Hi: Please forgive me if I have not been paying proper attention but, is there any problem running Fractint under Windows XP? I just bought a new computer (Dell) with XP and I was wondering if I am going to encounter any problems with Fractint. Thanks George Priest

FOTD -- February 07, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I notice a letter on the Fractint list requesting the method of running the parameter files that I attach to the FOTD discussions. The process is simple. First, save the entire FOTD message in the Fractint directory as a pure text file with a .par extension. Be sure no lines wrap around and no extra characters (such as =3d) are inserted into the text by your e-mail reader. Then load Fractint and run the saved parameter file as you would any other parameter file. If all goes well, and it usually but not always does, the image will begin rendering, and when it is finished, can be explored like any other fractal. Today's image runs from the attached parameter file in 17 minutes on my machine at a resolution of 640x480x256. It is another of my evaporated images, and a very good one at that. The formula that created the image combines 12 negative parts of Z^(-1.6) with 9 negative parts of Z^(-10), then adds 1/C instead of C. The 1/C turns the normally inside-out parent fractal inside-out again, which results in a rightside-out fractal. In its un-evaporated form, this parent is a large, indescribable main open area, with many bays and estuaries, and a smaller, cut-off, more-Mandel-shaped figure to the east. The main bud of this cut-off feature is split down the middle by a spurious valley. Today's scene is located near the end of a filament extending from a bud on the shoreline of this valley, very near the point where the filament terminates in a large, oval open area. For this particular image, I used the MandelbrotMix2 formula rather than the MandelbrotMix4. Finding the name for today's image was easy. The detail in the converging arms so closely resembles the tendrils of a vine that the name "Fractal Tendrils" came almost automatically. Considering the unusually close resemblance of the fractal image to an actual physical object, the rating of a 7 is well justified. I have long considered the names I give to my fractal images. Fractals are abstract things, so should they be given the names of the physical things which, in my opinion, they resemble? Perhaps I should invent clever sounding nonsense words and phrases to serve as names for my images. I briefly considered a name such as "Vineroptera" for today's image. A whole new situation arises with languages other than English. For example, the Julibrot, which I explore so often, when translated into German, means something like "Bread of July" -- an interesting title, but one with little to do with the four- dimensional object in question. As I mentioned earlier, the parameter file of today's image renders in 17 minutes. The clouds increased all day Thursday here at Fractal Central, but the snow held off until after dark. The high temperature of 34F 1C was quite chilly for the sensitive whiskers of the dynamic duo. The extra outing I gave them right before sunset will have to hold them for a few days, for the snow is still falling lightly this morning, with 7in 18cm on the ground. Luckily for me, the work is not piling up as fast as the snow. In fact, I should have most of it behind me by lunch time. FOTD -- February 06, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Somewhere in the world, today is Waitangi day. I have no idea where it is celebrated or what a waitangi is. I assume that by mentioning a waitangi, I am not offending any ethnic group and thereby violating the rules of political correctness. So to all for whom it has significance, Happy Waitangi Day, or if the day is celebrated in the far east where the date has already passed, Happy Belated Waitangi Day. Today's fractal is named "Hairybrot". I gave it this name when, after studying the image for several minutes, half closing my eyes and all that kind of stuff, I could see nothing but a fractal pattern with porcupine-like hairs sticking out of it. The parent fractal is the same as yesterday's, with the slight exception that I changed the portion of Z^3.5 from 3.67 to 3.7. Today's scene lies in the suburbs of a larger midget in the East Valley area of a small Mandelbrot set that lies just beyond the southern point of the shapeless main bay of the parent. Like yesterday's image, today's image features disconnected elements, which normally indicate a non-critical area. But fractals don't seem to care about what is normal, and despite the surface appearance, the tiny midget is there at the center in all its unseen glory. I included the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file because the magnitude of the image is so great that it might otherwise render incorrectly. The rating of an average 5 reflects my current feelings about the image. Others may consider the image worth a higher or lower rating. At the end of the day I rewarded them for their patience with a treat of tuna. Today is starting just as cold, with clouds moving in and a threat of snow. If the duo have any plans at all of going outside, they had best do it early. My immediate plans involve finishing the work and finding a fractal for tomorrow's FOTD that would be above average. And this isn't Lake Wobegon, where every child is above average. This is the 'real' world, where only half of any distribution can be above average (more correctly, above the median). Fractint usually doesnt run properly on WinXP? Dang, I didnt know that Ive been running it on XP Pro from the git-go. Maybe that accounts for certain anomalies that I often encounter. E.g., if I use anything other than z for the bailout comparison, the image usually appears as if the iteration count was set to around 35 or so The program seems to be performing otherwise very well, but I guess I should someday vet a bunch of formulas in both 98 and XP to see what discrepancies are there to discover >From: "Paul N. Osher, Your posted reference to J. C, Sprotts work (Mandelbrot and Julia Sets Explored by Rare Event Theory, 29 Jan 2003) came along just as I was finding my way into related outcomes based on groups. The approach of using the order 4 cyclic group (C4) to generate the Mset in Fractint leads to a (WinXP friendly) formula such as Mset { x=real(pixel), y=imag(pixel), x1=y1=0: a=x1^2-y1^2+x b=2*x1*y1+y x1=a, y1=b z=sqrt(a^2+b^2) z < 10000 } I subsequently found a generalized formula that apparently works for groups of any order. In it, the Mset looks like this: C4e { x=real(pixel), y=imag(pixel), x1=x2=y1=y2=0: a1=x1^2+x2^2+2*y1*y2+x a2=2*x1*x2+y1^2+y2^2-x b1=2*x1*y1+2*x2*y2+y b2=2*x1*y2+2*x2*y1-y x1=a1, x2=a2, y1=b1, y2=b2 z=sqrt((a1-a2)^2+(b1-b2)^2) z < 10000 } But looking back at the first Mset formula, I saw it as a configuration of the pieces of the expansion of (a+b)^2. What would other arrangements lead to? I discovered that I could mix these up in about any arbitrary fashion and get a fractal object, and the more symmetry in the formula statements, the more to be found in the fractal itself. In the following example, p2 is meant to toggle between 1 and (0,1). Something I find interesting about Ptest is p1s effect on M. Plus/minus real p1 shift M left or right, imaginary p1 shift it up or down, and complex p1 at a corresponding angle. There seems to be zero distortion, as long as p1 isnt too close to the bailout value. Ptest3 has an OK fractal in p2=i but nothing too exciting elsewhere that I discerned. FOTD 05-02-03 (Classical Minibrot [5])

