Writers Karin Anderson and Molly Gaudrywill read from their works on Wednesday, October 22nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library as part of the City Art Reading Series and the Utah Humanities Council Book Festival. This event is free and open to the public. Karin Andersonhas a Ph.D. in creative writing and poststructuralist theory from the University of Utah. She is a Professor of English at Utah Valley University where she was previously Department Chair and is currently a member of the creative writing faculty. Her writing has appeared in Sunstone, Dialogue, Western Humanities Review, Quarter After Eight, Saranac Review, American Literary Review, and in anthologies with Signature Books and University Readers Breachis a lineage. Her own cosmology at risk, she is begat again, thrust up through the arid mantle beneath the Great Salt Lake and splined up and across the big sky as a woman and a mother and a careful being who is simply flying into the wreckage The Andersons are a hardtack sort, built from gravel and loam and the echoes of Brigham Young’s voice shot out from the canyons. But the sermons do not land clearly. Instead we watch as Karin vacillates between intellectual and pioneer woman, Latter-day Saint and woman veering toward outer darkness. She marries and starts a family. With her husband growing more and more distant, even perversely hostile, they tumble together, wits against arms, for a better foothold at the base of the Wasatch Range. In 2011, Molly Gaudry was shortlisted for the PEN/Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry, and her verse novel, We Take Me Apart, was named 2nd finalist for the Asian American Literary Award for Poetry. In 2012, YesYes Books released the 3-author volume Frequencies, which includes her short fiction collection Lost July. In 2014, The Cupboard released, a collection Wild Thing of essays and poems about recovery after brain injury, and Ampersand Books reprinted We Take Me Apart in anticipation of the release of its sequel Desire: A Haunting and its prequel Remember Us. Molly is a core faculty member of the Yale Writers' Conference and is the founder of The Lit Pub. Brewin, and Kerry James Evansto read at City Art Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday October 15th, 7:00—9:00 P.M. Poets, Travis Mossotti, Mark J. Brewin, and Kerry James Evanswill read from their works on Wednesday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library as part of the City Art Reading Series and the Utah Humanities Council Book Festival. This event is free and open to the public. Travis Mossottihas worked and volunteered over the last decade alongside his wife (a carnivore biologist) with U.S. government, university and nonprofit organizations on data collection, animal captures/releases and lab work for various endangered species recovery efforts all across North America. In 2011 he was awarded the May Swenson Poetry Award for his first collection of poems, About the Dead (USU Press, 2011), and his chapbook My Life as an Island was published by Moon City Press in 2013. His second full-length collection Field Study won the 2013 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize and will be published in 2014 with Bona Fide Books. Mossotti is currently the Poet-in-Residence at the Endangered Wolf Center, and his poetry has been published in recent issues of the Antioch Review, Southern Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, and elsewhere. More information about Mossotti can be found at Saxifrage Press. Mark Jay Brewin Jr.is a graduate of the MFA program of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His poems have been published or are forthcoming in numerous journals including Southern Poetry Review, Iron Horse Literary Review, The Hollins Critic, Beloit Poetry Journal, Copper Nickel, New Madrid, Poet Lore, North American Review, Greensboro Review, Southern Humanities Review, Prairie Schooner and elsewhere. They have also placed as finalist in the Guy Owen Poetry Prize, the 2011 Third Coast Poetry Prize and the New Letters Literary Award Contest, won the Yellowwood Poetry Contest at the Yalobusha Review, as well as been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. His first book manuscript Scrap Iron won the 2012 Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize at the University of Utah Press and will be available in the 2013 Spring catalog. Mark is currently the Poetry Editor for the online publication Saxifrage Press. Kerry James Evansearned a PhD in English from Florida State University and an MFA in creative writing from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His poems have been published in Agni, Beloit Poetry Journal, Narrative, New England Review, North American Review, Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, and