FOTD -- July 07, 2005 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: For some strange reason I saw an airplane (aeroplane) propeller in today's image, and immediately named it "Propeller". Yes, I know that the prop would never work. With its caterpillar-like decorations and different-sized blades, it is so unbalanced that it would quickly shake the plane apart. But I think that this is the first time I have had a propeller come to mind while meditating on a fractal. And not a bad fractal propeller it is. By itself, the fractal image rates a 6, but I have given it a bit more coloring effort than usual, which raises the rating to a notably above-average rating of a 7. Much of the image's effect is a result of rendering the scene with the outside set to 'real'. (The normal 'iter' setting produces a far less interesting image.) Other than having the outside set to 'real', and putting a bit of extra effort into the coloring, nothing out of the ordinary was done with the image. It is obvious that the parameters of the parent fractal are a play on the square root of 2. The parent fractal itself is a mis-proportioned Mandeloid with a field of disconnected chaotic material scattered to its southwest. Today's scene is located in a tiny bit of cast-off debris lying deep in the East Valley of the main Mandeloid. The image renders in 5 minutes on my 10-year-old machine. This render time will be closer to 2 minutes on the more modern units, at least on those that are capable of rendering Fractint parameter files. Those with Fractint-challenged computers can still see the image by downloading it from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Sun and clouds, lower humidity, and a temperature of 86F 30C were just what the fractal cats needed to keep them happy on Wednesday. (Fractal cats demand happiness.) As a result, they spent over 6 hours enjoying hiding in the brush. They came inside without complaint as dusk fell, to enjoy their treat of tuna. Today is starting cloudy and much more humid. Flood warnings are in the forecast. I'm glad the repairs to the fractal basement drain have worked, and the basement no longer fills with backed-up water in heavy rain. But the cats had best do their Thursday exploring before the rain sets in. For me, it's the usual work-first-fractals-second kind of day coming up. The next FOTD will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and if the earth was seeded with life from space around 3,800,000,000 years ago, how did the aliens who seeded the earth with life come into being in less time than the 10,000,000,000 years or so the universe had been in existence at the time of the seeding? Old favourite .maps

Hi - Years ago, I lost all my Fractint .maps in a computer crash. I now have about 2,000 (backed up) but could not find some old favourites in any collection. I reconstructed two .map files from old images -"german.map" and "avia.map.". Two others I remember but could not reconstruct (no examples)are "f'egatre.map" and "f'egatwo.map." FOTD -- July 06, 2005 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Fake True-Color". I gave it this name because the elements are so finely divided and so random that the effect almost mimics a true-color image with its millions of colors. The rating of a 6 is once again a bit less than what I hoped to achieve. But fractals are like that. A fractalist cannot always be sure of what will lie at the end of the day's search. The parent fractal of today's image is surprisingly simple -- a flat green disk with a spot of chaotic debris off to the east. The image is located where least expected -- in this spot of debris, on a poorly marked filament leading to a Mandelbrot bud. With a running time of 1-1/4 hours on my fractal machine, the parameter file is annoyingly slow. But I have sent the completed image on ahead to Paul, who will post it on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> from where it may be quickly and conveniently downloaded. Very warm and humid weather on Tuesday kept the dynamic duo lazy. Their greatest activity came at 11pm, when a thunder- shower came up and sent them scurrying into the large closet for safety. Today is starting a bit less humid but still warm. If it doesn't thunder, the duo will have a good day. For me it will be work and fractals, but what the heck, it's a life. FOTD -- July 05, 2005 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Let the banners wave and the trumpets blare! I'm back! Only my deep humility prevents me from spreading the great news to the entire world. After nearly a week of FOTD deprivation, we once again have a FOTD. Today's image has an ominous feeling. With all its sharp edges and dagger-like points, it would not look out of place on the cover of a paperback horror novel. Actually, it's a harmless fractal, and the ominous appearance is entirely of my own creation, a result of setting the first 6 color registers to total black. To change the image into a non-threatening one, simply rotate the color palette. I named the image "Barbed Wire Fence". It does have a kind of fence-like appearance, but actually, the image is the result of subtracting 1.02 parts of Z^(-3) from Z^(-2) before adding (1/C). The rating of a barely adequate 6 might indicate that the week with no fractals has left me a bit rusty. No problem. I will be back at full speed within a day. Although the Fractint