Please excuse the large type as I go in for cataract surgery on Tuesday the 24th @ VAMC Ja Jolla.
A year & 1/2 ago I quit my 7 year job @ Fiddlers Cove Marina of Naval Amphibious Base of Naval Base Coronado, and moved myself and my Vic 21 (#216, aka Frank Butler #66) to Yuma. I had heard numerous reports of people calling Catalina Yachts repair department, only to have Frank Butler himself, answer the phone. It's my understanding Frank aquired Wesco Marine by default in 1958, since Carpentier was unable to finish Frank's custom contracted boat, after paying in full, plus some. I'd contact Frank directly @ the info provided at the bottom of the page of the top link. Wikipedia has more Frank info if you input Catalina Yachts in the search field.
On a lesser note, I'm sorry to hear about the guy who snapped his rudder post. Since my always-trailered "free" 21 didn't come with sails, and I didn't have the $2700 to get replacements through North Sails, I simply cut down a Hobie 18 fully battened Main, and use the matching Jib "as is". Occassionally I add a 25' tall x 13' footed symetrical spinnaker; or a 29 x 27' asymetrical w/ 8' telescoping whisker, both scavanged off a Catalina 27; and haven't busted a rudder post yet. But then, I don't race, and instead use these monster sails in lighter airs, during multi-day camping, while nav'ing the snake canyons of Lake Powell.
I had a stock Wesco motor mount, but modified the mounting board to accomodate both my Vic 21's 12v 32#thrust 36"shaft Minnkota maneuver motor and it's 8' scanoe tender 1 hp, when I installed a six-fold adjustable backstay (from a Cal 20). All of the original blocks, plus those for the kites, have been replaced with NOS Phenolic blocks garnered from months of ebay shopping. With the exception of the 6:1 backstay, every part I've added is either brass or bronze, but, because of prevoius owners modifications, it's still a bastard-ized boat.
I'll try to remember to send a pic or five, next week, once I return from SanDiegoVA. I still owe Darin a Wesco nameplate pic, as well.
