Jacqueline Osherow and Patrick Madden will read from their work April 19th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 6:30 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Jacqueline Osherow’s ninth collection of poems, Divine Ratios, was published by LSU Press in 2023. She’s received grants from the John SimonGuggenheim and Ingram Merrill Foundations, the NEA, and the Witter Bynner Prize. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Best American Poetry, The Norton Anthology of Jewish-American Literature, The Penguin Book of the Sonnet and many other anthologies and journals. She’s Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Utah. Patrick Madden is the author of three award-winning essay collections, Disparates (2020), Sublime Physick (2016), and Quotidiana (2010), and coeditor of After Montaigne (2015). Poets Kate Gales and Katherine Coles will read their work, March 15th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 6:30 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Dr. KATE GALE is co-founder and Managing Editor of Red Hen Press, Editor of the Los Angeles Review. She teaches in the Low Residency MFA program at the University of Nebraska in Poetry, Fiction and Creative Non-Fiction. She is the author of the The Loneliest Girl from the University of New Mexico Press and of seven books of poetry including The Goldilocks Zone from the University of New Mexico Press in 2014, and Echo Light from Red Mountain in 2014 and six librettos including Rio de Sangre, a libretto for an opera with composer Don Davis, which had its world premiere October 2010 at the Florentine Opera in Milwaukee. She speaks on independent publishing at schools including USC, Harvard, Columbia and Oxford University. Her opera in process is the web opera and an opera on Che Guevara is in process with Cuban composer Armando Bayolo. Her opera on Esther written for the singer Hila Plitmann is in process with the composer Mark Abel. Katharine Coles’ ninth collection of poems, Ghost Apples, will be out in May from Red Hen Press, which has also published several other of her collections, including Wayward (2109) and The Earth Is Not Flat (2013) Her prose books include The Stranger I Become: on Walking, Looking, and Writing (essays), Look Both Ways (memoir), and two novels. She served as the third Poet Laureate of Utah and Poet-in-Residence at the Natural History Museum of Utah and the Salt Lake City Public Library for the Poets House FIELD WORK program. She has received awards from the NEA, the NEH, the National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program, and the Guggenheim Foundation. Alex Caldiero is a teacher, polyartist, sonosopher, and scholar of humanities and inter-media. He makes things that at times appear as language or pictures or music-- and then again, as the shape of your own mind. He is co-recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant and from Utah Performing Arts Tour recipient of Best Poetry Award from the Association for Mormon Letters, and the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Award for Literature. He is senior artist in residence at Utah Valley University.His publications include Sound Weave with Theta Naught (Differential Records), sonosuono (Elik), Poetry Is Wanted Here! Forthcoming: Per-Sonal Effects. Ogden’s Poet Laureate Angelika Brewer is a writer, an artist and a creativity enthusiast. She was taught to read, write and embrace her creativity by her teenage mother and her almost entirely blind grandmother. This everlasting act of love was the foundation for a lifetime of creative pursuits. Angelika poured herself into notebook pages and easels for her entire childhood, promising that one day, she'd build a career out of her big ideas and her drive to bring them to fruition. A gentle push to a microphone from a high school English teacher brought Angelika into the world of Spoken Word Poetry. Along with her existing love of art and literature, an additional passion blossomed for works intended to be heard. She was invited back to her high school after graduation to teach students about Spoken Word Poetry and the power of creativity. She began visiting other schools and public events across Utah, sharing poetry, teaching workshops, and inspiring others to create. She has been a featured speaker at the Utah Conference for Teachers of English, Kiwanis Club, Ogden Pride Festival, PBS Utah, Standard Examiner online, Utah Arts Festival, Ogden Arts Festival, Literary Deathmatch, Concrete Rose, "Write About Now" cypher and many other events. Angelika self-published and self-bound a chapbook titled "I Don't Want to Miss You," and published in the compilation "First Moon Manual," and has over 100 digital publishings. She has coordinated poetry slams, open mics, art shows and mixed arts events in Utah cities. She is a freelance writer of anything that needs to be written, with a special interest in journalism, blog posts, essays and instructional content. Angelika was the 2017 Ogden Pride Poetry Competition winner, a coach for "Ogden Slam Team" in 2017, a judge at the "Poetry Out Loud" state slam in 2019, a 2021 runner-up in the "Utah Arts Festival" team slam with her artist collective "O-Town Dream Team," along with other awards and recognitions. Two of her books—Beautiful Bottom, Beautiful Shame: Where “Black” Meets “Queer” and The Queer Child (Duke University Press)—were national finalists for the Lambda Literary Award in LGBT Studies. Authors Lance Olsen and Kathryn Bond Stockton will read from their work, February 15th, at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 6:30 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Lance Olsen is author of more than 30 books of and about innovative writing, including, most recently, the novels My Red Heaven (Dzanc, 2020) and Skin Elegies (Dzanc, 2021). His short stories, essays, and reviews have appeared in hundreds of journals and anthologies, such as Conjunctions, Black Warrior Review, Fiction International, Village Voice, BOMB, McSweeney’s, and Best American Non-Required Reading. A Guggenheim, Berlin Prize, D.A.A.D. Artist-in-Berlin Residency, Rockefeller Bellagio Center, Pushcart Prize, and two-time N.E.A. Fellowship recipient, as well as a Fulbright Scholar (Finland), he teaches experimental narrative theory and practice at the University of Utah.Joel Long’s book Winged Insects won the White Pine Press Poetry Prize. He has essays forthcoming in Interim and Ocean State Review. In celebration of the Great Salt Lake, Nan Seymour and Joel Long will read from their work, February 1st, at the Marmalade Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library at 6:30 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. In 2015, Nan Seymour created River Writing in order to foster voice and authentic connection. Her debut poetry collection, prayers not meant for heaven, was published by Toad Hall Editions in the summer of 2021. The prayers were never meant to ascend. Instead, Nan hopes they will vine around us here on the ground, leaving us more knowingly and gladly intertwined. Throughout the 2023 Utah State legislative session, Nan served as poet-in-residence on Antelope Island, leading six week day-and-night vigil for Great Salt Lake. During the vigil, she assembled 2580 lines of poetry and praise. Her upcoming book, irreplaceable is a collective love letter to the lake, containing over 400 individual voices from a myriad of perspectives. The size of the poem exceeds the square mile area of the lakebed and is a community cry for the lake’s restoration. Nan is preparing to lead another community vigil on the receding shoreline, beginning January 16th of 2023. She will continue to advocate for Rights of Nature, legally defensible personal rights for ecosystems, including Great Salt Lake. Her poetry gives voice to their inherent right to live, flourish, and evolve in natural way. The work emerges from Nan’s devotion to repairing the breach between humans and the beyond-human world. Evaporation aims to use the humanities in conjunction with science to promote the beauty of the lake, highlight the dangers to the lake, and work toward possible solutions to the the crisis we face. He received the Salt Lake City Mayor’s Artist Award for Literary Arts and the Writers Advocate Award from Writers at Work. He lives in Salt Lake City.
