This Explains BYU’s Current Starting Quarterback Situation
How Many Bars? 7 or 8?
Every BYU football fan has an opinion on who should be BYU’s starting quarterback when the Cougars take the field against Arizona on September 1.
Just check the papers, internet and chat rooms for proof.
Here’s the deal. I have my opinion and you have yours. Those who are allowed to watch scrimmages are certain they know who the guy should be.
Based on the image above, however, sometimes we don’t see things that others do. My eyes and your eyes don’t matter. Here are the eyes that do and that will make the decision.
Sitake Grimes
Roderick
That would be Kalani Sitake, Jeff Grimes and Aaron Roderick. They know what they see and based on their salaries, should be able to tell who the quarterback is that gives BYU the best chance to win games.
Team: They have no say, but what they see and think does matter.
The word I get is that the team will be told who the starter will be on Monday, but coaches won’t announce anything to the public. Good luck with that. If players know, players’ parents know and then the internet knows and soon the whole world knows. The last scrimmage coming this week will have the starter, Mangum or Wilson take at least 75% of the reps.
I still have my opinion and I base it on these eyes.
Rich Rodriquez Brandon Dawkins Khalil Tate
Brandon Dawkins started at the season at QB last season for Arizona. Against Colorado in the 4th game of the year, he tweaked his ankle and Khalil Tate came on in relief. He never left the field again. So, what did Rodriquez and the rest of his offensive staff see in Dawkins that they couldn’t see in Tate until injury forced them to use him and the rest is offensive history? Obviously, they made the wrong choice coming out of fall camp. But why?
Here’s my take on what might have happened and what I think will happen with BYU at the start of the season.
It has to do with these eyes.
All eyes should be on these seven BYU offensive linemen: Jimenez, Chambers, Christensen, Hoge, Empey, Herring and Shoaf against Arizona.

Mangum Wilson

Says BYU offensive coaches are going to start Mangum to see if the BYU offensive line can protect him. This line is touted as being improved, even by me, but there is no way that they are going to put Wilson on the field until it is proven that the offensive line can protect him and give him a productive running game.
That’s why my pick is Mangum. He has been beaten up before and can deal with it. Nobody knows how Wilson, even though he is more talented and athletic, will deal with college pressure up front. Until BYU proves they can protect Wilson, he won’t be thrown to the wolves. If BYU’s offensive line lives up to their preseason hype, then it will be even money that Wilson plays and plays often. Until then, I call it a lock that Mangum will start against Arizona.
