-old machine. FOTD -- October 24, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's quickie FOTD-ette takes us extremely deep into the negative X-axis of the Mandelbrot set, where we find -- what else but a midget. This area is the first part of the M-set explored by almost every newbie, so I could not give the image a rating. I named it simply "FOTD-ette Number-2". The unusual vividness of the colors is perhaps the only saving feature of the image. Though the magnitude of the image is well within the range of arbitrary precision math, the area is a very fast one, resulting in a parameter file that will finish in one minute or less on the SOTA units that do not panic when a DOS program is booted. Those with such panic-stricken machines may view the completed image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Cloudy and blustery weather, with a high temperature of only 46F 8C, kept the fractal cats confined to the indoors here at Fractal Central on Monday. In my opinion, it is not a great fractal, but since greatness is in the mind of the beholder, it might be great in some alien mind.
