FOTD -- November 25, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Had I not named today's image "Mandelbrot-13", I might have named it something like "Galaxia". It resembles nothing as much as a midget Mandelbrot set acting as though it were a black hole at the center of a giant galaxy. The giant galaxy is surrounded by four satellite spiral galaxies, which appear at first glance to be disconnected, but actually are connected to the main body of the M-set by infinitesimally thin filaments that do not show up in the image. The whole area is filled with smaller irregu- lar galaxies and scattered individual stars. Instead of going straight out the center line of a chain of buds, as we have done in the recent FOTD images, we entered the north bud and kept turning into smaller buds on the right to find the valley that holds today's scene. In fact, the valley that holds today's scene is of the sixth order. (It's the valley enclosing a bud on the side of a bud on the side of a bud etc. . . .) Areas such as this consist of almost total chaos, and a broad color palette must be used to reveal the subtle hidden order. Yes, there can be order in chaos, but who knows what it means. The parameter file runs in a moderately slow 12 minutes on my machine, which, considering the high iteration count of the elements, is not too bad. The clouds cleared away by noon, the temperature reached 68F 20C, and the fractal cats were happy all afternoon. When evening arrived, they came indoors without coaxing, and settled for the night without tuna. But such good things cannot continue. A cold front that arrived overnight has dropped the temperature to near freezing this morning. It remains to be seen how the cat duo will adjust to the chill. My task is to finish the modicum of work waiting to be done. When it is finished, I'll see what I can dredge up from the depths of the Mandelbrot set. FOTD -- November 24, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The discussion will be short because of an unexpected job that came in about an hour ago. It's not a large job, but if I let it sit on the shelf, we could be getting ourselves into another backlog. Today's image from the Mandelbrot set is a study in finding order in chaos. The scene is located on the north shoreline of the first bud beyond the large bud at -1 on the X-axis, in the fifth valley of the valley series of a sub-bud. Almost total chaos prevails in this area, with only a few remnants of anything resembling order. The midget in today's image is surrounded by one of these quasi-orderly areas. The rating of a 7 might be a bit liberal, but I kind of like the image, and this is almost certainly the first time this particular midget has been seen by human eyes. The scene is one of very high iteration, with even a maxiter of 300,000 not quite resolving the midget. At 36,600, the logmap is also set unusually high. The temperature in the 50's (around 13C), the hazy skies, and the light winds, were notably forgettable. The cats were happy in the yard however, and this was very memorable. As the day ended, the satisfied cats had their heads in their tuna dishes. And now it's time for me to tackle that building pile of work. When I finish, I'll tackle the Mandelbrot set. FOTD -- November 23, 2003 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's trip into the Mandelbrot set takes us into a previously unexplored (at least by me) valley on the north shore of the main bay. The exact valley in question is the east branch of the sixth valley of the series of valleys along the center line of the large north bud. In this valley, which is far too remote to have been given a name, broad areas of quasi-order are sprinkled with scepter-shaped areas of near-total chaos. The midget in the image is located in one of these scepter-like areas of chaos. The nature of the area is reflected in the nearly-straight arms radiating from the midget. I have tried to raise the impact of the scene by giving it a rather intense color palette, though even the colors cannot raise the rating beyond that of an everyday 6. But it's still a striking scene, and the render time of five minutes is reasonably fast. The dynamic fractal cats were near angels, as expected. They spent most of the day lounging in the grass, wishing more warm sun could get through the evergreen holly trees at the bottom of the yard. Luckily, the temperature of 66F 19C was mild enough to keep them comfortable. As I watched them just lying there, I remembered the days not too many years ago, when they would have spent the day dashing about like kittens. Today is due to be a repeat, though now, at 9:00am, a light fog is drifting in, and the grass is still too wet with dew for their sensitive paws. My plans for the day are still uncertain. The work is caught up, but there is always the chance that I'll be drafted into a trip to one of the countless local antique malls. FOTD -- November 22, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: After surprising myself with the things I found yesterday in the deep chaos on the northwest shore of the main bay, I decided to