Writers Jeff Metcalf and Maximilian Werner will read from their work on May 2nd at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. An award winning writer and teacher, Jeff Metcalf lives in Salt Lake City, Utah where he teaches at the University of Utah. Metcalf is the recipient of the 2010 Utah Arts Council Award for the Essay, 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award for the University of Utah, Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education, a Fulbright Memorial Scholar Award, the National Council of English Teachers Award, the Lifetime Advocacy Award from Writers @ Work, grants from both the Utah Humanities Council and the Utah Arts Council and numerous other teaching awards. A finalist for the American Fiction Award and a first-place runner-up for the Flyway Humor Award, Metcalf currently writes jazz music review for the Deseret News and has two books under consideration for publication in 2013. Maximilian Werner is the author ofBlack River Dreams, a collection of literary fly fishing essays that won the 2008 Utah Arts Council's Original Writing Competition for Nonfiction: Book, and the novel Crooked Creek. He has two books coming out in spring of 2013, a memoir/natural history titled Chronicles of the Pleistocene Mind (Torrey House Press) and the memoir Gravity Hill (University of Utah Press). Mr. Werner's poems, fiction, creative nonfiction, and essays have appeared in several journals and magazines, including Matter Journal: Edward Abbey Edition, Bright Lights Film Journal, The North American Review, ISLE, Weber Studies, Fly Rod and Reel, and Columbia. He lives in Salt Lake City and teaches writing at the University of Utah. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. For Immediate Release Contact: City Art Director Joel Long: joeltlong(a)yahoo.com Cathy Peppers with and Novelist Lillian-Yvonne Bertram to read at City Art Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday April 4th 7:00—9:00 P.M. Idaho State University Poet Cathy Peppers will read with music by Bob Picard and the poet Lillian-Yvonne Bertram will read April 18th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Cathy Peppers and Bob Picard both grew up in the Midwest but now live on a one-hundred-year-old farmstead in Southeast Idaho and teach at Idaho State University. Cathy’s poems have recently appeared in bear creek haiku and Sugar House Review and are otherwise loosely collecting in a manuscript regressing forward / love poems in middle age. Bob is a songwriter and musician performing with his band Steelhead Redd; his music is available on steelheadredd.com and iTunes. They are currently experimenting with weaving their verses together under the moniker p&p river and blues. Lillian-Yvonne Bertram has been a Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference work-study scholar, a writer-in-residence at the Montana Artists’ Refuge, and is a Cave Canem alumna. Her poetry has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Callaloo, Gulf Coast, Harvard Review, Indiana Review, Narrative Magazine, Subtropics, and other journals. She received first place in the 2011 Summer Literary Seminars poetry contest, has won the Gulf Coast Magazine Donald Barthelme Prize for Short Prose, and has received second place in Narrative Magazine’s poetry contest. Bertram is a graduate of the writing programs at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was a 2009-2011 Gaius Charles Bolin Fellow at Williams College where she taught creative writing and literature. Her first book, But a Storm is Blowing from Paradise, won the Red Hen Press 2010 Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award, judged by Claudia Rankine. She is pursuing her PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Utah. She reads for the journals Arsenic Lobster and Quarterly West and currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with her partner and their cat, the inimitable Hipólito Yrigoyen aka CatMonster. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. Poets Mike White and Jennifer Tonge to read at City Art Salt Lake Public Library Main Branch 210 East 400 South Salt Lake City UT 84111 Wednesday April 11th 7:00—9:00 P.M. Poets Mike White and Jennifer Tonge will read from their works on April 11th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jennifer Tonge received an MFA from the University of Utah. Tonge’s poetry has been anthologized inRising Phoenix(2004) and Ravishing DisUnities: Real Ghazals in English(2000). Her poems have appeared in numerous journals, including Quarterly West, Poetry, Ploughshares, New England Review, andBellingham Review. The recipient of fellowships from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the MacDowell Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Ucross Foundation, and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Tonge has taught creative writing at the universities of Utah, Wisconsin, and Texas as well as at Butler University. She has served as poetry editor of Quarterly West, as president of Writers@Work, on the board of City Art, and as associate editor at Dawn Marano and Associates. Mike White has published poems in journals including The New Republic, Threepenny Review, The Iowa Review, Witness, and Poetry. He lives in Salt Lake City and teaches at the University of Utah. Her short fiction has been anthologized, and published in various periodicals including VLS, Story and Tin House. Her stories, “Hammam” and “Elvis Has Left the Building” were chosen for inclusion in Best American Short Stories of 1994 and 1998 respectively. “Hammam” was read on NPR’s “Selected Shorts” series. Her latest story, “The Last Speaker of the Language,” is just out in the fall 2011 issue of New Ohio Review/NOR. Anshaw is a past fellow of the Illinois Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. She teaches in the MFA in Writing program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She lives in Chicago and Amsterdam with her partner, Jessie Ewing. Most featured readings are followed by an open reading. Utah’s Poet Laureate Katharine Coles and Novelist Carol Anshaw will read fro their works on April 4th at the Salt Lake City Public Library at 7:00 P.M. as part of the City Art Reading Series. Utah’s Poet Laureate Katharine Coles’ books include the novels FIRE SEASON and THE MEASURABLE WORLD and four collections of poems, FAULT, THE GOLDEN YEARS OF THE FOURTH DIMENSION, A HISTORY OF THE GARDEN, and THE ONE RIGHT TOUCH. Her fifth collection, FLIGHT, is forthcoming from Red Hen Press in 2013. Her stories, poems, and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in THE PARIS REVIEW, THE NEW REPUBLIC, THE KENYON REVIEW, IMAGE, upstreet, and POETRY, among many other journals. Her poems have been included in numerous public arts projects, including Salt Lake City's Passages Park, for which she served on the design team; and NUMBERS AND MEASURES (www.asci.org/digital2001/bliss/bliss.htm) an installation by Anna Campbell Bliss in the Leroy Cowles Mathematics Building at the University of Utah. Her ongoing collaboration with visual artist Maureen O?Hara Ure (www.art.utah.edu/arthome) has resulted in two major installations and two artist's books, BEAST and SWOON. She has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and PEN, among many other organizations; in 2010, she traveled to Antarctica to write poems under the auspices of the National Science Foundation's Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. She is on the faculty of the English Department at the University of Utah, where she teaches creative writing and literature and, with mathematician and biologist Fred Adler (www.math.utah.edu/~adler) co-directs the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature (www.scienceandliterature.org) which she originated in 2001. In 2006, she was named to a five-year term as Utah's Poet Laureate. In addition to her position at the University of Utah, she served in 2009 and 2010 as the inaugural Director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. Carol Anshaw is the author of the novels Seven Moves, Aquamarine and Lucky in the Corner. She has won the Carl Sandburg, Society of Midland Authors, and Ferro-Grumley awards for fiction, and has been a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award three times. Her latest novel, Carry the One, is forthcoming from Simon and Schuster on March 6, 2012.
