Writers Sandy Anderson and HowardWilkerson will present their work on May 4th at the Salt Lake CityPublic Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. SandyAnderson has been involved in organizing and giving poetryreadings and workshops since 1965. Shewas a founding member of Salt Lake Younger Poets in the 1960’s, Word Affair inthe 70’s and 80’s, and City Art in the 90’s. She has been artist in residence at Valley and Alta High School, and hasgiven workshops to groups of disabled, Veterans, and prisoners.. She was the 1997 recipient of the Salt LakeCity Mayor’s Award in Literature, and the 1995 Writers at Work Writing AdvocateAward. She has edited collections of poems by Ken Brewer, Nancy Takacs, andMiriam Murphy, Willie Newbrough, and three collections of poetry by thedisabled. Anderson’schapbook, Jeanne Was Once a Player of Pianos, was published byLimberlost Press in 1998. Her book, Atthe Edge in White Robes, was published by Ghost Planet Press in 1978. She is included in the anthologies Greatand Peculiar Beauty: A Utah Reader, The Trubador Anthology, and TheGreat Salt Lake Anthology. She wasthe editor of the first issue of Wasatch Front, which won first place inthe literary magazine category in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate PressAssociation, and is a former editor of City Art Journal. She has published poems in LimberlostReview, Weber Studies, The Deseret News, Echo Canyon News,Runes, and Lucid Moon. Anderson teaches piano under her married name, Sandy Wilkerson and hasserved as a judging chairman for the Salt Lake Area Chapter of the AmericanMusic Federation since the 1970’s. HowardWilkerson is a writerfrom Salt Lake city. His publications includeSierra Nevada College Review, Open Window, and a host of lesserpublications. His poetry is characterized as fairly short and compact,primarily dealing with experiences of the 1970's decade. He has been active in multiple genres of art -painting and photography, and belongs to the Poor Yorick Studios for the past8 years. His visual work has been exhibited throughout the UnitedStates. Wilkerson retired after 31 years in thedefense industry. Most featuredreadings are followed by an open reading. Writers Alex Caldiero and JoeyFranklin will present their work on April 13th at the Salt Lake CityPublic Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. AlexCaldiero: sonosopher, polyartists, and scholar of Humanities and intermedia. He makes things that at times appear as language or music or images, and then again as the shape of your own mind. Caldiero is a makar (a maker) of movement, text-sound, visual work, and installations. In addition to numerous performative works, published works include Sound Weave with Theta Naught (Differential Records), Body/Dreams/ Organs (Elik Press), Poetry Is Wanted Here! (Dream Garden Press), sonosuono, a book of memories, language, i-(e-)mmigration (Elik Press), and Some Love (Signature Books). He is co-founder of Arba Sicula, society for the preservation of Sicilian language and culture, and featured in Dictionary of the Avant-gardes (Macmillan, London), the poetry anthology Fire in the Pasture (Peculiar Pages, El Cerrito, CA), and the forthcoming anthology Dove Song, on Mother in Heaven. He is the subject of a full-length experimental documentary Alex Caldiero …in sound…in life. Caldiero is senior artist in residence, the Philosophy/ Humanities Dept. at Utah Valley University. Joey Franklinis the author of My Wife Wants You to Know I'm Happily Married(Universityof Nebraska Press, 2015). His essays and articles have appeared in Poets& Writers, Gettysburg Review,The Norton Reader,and elsewhere. Australianpoets Jen Webb, Jeri Kroll, and Paul Hetherington will present their work onApril 6th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the CityArt Reading Series. Jen Webb is a Canberra-based writer who has been publishing, performing,presenting and exhibiting her work since 1992. Currently the director of theCentre for Creative and Cultural Research at the University of Canberra whereshe is also Distinguished Professor of Creative Practice, she has taughtcreative writing for about 10 years, supervises research students in creativewriting and other creative practices, and has worked as a book editor and artsmanager. Prior to becoming an academic, Jen was an accountant and tax inspector.She is South African by origin, and has also lived in New Zealand, Canada andthe UK, before settling in Australia. Recent publications include: StolenStories, Borrowed Lines (poetry chapbook, 2015); Watching the World:Impressions of Canberra (with Paul Hetherington; poems and photographs; 2015);Researching Creative Writing (scholarly book, 2015). Jen is completing anAustralian Research Council (ARC)-funded investigation on poetry and creativeexcellence, and is working on two other ARC projects, both concerned withcreative labour and career outcomes for creative arts graduates. Professor Jeri Kroll established the creative writing program – including thedoctorate – at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia. A former Presidentof the Australasian Association of Writing Programs, she is also anaward-winning poet who has published twenty-five titles for adults and youngpeople. Criticism includes Creative Writing Studies: Practice, Research andPedagogy (Multilingual Matters, 2008) and Research Methods in Creative Writing(Palgrave Macmillan, 2013). Workshopping the Heart: New and Selected Poems(Wakefield Press, 2013) and a verse novel, Vanishing Point (Puncher andWattman, 2015), are recent books. A MainStage production of Vanishing Point washeld at George Washington University in October 2014. The play was a winner inthe 47th Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and produced inJanuary 2015 in Ohio. Vanishing Point was short-listed in the 2015 Queensland LiteraryAwards. Paul Hetherington is professor of writing at the University of Canberra andhead of the International Poetry Studies Institute (IPSI) there. In 2002 he was the recipient of aChief Minister’s ACT Creative Arts Fellowship and he was awarded one of twoplaces on the 2012 Australian Poetry Tour of Ireland. Writer Julie Checkoway and Utah’sPoet Laureate Lance Larsen will present their work on March 9th atthe Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art ReadingSeries. Julie Checkoway is a documentary filmmaker and the author of The Three-Year Swim Club, which has received wide critical praiseand has been on the Best Selling Sports Books list in The New York Times. Checkowayis also the author of the book Little Sister: Searching for the Shadow World ofChinese Women (Viking Penguin) and the editor of thebestselling Creating Fiction.Her writing has appeared in the NewYork Times, Salt LakeTribune, and HuffingtonPost. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, HuffingtonPost, and numerous anthologies. In 2001, she gave up tenureat the University of Houston (where she had been a professor and director ofthe creative writing program) and while producing and reporting radio storiesfor NPR’s Morning Edition and PRI’s ThisAmerican Life, she came across the story of artist BillyPappas. With the encouragement of her older brother, she set out tomake Waiting for Hockney,her first film. She graduated from Harvard College, the Iowa WritersWorkshop, and the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars. She is the recipient of aNational Endowment for the Arts individual artist grant and fellowships atwriters’ colonies, including Yaddo. She lives in Salt Lake City with herhusband and two daughters. Lance Larsen’s fourth collection of poems, GeniusLoci, was recently published by University of Tampa Press. His earlier collections include BackyardAlchemy (2009), In All TheirAnimal Brilliance (2005), and ErasableWalls (1998). He holds a PhD from the University ofHouston. His work appears widely, in such venues as Georgia Review,Southern Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, River Styx, Orion, The Pushcart PrizeAnthology, Best American Poetry 2009, Poetry Daily, and elsewhere. Hisnonfiction has twice made the Notable Essay list in Best American Essays. He is currently working on Seventeen Waysto Float, a collection of essays about place, family, and memory,which won 1st place in the 2011 Utah Original Writing Competition. Hegrew up in Idaho and Colorado and lived in Chile for two years while serving anLDS mission. He collects antiques, plays basketball, occasionally walkson his hands, grows daylilies, hikes, and loves Indian and Thai food. Hesometimes collaborates with his wife, Jacqui Biggs Larsen, a painter andmulti-media artist. Since 1993 he has taught literature and creative writingat BYU, where he currently serves as associate chair. He and Jacquirecently directed a study abroad program in Madrid. Writers Lin Ostler and Gray Thomas willpresent their work on February 10th at the Salt Lake City PublicLibrary at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Since shespearheaded the first literary magazine--Satori-- at her first college, Lin Ostler has been the engaged inwriting, reading and sharing poetry. With a fresh B.A. degree in English andFrench, she taught literature in Edmonton, Alberta for a while, then helpedestablish Marmalade Hill “free” school in Salt Lake City, taught in a college inVermont, and has guided writers’ workshops through various agencies of UtahArts, all the while being a Yoga Instructor for over 40 years, a mother for 35.Ostler’s work hasbeen danced, manifest and incorporated into multi-cultural collaborations such as“Moving the Stone” and “Emergents--Tracks in the Motherline” since her initialaward-winning poem--Woman, the Pioneer-- illustrating a dance piece in1971.Several times since 2010, she has placed in the Iron Pen Marathon, as shedid in the 1995 Utah Arts Original Writing competition.Most recently,Ostler has been asked to read with her international group of poet friend, theFaraway Poets, in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Ojai, California.
