Subject: SLFS List Four new films! SEPTEMBER ISSUE, AMREEKA, EARTH DAYS and SERAPHINE
To all our Film Society members and supporters,

*We Did It!
*In case you haven't heard, due to all of your hard work and generosity
over the last week, the Tower is was able to purchase the digital
projector it so desperately needed. It means so much to the staff,
volunteers and our supporters that you chose to give to our cause; truly
on such a rapid need, every dollar you gave made an amazing difference.
As we climbed ever closer to our goal, exciting additional news that a
very generous anonymous $5000 donation and $2500 from An Dinh and Fast
Eddie Films came in and pushed us over the top. Including all Facebook
<http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=43745351125> Cause pledges and
outside donations, we were able to raise a total of $11,020 toward this
community cause; and it ended up being enough to purchase a brand new
digital projector, an extra lens, and a high end blu-ray player. We
couldn't have done it without every single one of you who pitched in.
Every second spent to help spread the word, every dollar donated, it all
made a difference and all of us at the Salt Lake Film Society express
the deepest of gratitude.

The September Issue- get punch cards this week for three French films!
<http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1331025/>_* The September 2007 issue of
Vogue magazine weighed nearly five pounds, and was the single largest
issue of a magazine ever published. With unprecedented access, 'The
September Issue,' directed and produced by R.J. Cutler, tells the story
of legendary Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and her larger-than-life
team of editors creating the issue and ruling the world of fashion.

_*Amreeka <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/amreeka>*_ A comical,
touching, and poignant story of a single mother who leaves the West Bank
with dreams of an exciting future in the promised land of small town
Illinois.

**** Roger Ebert- "A heartwarming film, not a political dirge. Much of
this warmth comes from the actress Nisreen Faour."

_*Seraphine
<http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/seraphine?q=seraphine>*_ A
beautiful film that vividly recounts the tragic story of French naïve
painter Séraphine Louis aka Séraphine de Senlis (1864-1942), a humble
servant who becomes a gifted self-taught painter.

**** New York Magazine- "Séraphine is one of the most evocative films
about an artist I've ever seen--and in its treatment of madness one of
the least condescending."
*_

_*_*Tower
Earth Days <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/earthdays>*_ A
visually stunning, vastly entertaining and awe-inspiring look-back to
the dawn and development of the modern environmental movement---from its
post-war rustlings in the 1950s to the first wildly successful 1970
Earth Day celebration and the subsequent firestorm of political action.

**** Entertainment Weekly- "A rapturous and enlightening look at the
history of the environmental movement in America"
*_

Evil Dead II <http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0092991/>_* The Tower of Terror
midnights continue with this cult masterpiece.

"Thanks to Sam Raimi's inventive style and Bruce Campbell's hysterical
performance, the horror-comedy genre has grown into a legitimate genre,
but Evil Dead 2 will forever be the king."- Film Threat
*_

_**Held Over!*
*_
Capitalism: A Love Story <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232207/>_*
Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story explores the root causes of the
global economic meltdown and takes a comical look at the corporate and
political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore has described as the
biggest robbery in the history of this country--the massive transfer of
U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.
***1/2 Rolling Stone- "Moore's fireball of a movie could change your
life. It had me laughing with tears in my eyes."
_*Bright Star <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/brightstar>*_ >From
acclaimed director, Jane Campion, brings us an intimate drama based on
the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny
Brawne.

**** The New York Times "Ms. Campion, with her restless camera movements
and off-center close-ups, films history in the present tense, and her
wild vitality makes this movie romantic in every possible sense of the
word."

*_It Might Get Loud
<http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/itmightgetloud>_* Rarely can a
film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud
tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of
electric guitar virtuosos -- The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin),
and Jack White (The White Stripes). It reveals how each developed his
unique sound and style of playing favorite instruments, guitars both
found and invented.

**** Rolling Stone- "Does this sound like rock heaven? It is."
*_
(500) Days of Summer
<http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/500daysofsummer>_* An offbeat
romantic comedy and Sundance hit about a woman (played perfectly by
Zooey Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man
(Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her.
**** Roger Ebert- "Here is a rare movie...a delightful comedy, alive
with invention."
