To all our Film Society members and supporters,
*The Tower Still Needs Your Help!
*Thanks to all who have donated to help the Tower get a new projector!
We've received a flood of donations in the past week but are still a
little short of our goal. We realize that Facebook's Causes application
has been having some troubles so we've extended the donation deadline a
few days in order for us to catch up.
If you've yet to donate, please consider helping us out. Remember, all
donations are tax deductible and will be going towards helping a very
important community cause. We're raising money primarily through
Facebook Causes, if you're not a member of Facebook it only takes a few
seconds to sign up and start helping!
*Click here to visit the cause page and DONATE!
<
http://apps.facebook.com/causes/358352/40103119?m=bc0fb5c3>*
If you're having trouble with the cause site or would rather donate
through a check or cash, please feel free to drop by the Tower or
Broadway and let one of our helpful employees know that you'd like to
donate to the projector fund, they'll help you out. You can also email a
donation request to jim_faulkner@???
Thank you all so much! We're almost there.

Capitalism: A Love Story <
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232207/>_*
Michael Moore does it again with Capitalism: A Love Story, a doc that
explores the root causes of the global economic meltdown and takes a
comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated
in what Moore has described as the biggest robbery in the history of
this country--the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private
financial institutions.
***1/2 Rolling Stone- "Moore's fireball of a movie could change your
life. It had me laughing with tears in my eyes."
_*Bright Star <
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/brightstar>*_
Acclaimed director, Jane Campion, brings us an intimate drama based on
the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny
Brawne.
**** The New York Times- "Ms. Campion, with her restless camera
movements and off-center close-ups, films history in the present tense,
and her wild vitality makes this movie romantic in every possible sense
of the word."
_*Tower*_
_*
No Impact Man <
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/noimpactman>*_
Follow the Manhattan-based Beavan family as they abandon their
high-consumption, 5th Avenue lifestyle and try to live a year while
making no net environmental impact in this inspirational documentary.
***1/2 San Francisco Chronicle- "...enlightening, ridiculous, foreboding
and funny at the same time."
*_
The Shining <
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081505/>_* A family heads to
an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence
influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific
forebodings from the past and of the future in Stanley Kubrick's epic
nightmare of horror on 35mm.

*_
It Might Get Loud
<
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/itmightgetloud>_* Rarely can a
film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud
tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of
electric guitar virtuosos -- The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin),
and Jack White (The White Stripes). It reveals how each developed his
unique sound and style of playing favorite instruments, guitars both
found and invented.
**** Rolling Stone- "Does this sound like rock heaven? It is."
*_
(500) Days of Summer
<
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/500daysofsummer>_* An offbeat
romantic comedy and Sundance hit about a woman (played perfectly by
Zooey Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man
(Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her.
**** Roger Ebert- "Here is a rare movie...a delightful comedy, alive
with invention."
*
*
*The Baader Meinhof Complex
<
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/baadermeinhofcomplex>* Nominated
for the Best Foreign Language Oscar, The Baader Meinhof Complex is a
perfectly executed and haunting look at Germany's terrorist group, The
Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings
and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s.
*_
_***** The New York Times- "A taut, unnerving, forcefully unromantic
fictional film."
*My One and Only <
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/myoneandonly>* A
1950s-set comedy in which the glamorous Anne Deveraux (Renee Zellweger)
embarks on a drive down the Eastern Seaboard in a quixotic search for a
wealthy man to fund a new life for her and her sons. Also starring Kevin
Bacon, Chris Noth, and Nick Stahl.
***1/2 Roger Ebert- "This is essentially Renee Zellweger's picture, and
she glows in it."
*_
_**Big Fan <
http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/bigfan>* From the
creator of The Wrestler, Big Fan tells the story of Paul Aufiero (played
masterfully by Patton Oswalt), a hardcore New York Giants football fan
who struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his
favorite player.
**** Los Angeles Times- "Starring an ideally cast Patton Oswalt in the
title role, Big Fan is a poignant, dead-on character study, an
examination of a crisis in the life of the most die-hard of die-hard New
York Giants football fans."
