Writers Lin Ostler and Gray Thomas willpresent their work on February 10th at the Salt Lake City PublicLibrary at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Since shespearheaded the first literary magazine--Satori-- at her first college, Lin Ostler has been the engaged inwriting, reading and sharing poetry. With a fresh B.A. degree in English andFrench, she taught literature in Edmonton, Alberta for a while, then helpedestablish Marmalade Hill “free” school in Salt Lake City, taught in a college inVermont, and has guided writers’ workshops through various agencies of UtahArts, all the while being a Yoga Instructor for over 40 years, a mother for 35.Ostler’s work hasbeen danced, manifest and incorporated into multi-cultural collaborations such as“Moving the Stone” and “Emergents--Tracks in the Motherline” since her initialaward-winning poem--Woman, the Pioneer-- illustrating a dance piece in1971.Several times since 2010, she has placed in the Iron Pen Marathon, as shedid in the 1995 Utah Arts Original Writing competition.Most recently,Ostler has been asked to read with her international group of poet friend, theFaraway Poets, in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Ojai, California. George JishoRobertson of London says of her poetry: “This is the authentic voice of beingalive... it inspires with its lived particularity and lucidly involveddetachment - truly from the Apex embracing the senses and creativeintelligence. Your feeling for the texture and sound of words is elegant andmoving.” Gray Thomas grew up in Salt Lake City, UT.For the past several years, he has been involved with the Salt Lake Cityperformance poetry community. He has been a member of five Salt Lake City slamteams, reaching semi-finals twice. He has represented Salt Lake City twice atthe Individual World Poetry Slam. He co-founded the University of Utah PoetrySlam Team (YouSpeak) and the non-profit Wasatch Wordsmiths. He received his BAin English from the University of Utah, and is currently a graduate student ofWestminster College’s Strategic Communications program. City Art islongest running literary arts series in Salt Lake. We present authors of allgenres as well as artists and musicians on the first three Wednesdays of eachmonth at the Main Public Library from September to May. We feature both localas well as nationally and internationally acclaimed writers. Most featuredreadings are followed by an open reading. City Art is sponsored by the UtahArts Council, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, Catalyst, the Salt Lake City Public Library, Xmission, and the Zoo,Arts, and Park Fund.