FOTD -- February 05, 2003 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: It's a bit hard to find an outstanding characteristic in today's FOTD image that might serve as the basis for a name. It's a simple scene of a classic quadratic midget located in a very un-classic fractal. When nothing better came to mind, I named the image "Classical Minibrot". The parent fractal, which was created by combining portions of Z^3.5 and Z^5.5, is anything but classic however. It consists of a long, narrow, large but shapeless body of open 'water' with a well-defined but rather distorted M-set lying some distance to the south. At first glance, the shapeless body appears totally non- critical, and therefore would not be expected to hold intact midgets. But in the world of fractals, things are not always as they seem. At least two rudimentary valleys appear on the western shore of the shapeless body. At first glance, these valleys also appear as though they would hold no midgets. The appearance is deceiving. Curious as to what other than midgets might lie in these valleys, I zoomed into the southern one and focused on an interesting feature. In this feature I noticed a pair of seahorse-like spirals with the symmetry that usually indicates the presence of a midget. I zoomed into the center of symmetry and found today's image. It's not a great fractal, in fact it's merely average, but it is still a significant improvement over yesterday's abysmal image, and if the present trend continues, we'll be back in positive territory within a day. One way to see the classical midget is to run the parameter file and wait 6 minutes or so. A faster way is to let Paul and Scott render the image and download it from one of their FOTD web sites at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> Tuesday morning at Fractal Central began rainy. It cleared shortly after noon, and the temperature reached a relatively mild 50F 10C, but high winds kept the fractal cats skittish, and they came inside after only a few minutes in the yard. They slept by the heat for the rest of the day. This morning is starting notably colder, though the high winds have died down. It's too early to say what the dynamic duo will do. What I'm going to do is first finish a bit of work and then try to find a better fractal. I've got a few ideas of where to look, but no success is guaranteed. Whatever I find will be tomorrow's FOTD. Until then, take care, and the quest for the perfect fractal might never end. Strangely enough my work machine (P4 1.6/TNT2/XP pro) will run fractint. I can get 1280 * 1024 * 256c, so I don't think it's XP at fault. FOTD -- February 04, 2003 (Rating 3) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There's nothing like a comical junk e-mail to take some of the depression out of an otherwise bad day. Things were already going bad enough, then the fractal for the day turned out to be a loser that I could rate no better than a 3. And then, to make things even worse, I checked my e-mail box and found the usual jumble of junk. I deleted the junk at once without downloading it, all but one letter that is. That letter had a subject line telling me that I am something special. OK, I told myself, I'll take a quick look at this one. As expected, the letter was a typical piece of junk directing me to an x-rated web site. The text began by telling me that the sender had seen my profile and that I was exactly the type of person she had been searching for all her life. The sender then described a gorgeous young woman eager to meet me. The letter might have been effective had it not been for the long list of carbon-copy addresses to which the same letter had also been sent, which somehow had inadvertently been included at the start of the text. Disappointed, I deleted the final piece of junk. This comical disappointment eased my disappointment over finding nothing better that a miserable 3-rated image for today's FOTD. I did all the right things, but it seemed as though fate itself was working against me. Regardless of what I tried, the images were as junky as an unwanted e-mail. I finally settled on an evaporated scene in the fractal that results when three parts of Z^(-14.56) are subtracted from 7 negative parts of Z^(-1.456) and 1/C is added instead of plain C. I named the image "Quagmire", mostly because that's how I felt. I rated it at a lowly 3 because that's all it is worth. A render time of 1 minute would be too much to ask for today's image. The actual 12-minute render time is verging on the ridiculous. Taking advantage of the blandness, the dynamic cats were as lively as they have been in some time as they romped in the yard for several hours. Of course, at their age of 12 years, their romping is not what it used to be, but Tippy the tabby still managed to climb two meters up a holly tree. Today is starting rainy. It remains to be seen how the dynamic ones will cope with the latest inconvenience. Being well in excess of 12 years, my tree-climbing days ended long ago. My romping is also suffering. Running Fractint on a Parhelia

As the title says, I have been trying to run Fractint on a matrox parhelia. The best res I can get seems to be about 300 * 400 * 256 colours. I am not expecting to be able to use all three monitors (one would do). Does anyone have any ideas how I can coax better res out of fractint. System is Athlon 1.4 / 512m with XP pro (if that's relevant). regards David
