I have managed to compile and run fractint using Borland C 3.1 IDE My problem is that I cannot step through the code. When I try to 'step into' I get a popup message saying: ' WARNING: no debug info. Run anyway ? ' If you select Yes it just runs the whole program. Thanks, Newman

FOTD -- September 16, 2002 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The fractal for today is a winner, a little gem that honestly earns its immodest rating of 8. It was created with my little- used MandelbrotMix3 formula, which combines four different powers of Z but leaves finding a critical point up to the user. Luckily, I have another formula which finds the critical points graphically, so this is not too much of a problem. Today's image is partially evaporated, consisting as it does of 80 percent inside and 20 percent outside. The greatest surprise came when, trying different inside fills, I found that the < zmag > fill gives the most pleasing results. Normally, this fill results in too chaotic an effect, but in today's already- chaotic scene, it works to near perfection. The straight criss-crossing ridge-like areas that fill the background are most unusual. They appear to have been intro- duced artificially, but they are quite natural. A midget of sorts lies at the center of attention, where the most prominent ridges cross. The midget is not really all there, but its strange energy field is very much present, being revealed by the inside fill. Since the image is filled with X's, I named it "X Marks the Spot". One glance at the image will show that the rating of 8 is fully justified. FOTD -- September 14, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I guess I must apologize for the pathetic discussion I wrote for the most recent FOTD, which appeared on Sep 12. The reason was my angry mood. While being fully reminded of what happened last Sep 11, I heard that my childhood football hero, John Unitas, had just died. As a result, my mood was such that if I had written what I felt at the time, someone would certainly have been offended. Today however, my mood is a bit better, though still not up to average. One thing that helps is that I have found a way to greatly reduce the annoyance of the junk e-mail that floods my jamth mailbox. The technical help department at Mindspring, which is actually Earthlink, told me a way to read the subject lines of my mail without downloading it, and delete the unwanted mail directly from the server. I should have thought of it myself. It doesn't eliminate the spam, but it does eliminate the wait of up to 15 minutes to download stuff that will be deleted immediately on my own machine. Today's image comes from 6 levels down the infinite spiral of the Z^(sqrt(2))+C fractal. I don't know exactly what that means, but the real(p2) parameter of today's formula is set to -6, so it must mean something. The parent of today's picture is a rather ordinary Mandeloid fractal with a main bay and, on the south side of the bay, off the screen, a large bud. A long filament meanders south from the bud. Today's scene, with its tiny midget, is located on this filament, rather near to where it joins the bud, in an area rich with semi-organized chaos. A far larger midget lies near today's scene, not far out the filament. This larger midget is not quite as worthy as the one in today's image. I named the image "The Root is Square" because although the number 2 has an infinity of roots, only the square one is involved in today's picture. Then I gave the image a rating of 7. I kind of enjoy the electric-arc effect of the scene. The 7-minute render time of the parameter file is acceptable to all but the busiest fractal fans. At least the humidity remained relatively low, making for a day that rated a 6 on my scale of weather worth. Now it's Saturday morning, and the day promises to be a near- repeat of yesterday. There is some yard work to be done, which can be avoided if I'm clever enough. But it's a no-win situa- tion. If I skip the work, I'll feel guilty; if I do the work, I'll miss a chance for a totally relaxing day. I'll probably do the work. FOTD -- September 10, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: At first glance, today's image gives the impression of a scene lying deep in the range of arbitrary precision math. But the impression is not accurate. A glance at the parameter file will reveal a magnitude of only 5x10^5, and arbitrary precision math doesn't even work with 'type=formula' fractals. The effect of great magnitude is created partly by the nature of the image itself and partly because the parent fractal, which resembles a lacework doughnut, is grossly enlarged. The large size of the parent fractal means that the scene in effect actually lies somewhat deeper than the magnitude indicates. The name I gave the image, "Not at all Deep", was inspired by this illusory impression of great magnitude. The midget at the center of today's image lies in the remote suburbs of a larger midget located in the northern part of the bloated doughnut area of the parent fractal. The formula, which combines iterated portions of Z^(-2) and (1/Z), is quite simple, but as I have often stated, in the world of fractals, simple formulae sometimes create incredible images. The rating of 6 appears about right for this image, which impresses me as being just the slightest bit above average. FOTD -- September 12, 2002 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's discussion will be brief. When one is in as sour a mood as I am, it's better to remain silent than to speak out and risk offending. Today's fractal is another of my evaporated ones. I colored it with a palette of dark blues and indigo, and named it "A Somber Minibrot". The rating of 7 might be a bit over-optimistic, but who cares. The outzoom will reveal a horseshoe crab floating in a lagoon -- but what the heck. FOTD 08-09-02 (Bluebrot [6])

