FOTD -- April 05, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It has been a most busy week here at Fractal Central, but between the periods of rush I somehow managed to produce a fractal. Today's 'evaporated' image was created by combining 1 negative part of (1/Z) with 0.1 negative part of Z^(-10), then adding (1/C). The 'unevaporated' parent fractal consists of a rather tubby Mandeloid with its main stem pointed ENE, with much chaotic material lying farther to the east. Today's scene is located in the East Valley area of this Mandeloid, which in this case is on the WSW side of the main bay. When I say that today's image is evaporated, I do not mean it is all dried up. I mean that the original fractal has been obliterated by raising the escape radius to 10^100 and the blank inside that resulted has been brought to life by rendering it with the bof61 inside option. I named the image "A Delicate Vision". With its fern-like arms and tendrils, the picture does have a rather delicate feeling to it. I rated the image at a 6, which is just slightly above average. The 1/4-hour render time of the parameter file on my tired old P200 unit is a bit much for such an average image. Warm sunny weather during the middle of the week made them happy, but the chilly, wet spell that ended the week turned their moods sullen. Today, they are making the most of the clouds and chill by observing the world from their shelf by the window. In a couple hours when they get their tuna, I expect their moods to lighten considerably. For me, it's a weekend, but there's still quite a bit of work to get done. And that FOTD CD is still waiting in the wings to be wrapped up. If I don't have it finished to my satisfaction by the end of this month, I'll distribute it as it is. Fractint version 20.2 patch 5 diff and executables are now available on the developer's ftp site: www.fractint.org From the Whats new file ***** Patch 5 Made changes to allow Xfractint to find files that use upper case letters. Fixed a problem with the Cellular type that prevented entering an initial row of greater than 32767 from working. Added a message about not being able to resume after interrupting prior to rows being displayed on screen. Fixed an evolver bug which caused setting evolver parameters to turn evolving on, even though evolving was actually turned off. Added Charlie Chernohorsky's truecolor speed up and his implementation of virtual screen sizes for the VESA modes (dotmode=28). This feature does not work consistently between different video cards, so it may be turned off by using the startup command "virtual=n". Use the <V> screen to set the desired virtual screen size. See {View Window}. Please remember that if either X or Y is greater than 2048, solid guessing is turned off. This is for multiple reasons, so it is likely it will NOT get fixed soon. There is also a problem with the colorbars that appear when saving an image leaving bits of corruption on the screen. This occurs in all the VESA truecolor modes. Added Charlie to the scrolling list of contributors. Added Charlie's fix for the l-system type which occurred when a push-pop combination was on two different lines. Fixed the PAGE-UP/PAGE-DN zoombox in Xfractint so that it now appears on the screen. Fixed ranges= in Xfractint so GIFs save correctly and program doesn't end abruptly. ***** What is not mentioned are changes to the Xfractint X11 interface to improve reliability (I hope), man page update, and the Xfractint source now comes as a tar.gz file. All four sources have their own diff in the 2002p05.zip file. You will need to apply only one of them. See the readme.1st file in 2002p05.zip. Hello, Hi, Downloaded the tar.gz, compiled xfractint without any problems. The zoombox works perfectly ok now. The stereogram function works better than in the previous patch. Thank you, programmers!