many other journals. He is the author of Bangalore (Copper Canyon Press, 2013).City Artis Salt Lake’s longest-running reading series and provides a unique forum for the literary arts during their weekly programs on each of the first three Wednesdays of the month from September to May at the Salt Lake City Public Library. Utah’s first Poet Laureate David Lee and Nevada poet Gailmarie Pahmeier will read from their works on Wednesday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library as part of the City Art Reading Series and the Utah Humanities Council Book Festival. This event is free and open to the public. David Lee: Born in west Texas, David Lee is the author of numerous poetry collections, including The Porcine Legacy (1974), Driving and Drinking (1979), The Porcine Canticles (1984), Wayburne Pig (1997), News from Down to the Café: New Poems (1999), and A Legacy of Shadows: Selected Poems (1999). Lee has been a boxer, pig farmer, seminary student, cotton mill worker, and the only white baseball player for a Negro League team. He received a PhD in literature, with a concentration in the poetry of John Milton, from the University of Utah. Lee explores the interaction of humans and the natural world in his poetry, depicting rural landscapes and lives and often employing a rural American dialect. His collection So Quietly the Earth (2004) portrays the lands of the American Southwest. David Lee has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He won the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Award in Poetry and the Western States Book Award in Poetry. The first poet laureate of Utah, Lee received the Utah Governor’s Award for lifetime achievement in the arts. He taught for many years at Southern Utah State University. Gailmarie Pahmeierhas been a Nevadan for nearly 30 years. She currently teaches creative writing and contemporary literature courses at the University of Nevada, where she has been honored with the Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award and the University Distinguished Teacher Award. Her work has been widely published in literary journals and anthologies, including Booth, Passager, Interim, Mudfish, New Poets of the AmericanWest (for which she won the Editor’s Choice Award), Literary Nevada, and the Autumn House Anthology of Contemporary Poetry. She is the author of the poetry collection The House on Breakaheart Road and two chapbooks from Black Rock Press. Her most recent chapbook, Shake It and It Snows, won the 2009 Coal Hill Chapbook Award; poems from this collection were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. Her literary awards include a Witter Bynner Poetry Fellowship and two Artists Fellowships from the Nevada Arts Council. In 2007, she received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. Poets Kimberly Johnson and Meg Day will read from their works on Wednesday, October 1st at 7:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Public Library as part of the City Art Reading Series and the Utah Humanities Council Book Festival. This event is free and open to the public. Kimberly Johnsonis a poet, translator, and literary critic. Her collections of poetry include Leviathan with a Hook, A Metaphorical God, and the forthcoming Uncommon Prayer. Her monograph on the poetic developments of post-Reformation poetry was published in 2014. In 2009, Penguin Classics published her translation of Virgil’s Georgics. Her poetry, translations, and scholarly essays have appeared widely in publications including The New Yorker, Slate, The Iowa Review, Milton Quarterly, and Modern Philology. Recipient of grants and fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Utah Arts Council, and the Mellon Foundation, Johnson holds an M.A. from the Johns Hopkins Writing Seminars, an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and a Ph.D. in Renaissance Literature from the University of California at Berkeley. Kimberly Johnson lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. Meg Day, selected for Best New Poets of 2013, is a 2013 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Poetry and the author of Last Psalm at Sea Level, winner of the Barrow Street Press Poetry Prize (forthcoming 2014), When All You Have Is a Hammer (winner of the 2012 Gertrude Press Chapbook Contest) and We Can't Read This (winner of the 2013 Gazing Grain Chapbook Contest). A 2012 AWP Intro Journals Award Winner, Meg has also received awards and fellowships from the Lambda Literary Foundation, Hedgebrook, Squaw Valley Writers, the Taft-Nicholson Center for Environmental Humanities, and the International Queer Arts Festival. Meg is currently a PhD candidate, Steffensen-Cannon Fellow, & Point Foundation Scholar in Poetry & Disability Poetics at the University of Utah.
