Writer Michael Mejia and Music with Te Azul (Carr, Cervino-Wood, Miller)  at City Art

            Writer Michael Mejia will read from his work and musical group Te Azul will perform May 2nd at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. 


Michael Mejia is the author of the novels TOKYO and Forgetfulness, and his writing has been published in many journals and anthologies. A recipient of fellowships from the NEA and the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, he is editor in chief of Western Humanities Review, co-founding editor of Ninebark Press, and a professor of creative writing at the University of Utah.

 

 

Te Azul's exciting and thoughtful music ranges from ballads and pop to

burning cutting edge jazz.  It's members represent some of Utah's most

respected musicians including U/U jazz professors and Emmy Winning

Award band Red Rock Rondo players.

Flavia Cervino-Wood (violin) studied classical violin at the

Conservatory of Music in Santiago and at the Universidad Católica de

Chile. She moved to Brazil to join the band Grupo Agua, which toured

South America and performed and recorded with Milton Nascimento. She

moved to New York and performed with the Brockport Symphony.  She then

moved to San Francisco where she was active in the Latin music

scene. She is a featured soloist with Sol y Luna along with Rebecca

Mauleon and Michael Spiro.  She has performed with Cecil Taylor,

Marilyn Lerner and John Cage compositions with the Merce Cunningham

Dance Company.  In Utah she has performed and recorded with blue

haiku, Red Rock Rondo, the Salt Lake Symphony, Hal Cannon, and the

Alan Michael Band.

Geoffrey Miller (guitar and compositions) is Assistant Professor at

University of Utah School of Music.  He has shared the stage with jazz

luminaries such as Steve Lacy, Mulgrew Miller, Bob Brookmeyer, Brian

Bromberg, Gregory Hutchinson, and John Stowell.  Geoffrey performs

with Greg Floor Quartet, SLAJO, The John Flanders Trio, Utah Symphony,

Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Pioneer Memorial Theater, the Dave Bowen

Orchestra, Joshua Payne Orchestra, Te Azul, and Alan Michael, and with

his own group.  He holds a Master's degree from the New England

Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied with Steve Lacy,

Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, Bob Brookmeyer, Cecil McBee, Ben

Monder, Gene Bertoncini.

Harold Carr (acoustic bass and compositions) has been active in the

Utah music scene for decades, working with bands such as Wood,

Amnesia, Jarmen/Kingston Quartet, blue haiku, Red Rock Rondo and the

Mark Chaney Trio. Internationally he has performed and recorded with

people such as Bobby McFerrin, Crystal Gayle, Lightnin' Hopkins, John

McCuen, Catie Curtis, Steve Lacy and Matt Flinner. He has been

musician-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada,

soloist at the Frutillar Music Festival in Chile, invited poet for the

Utah State Governor and commissioned composer/performer at New Music

America.

 

 

Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. City Art is sponsored by the Utah Arts Council, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, Catalyst, the Salt Lake City Public Library, Xmission, and the Zoo, Arts, and Park Fund.