continue my exploration today in another chaotic area. Today's image continues the same theme as yesterday's, though this time we examine the northeast shore of the main period-2 bud of the Mandelbrot set rather than the northwest shore of the main bay. The overall appearance of today's image is similar to yesterday's, the increased coverage of orderly areas being the main difference. If today's image rather than yesterday's had appeared first, I might have given it a rating of an 8. Since it is a repeat however, I can rate it at only a 7. But with its gold chaos filled with hints of Siegel disks and the blue aura around the chaos, it is still a worthy image, well worth the 14 minutes required to render it from the parameter file. FOTD -- November 21, 2003 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to the region of the Mandelbrot set that produces Siegel disks when sliced in the Julia direction. It is not exactly Siegel disk territory however. True Siegel disks are found in the Julia sets of the total chaos on the exact edge of the main bay, and are of infinite iterations, which makes them impossible to calculate even though they do exist. Today's image contains things that are almost Siegel disks however. The things that resemble stuffed olives are about as close as one can come to Siegel disks in the M-set. By striking the space bar twice with today's image on the screen, one may draw a Julia fractal that is virtually a 'Siegel disk' fractal, but that's another story. (Still another story is the appear- ance of this part of the Julibrot when sliced in the odd direc- tions.) Yet another story is the things known as 'Herman's rings', which I remember being discussed on one of the fractal lists a number of years ago. Unfortunately, I have no idea what 'Herman's rings' are. Today's image is actually a rather new appearing fractal in the M-set, and deserves its rating of an 8, especially since the parameter file renders in a speedy 3 minutes plus 1/100 of one second, at least on my tired old machine with the exhaust fan that must be started by hand. The location of today's image is in the tip of a curving area of chaos in a valley of a tiny bud on the northwest shoreline of the main bay. Much of its impact is due to the coloring, on which I spent some extra time. This would appear to make it somewhat a work of art, though I claim no credit for the things actually done by the numbers. While the cats enjoyed these great conditions in the yard, the man finished the nominal amount of work that had accumulated since the preceding day ended. The day came to a close with everyone happy, which is quite an unusual event. Today and tomorrow promise to be repeats, so it looks like happi- ness will be the rule. FOTD -- November 20, 2003 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: With today's scene, we again take a trip into the depths of the Mandelbrot set. We choose the basin of the midget at -1.47 on the X-axis to be the scene of our trip. This midget is surrounded by radiating filaments, with the location of today's scene found on a small filament on the northeast shore. The midget in the image is of the fourth order, meaning it is located near a midget, near a midget, near a midget, near the midget at -1.47. For some reason known only to the mathematical illuminati, when a midget is located in one or more basins of attraction of larger midgets, the number of elements surrounding the midget resets itself several times as the midget is neared. Thus, instead of having the series 4,8,16,32...infinity, we have 4,8,16,32,...infinity, 8,16,32,64...infinity, 16,32,64,128... infinity, and so on. Today's midget shows this quirk quite clearly. And other than having this curiosity, it is a fairly lively scene, maybe not quite worth the half-hour required to render it from the para- meter file, but certainly worth the effort to go online and download the completed GIF image from Paul's web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> or from Scott's site at: <http://sdboyd.dyndns.org/~sdboyd/fotd/index.html> Rating the image was no problem. Considering the image itself and the time required to render it, I could rate it no higher than a 6. Pictures of scenes such as this are fairly common. (Had I found today's image 10 years ago, it might have rated an 8.) The weather in the Fractal Central area on Wednesday was violent to say the least. Torrential rain in the afternoon caused the local streams to flood, resulting in three deaths and several rescues. The temperature reached 68F 20C, but with flash flood conditions prevailing, the fractal duo wisely chose to remain indoors, asking for tuna. Today is starting sunny, but the wind is blowing, and the duo does not like wind, which hides the subtle sounds of approaching danger. They may be reluctant to venture out of doors. The fractal basement escaped with only a small puddle in the corner. My graphic work is reasonably under control. Another Mandelbrot fractal in 24 hours is a virtual certainty. Until then, take care, and keep your fractals dry. (Come to think of it, I have never seen a wet fractal.)
