Poets Janine Joseph and Mike White will read from their works on Wednesday November 20th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. A finalist for the 2013 Tupelo Press Dorset Prize, as well as the OSU/The Journal Award in Poetry and Alice James Books Beatrice Hawley Award, Janine Joseph’s poems have appeared in Kenyon Review Online, Painted Bride Quarterly, Asian American Literary Review, Best New Poets 2011, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Third Coast, and elsewhere. She also wrote a commissioned libretto, entitled “From My Mother’s Mother,” for the Houston Grand Opera’s “Song of Houston: East + West” series. Janine holds an MFA from New York University and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston, where she was a poetry editor for Gulf Coast. She has taught creative writing, literature, and composition at the University of Houston and New York University, as well as with Writers in the Schools, Community~Word Project, and the Starworks Foundation. Janine is a recipient of a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, an Inprint/Barthelme Fellowship in Poetry, a Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center Fellowship for Collaboration Among the Arts, and an Academy of American Poets prize. She is currently an editor for Tongue: A Journal of Writing & Art and is an Assistant Professor of English at Weber State University. Mike White is the author of HOW TO MAKE A BIRD WITH TWO HANDS, which won the 2011 Washington Prize. White grew up in Montreal, and lived in Canada until 2001. With a Bachelor's degree from The University of Toronto and a Masters from McGill University, he headed south to the University of Utah's doctoral program in Literature and Creative Writing. He served as the poetry editor and editor- in-chief of Quarterly West and teaches literature and creative writing courses at the University of Utah. His poems have appeared in Poetry, The New Republic, The Threepenny Review, The Iowa Review, The Antioch Review, Field, Witness, and many others. Work has also been featured online at Poetry Daily and Verse Daily. He maintains ties with the Canadian literary scene, with poems in Canadian journals such as The Malahat Review , The Dalhousie Review , and The Fiddlehead.
