Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Update - September 20 , 2010

Bindlestiff Family Cirkus' summer included producing NYC's first Unicycle Festival (nycunifest.com), participating in the International Juggling Conventions public shows (produced by Bindlestiff co-founder Keith Nelson), producing Cirkus Cabaret in the Spiegeltent at Summerscape, and offering circus skill summer camp programs in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Hudson. Although Bindlestiff is packing the seersucker suits away for the season, the Cirkus is ready to rock the fall:

Look for the red and white striped canvas, the towering aerial rig, and the pretty blue Cirkus Ring at FreeFest this year, your friends from The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus will be delivering an amazing spectacle.  Featuring aerial artistry on the rope by Kendra Greaves; Hula hooping, contortion and trapeze by Harvest Moon wire walking by Michael Richter; Ringmistress Philomena's flaming tongue of fire, sizzling whipcracking, and Peter Bufano's live Cirkus tunes. Shows will alternate thru the day with THOSE TWO GUYS Unicycle Stunt Team, performing the ridiculous AND the sublime on one wheel.

The Dumbo Arts Festival takes place on September 24th, 25th and 26th and attracts 150,000 visitors over 3 days and includes 150+ studios, 35+ galleries, 40+ arts organizations and a host of family friendly venues. The festival strives to offer something for everyone with artists and audiences of all ages and backgrounds. It strives to be accessible and sophisticated, to reflect New York’s creative community, to be real and flavorful, to show some grit and some polish, to be smart, creative and high quality – it is the Dumbo Arts Festival.

Come to Dumbo Brooklyn for a spectacular night of variety entertainment that will include much more than a simple song and dance. Hosted by Bindlestiff Family Cirkus co-founder Keith Nelson, Bindlestiffs Open Stage Variety Show is a non stop variety show experience that may include The Heavy Metal Magician, Kung Fu juggling, trained rats, clown bands, aerial artists, wire walkers, sword swallowers, stripping clowns, living cartoons, physical comedy, a cougar contortionist and a cowboy from the Bronx. Every show offers amazing sights, quirky surprises, and some of the best variety artists working New York and the world. Always entertaining.

Every month you can expect a different line up of emerging artists and world class entertainers. Galapagos Art Space has dedicating the one Monday of every month to New York City's variety, vaudeville, aerial, and circus artists. Celebrating works in progress, emerging artists, and professionals trying something new, this night promises many surprises.

Juggling and other arts from the circus tent are an active, non-competitive way for kids to engage the physical realm of movement with the creative impulse. Participants will learn juggling and prop manipulation, along with cool stunts like stilt walking and tightwire walking. A public show on May 25 will feature the new skills learned in Chatham's own Mini-Cirkus!