program has a couple dozen functions that might be applied to C, I use only the 'ident' and 'recip' functions when I work with the MandelbrotMix4 formula. The other functions do create some curiously shaped parent fractals, which are often periodic, but down deep, where I find most of my images, the elements of these fractals are the same as those in the fractals created with the 'ident' and 'recip' functions. The render time of 2 minutes is brief enough to make rendering today's image from the included parameter file a pleasure. Well, almost a pleasure. And it is also a pleasure to visit the long-maintained FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and download the completed GIF image from there. The fractal weather was uneventful over the long holiday. The fractal cats enjoyed the normal conditions to the utmost of their ability, which does not require much effort from cats who are 15 years old. As for me, I finished the work, took it easy and even managed to see a fireworks display, which I undoubtedly would have enjoyed more if I had been 40 years younger. Today is again starting uneventfully. The work is minimal; hopefully I can get the fractals maximal. The next glorious fractal will appear in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and when I last checked, Earth was the only planet in the universe known to harbor Earth-style life. (The real question is how much other- style life is out there.) Deep Sea Scallop

One thing I have noticed when Jim uses his popular MandelbrotMix4a formula is his use of almost exclusively C or 1/C as the constant. Some time ago I was experimenting with that formula using other functions of C for the constant. Using tan(C), I stumbled onto this fractal which gave me the impression of looking through a rusty port hole of a sunken ship at some scallops in clear blue water. I'm sure Jim would certainly have found a better color palette to improve its rating but I like it as is. I wish Jim a nice vacation. Owing to the [tiny] possibility that somebody here might remember me / care about this anouncement... a have a gallery on Zazzle: http://tinyurl.com/cvewr For those who don't know about Zazzle... basically you can pay them to print electronic images on paper. But you can also have them put your images on their website, where anybody who happens to browse past can order a paper print - in which case, Zazzle gives you 10% of the purchase price! :-D Theoretically, a nice way to create income. Reality check: uh... there are *trillions* of galleries up there, with more being added by the second. So yours had *better* stand out if you realistically expect to make a single sale... Anyway, I'm not expecting anybody to *buy* any of my images... but I thought you might enjoy looking at them :-) They're on Zazzle because it doesn't cost me money to put them there, and there is a theoretical possibility that some day somebody _might_ buy one or two. (And, frankly, *I* might order some T-shirts from them too. Heh!) Anyway, Zazzle deliberately shows visitors reduced-quality JPEG images (so people don't "steal" them), but even so, hopefully you'll enjoy the show. (I'm especially proud of the two "tatto" images, the glorious "rainbow spiral" ones, and the various "jellyfish" images.) All the fractal images were generated with FractInt. (running under Windows XP - without the slightest problems of any kind; I have *never* had trouble running FractInt on any machine, ever, regardless of OS - and I'm frankly puzzled by all the people who have...) The idea is simple; it seems that I can do disk video at 2048 x ???? and still use passes=g. (Any higher and it resets to passes=1, which is too slow.) So I have FractInt make an 8x8 MIG, and then convert to simple GIF. I then shrink the image to half that resolution using a Lancoz resample filter - and presto, 8192x6144 pixels with 2x2 oversampling antialias. 8-) Takes *forever* to upload tho... And, in fact, it takes nearly as long to convert the MIG to a plain GIF as it does to render the thing in the first place! :-S Does the converter program not use all available RAM? Anyone know of a tool that does? Unfortunately, the program I use to do the resize/resample gets rather confused by a MIG file... :-( Most of the images are just straight Mandelbrot zooms - mostly using colour maps other people have created. A few of the images use my various cubic Mandelbrot formula. (The "shadow" images in particular.) That's not just z^3 + c, but z^3 - 3a^2z + b, resulting in a 4D Mandelbrot generated from 2 seperate critical points. Currently, I have to turn off periodicy checking for those to work - can you spell SLOW? Anyway, I have loads more images to put up - once my computers finish chugging through all the lengthy computations to redraw them at an appropriate size. I also *know* I have a CD _somewhere_ with a whole chunk more stuff... but can I find it now? The 3D stuff is done with POV-Ray. (Not that there is much of it!) I'm also planning to add some "flame" images. (Flame = a particular non-linear IFS that some guy invented.) Those are created using a program called Apophysis. (Great images, but... rather buggy. And the "estimated time" is hopeless!) Sadly, even my shiny new AMD Athlon64 3500+ is struggling to render flame images at a high enough resolution. :-( It just takes *a lot* of CPU power to compute that many trillion iterations...
