NOTE: This image has been changed from the original version. ===================================================== CLASSIC F.O.T.D., October 03, 1997 (Cirrus) Fractal visionaries: Today's unusual fractal is a view of the sky -- nothing solid, just vapor and ice crystals. I was undecided whether to name it "Cirrus" or "Skyscape". I finally decided on "Cirrus", but I could just as easily have given it the other name. There may still be some who doubt that clouds are one of nature's fractals. If so, today's picture should end that doubt. It is a photograph taken from a window of F.C., showing a clear blue sky filled with cirrus streamers. Well, actually it's not a photograph at all, but rather a scene in the Z^2+C Julibrot, sliced in the oblate direction, in the area of the second valley beyond Seahorse valley, the one at -1.368 on the X-axis. One of my fractal projects is to collect fractal representations of all the cloud types. I have had several fine cumulonimbus cloud fractals for quite some time, but today's cirrus fractal is my best cirrus scene to date. That leaves nimbus and stratus fractals yet to be found. And of course I'll also want all the combination clouds, such as cirro-cumulus and alto-cumulus, etc. The formula draws the oblate slices of the Julibrot, which I define as the slices determined by the Mandelbrot Y-axis and the Julia X-axis. The VB in the formula name stands for Variable Bailout. I recently discovered that a very low bailout radius does strange things in some of the odd planes, particularly in that area known as Seahorse Valley, so I altered my formulas to add an easily changed bailout feature. BTW, I wonder what happened to Elephant Valley at the east end of the Mandelbrot set. It has some very good fractal scenes also, and one almost never hears about it. Classic FOTD 10-06-00 (A Head of Bubbles)

Do not go to the fractal image of June 2000. Today's version is a slight outzoom of the original image. The color has also been refined. ========================================================== CLASSIC FOTD, June 10, 2000 (Break-away Fractal [6]) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is another surrealistic scene created with one of the MandNewt formulae, which are actually the Ikenaga function in disguise. I chose formula number 1 to explore for today's image, and the formula did not let me down. As is the case with many images created with these formulas, the inside fill has been set to bof60, which has a tendency to create bubbles. The bof61 inside fill also works well with these formulas, as was demonstrated with yesterday's FOTD. The picture itself is another surrealistic one, with a mass of bubbly froth at the bottom and bubbles of assorted sizes and shapes all through the scene. The largest bubble is off-screen, though its lower part fills the upper left of the picture. The intense purple background speaks of infinite depth. I named the picture "A Head of Bubbles" when I noticed the effect of individual bubbles breaking away from the mass of froth. The parameter file takes all of 6-1/2 minutes to render on a P200 machine. Classic FOTD 30-05-00 (Octagonal Star)

CLASSIC FOTD, May 30, 2000 (Octagonal Star [7]) Fractal enthusiasts and visionaries: Distracted as I was by Tippy, the fractal cat, my finger paused a bit too long on the <1> key as I was entering the parameters for today's fractal, causing me to inadvertently enter 111111.... instead of the 11 I had intended as the value of imag(p2). "What the heck," I mumbled as I saw the string of ones. "Let's see what these parameters will do." Substituting a decimal point for the third digit, I let the formula do its thing. As expected, I found that the extra digits have almost no effect on the appearance of the parent fractal. On a whim I set real(p3) to 0.3. The formula then created a grossly oversized and nearly indescribable fractal with grossly underestimated potential. A bit of searching revealed things in the fractal that looked like a space alien's antenna with a bulb on the end. I investigated one of these antenna bulbs. As I went deeper into the bulb, I came to an area of sickle- shaped elements, and soon I found the two symmetrical features that usually mean a midget is hiding there. As today's picture shows, I was once again right. With its star-like coloring and delicate filaments, today's fractal looks pleasing from both near and far, easily deserving its above-average rating of 7. When I saw the eight-pointed star effect, I named the picture "Octagonal Star". Coinciden- tally, the time the parameter file takes to render on a P200 machine is almost exactly 7 minutes. Yes, I realize that fractalists are sometimes very busy people, so the GIF image has been posted to: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The fractal weather today was dry but cloudy and quite cool, with a raw east wind and a temperature of 61F (16C) that kept all but the hardiest picnickers safely indoors. And now for the bad news . . . yes, I once again failed to philosophize. My humblest apologies to the disappointed and my sincerest empathies to the relieved. But all is not lost, for the longer the philosophy takes to ripen, the better it will be when it's finally ready. So brace yourself for imminent and unexpected philosophical enlightenment. Hi: I have "lurking" around the fractint discussion group for some years. (Just at the moment I still can't figure out how to get Fractint to work with Windows XP -- and don't tell me about DOS boot disks or multiple partitions.) Anyway, I have an almost new copy of Fractal Creations 2nd Ed, complete with CD, 3 !/2 " floppy and 3-D glasses that I am willing to sell for $10 plus shipping -- say $5. Let the bidding begin! <g> I have Frcatal Creations 2nd ed. CD and I will sell (a copy of) it for $9 plus shipping! Also have Fractals for Windoze (Winfract 18.21, original installation floppy) and old CD's like "FracTools 3.0", "Fractal Generators", "Fractal Frenzy 1 & 2", Fractal Ecstasy". These are early '90's vintage; alot of Lee Skinner and other pix, primitive animations, etc. Serious collectors items. You can still find these floating around at computer shows or bookstores, also online sales if you know where to look ...