FOTD -- September 08, 2002 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Blue and orange -- my old high-school colors -- that's the color scheme of today's image, which adds just a bit of Z^3 to Z before adding C. It's not that I'm trying to regain some of that long-gone school spirit; it's that these particular colors make the most of a routine image of just another midget. The exact amount of Z and Z^3 is determined by the real(p3) parameter, and is extremely critical. The formula, like many formulae created by M-Mix4, actually behaves as though the real(p3) parameter brought the formula near an asypmtotic point, where the fractal undergoes a sudden drastic change. The name "Bluebrot" was not named after my high-school football team, which was called the "Engineers", and usually whipped the starch out of their rival team down the road, which went by the name of the "Knights". The image's name is simply the shortest and most appropriate descriptive name I could come up with after a few minutes pondering the image. I wish I could rate the image something above a boringly average 5, but honesty prevails here at Fractal Central, and I always give the images a rating that reflects my degree of satisfaction or dis-satisfaction. If the parameter file ran in a minute or two, the rating might have been higher. As it is, the 36-minute render time is a bit much for such a mediocre image . . . except for the curious, that is. But relief in the form of the completed GIF image is at hand. FOTD -- September 06, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Before posting my FOTD's, I always check the attached parameter files to see that they work. Almost without exception the files run as they should. However, when posting the most recent FOTD, the one for Sep. 4, I neglected for some reason to check the parameter file before clicking the send button. This oversight gave Murphy's law the chance it needed to work its mischief. When I finally did check the file later in the day, I found that a backslash was missing from the end of a broken line, causing an error message to appear when the file was run. My apologies for any inconvenience. Today's attached parameter file most definitely will run. The image it will draw will take 7 minutes to complete, and hope- fully will be worth the time spent. The image that will appear lies in the fractal that results when -1.1 parts of Z are com- bined with -1.1 parts of Z^20 before adding C. This parent fractal is actually a classic Mandelbrot set caught in the act of morphing into the Z^20 Mandeloid. Today's scene lies in a curving valley at the mouth of a small bay on the east edge of the distorted M-set. I named the image "Quatrain", though I can't say why. A quatrain is a four-line stanza of a poem. Maybe I noticed the nearly square olive-green feature around the obligatory central midget. Regardless, it's a striking image, which looks as good from a distance as it does up close. Not wanting to appear boastful, I rated it a 6, which is above average, though not by much. The trip back out of the parent fractal is interesting also. Those with a little time to spare might wish to change the logmap to 0, the passes to G and make the journey at thumbnail size. FOTD -- September 04, 2002 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image mixes some Z^3 with some Z and produces a Mandelbrot set with a new open area caught in the act of opening on the X-axis some distance to the west. (This new area is quite sensitive to small changes in the real(p3) parameter.) The Mandelbrot set part of the parent holds pretty much the same features as the classic M-set, but the newly-opened area to the west contains some entirely new features. One of these new features is a double valley. In the classic M-set, Double valleys usually indicate a non-critical environment, but in the world of the M-Mix4 formula there are no hard and fast rules, so I decided to take a look into one of the several arms in this double valley, where I found an interesting environment, better viewed than described. Today's scene is located in the suburbs of a larger midget near the end of a filament in the double valley. The trip down, which is rather interesting, can be seen in reverse by changing the logmap setting to 0 and doing multiple outzooms. Unlike I do in most of my FOTD's, I did not rotate today's image to the normal position, with the main stem of the midget facing west. The reason is simple -- though I know it is there, I have never seen the midget at the center. Unfortunately, the midget is beyond resolution. The invisibility of the midget inspired the name "The Unseen Midget". The rating of 6, based on the pattern around the midget alone, seems fair. All is not lost however, for as the pattern indicates, today's midget lies in the suburbs of a larger midget, and this larger midget is nearly exactly the same as the unseen midget in today's image. (I can tell by the pattern.) So a trip out to see the larger midget will give a good idea of the appearance of today's unseen midget. The drawback to all this exploration is the slowness of the image, which takes nearly an hour to render on my machine, but if the passes is reset to <g> and the exploration is done at thumbnail size, the trip is do-able. But I have a very good idea of how I'll get from busy to idle -- and that is to finish the work that needs to be done. And if I hope to finish, I must begin.
