Subject: SLFS List Miyazaki's PONYO, PAPER HEART
To all our Film Society members and supporters,
*
*A special thank you goes out to KUED, who collaborated with us in
presenting the film JULIE & JULIA to our members and supporters. Our
next member screening will be Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. with a
wine and cheese reception prior to the screening, so mark your calendars
and send us your ideas for films. KUED was also generous to offer
members on the list a chance at winning a special DVD collection of Jane
Austen. Congratulations goes out to Steve Watson! Welcome all our new
members. We look forward to hearing from you and providing amazing
programming for the future.

Children and films
Just a quick update on our Big Pictures Little People program as well.
This year, a record number of over 600 children between the ages of 2-12
from over seven different shelters and organizations for children
attended this years program. Designed to ensure access to artful
children's films, this program buses in children from area shelters and
programs, gives a t-shirt, film surprises, concessions and then screens
a repertory classic like Miyazaki's SPIRITED AWAY. Sponsored by the
George Q. Morris Foundation and by your generous membership contribution.

Movie writing in Utah
Utah screenwriters are now moving into writing their local and regional
movie scripts. These writers were chosen from applicants to participate
in a one-year workshop in screen writing. We look forward to working
with this talented group of writers throughout this year. Their next
workshop will be designed by Joan Tewkesbury (writer: NASHVILLE) who
will also be visiting to work with the writers on their characters. We
will keep you posted on progress.

*Opening at the theaters this week!

_Broadway

Ponyo <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0876563/>_*, Japanese master animator
Hayao Miyazaki brings us a story inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's
fairy tale "The Little Mermaid." Already a box-office success in Japan,
this story of a young and overeager goldfish named Ponyo and her quest
to become human features an outstanding roster of voice talent including
Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, and
Betty White.

*_Paper Heart <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1331064/>_*, Charlyne Yi has
her doubts about the existence of true love and embarks on a quest
across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn’t
fully understand, only to meet a boy after her own heart: Michael Cera.
Combining elements of documentary and traditional storytelling, reality
and fantasy, "Paper Heart" brings a fresh perspective to the modern
romance and redefines the classic love story.

_**Held Over!*
*_
The Cove <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/cove>_*, In this
pulse-pounding eco-thriller, a crack team of divers, activists and
special effects experts infiltrate a secret cove in Japan to expose one
of history's most shocking and unimaginable crimes against nature.
Winner of the Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival, 'The
Cove' is sure to be one of the most talked about films of the summer.
**** The New York Times- "...an exceptionally well-made documentary that
unfolds like a spy thriller, complete with bugged hotel rooms,
clandestine derring-do and mysterious men in gray flannel suits."
*_
(500) Days of Summer
<http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/500daysofsummer>_*, An offbeat
romantic comedy and Sundance hit about a woman (played perfectly by
Zooey Deschanel) who doesn't believe true love exists, and the young man
(Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her.

**** Roger Ebert- "Here is a rare movie...a delightful comedy, alive
with invention."

*_Food, Inc. <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/foodinc>_*, you'll
never look at dinner the same way again after seeing this unflattering
look inside America's corporate-controlled food industry. Featuring
interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation) and
Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) Food, Inc. reveals surprising --
and often shocking truths -- about what we eat, how it's produced, who
we have become as a nation and where we are going from here. **** Los
Angeles Times- "Essential Viewing"
*_
_The Hurt Locker <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/hurtlocker>,
*one of the most widely acclaimed films of the year, The Hurt Locker is
an intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most
dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat.
Starring Jeremy Renner, Ralph Fiennes, and Guy Pierce. Directed by
Kathryn Bigelow

**** The New York Times- "The best nondocumentary American feature made
yet about the war in Iraq."
*
Moon <http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/moon>, *Sam Rockwell
expertly plays an astronaut completing a solo, three-year mission on the
far side of the moon while barely holding on to his sanity and working
alongside only his a faithful computer (voiced by the unmistakable Kevin
Spacey) in this refreshingly intelligent psychological thriller.

*Away We Go <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1176740/>, *Sam Mendes
(/AMERICAN BEAUTY, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD/) directs this compassionate
dramedy which follows a thirtysomething couple around the country as
they search for a spot to start their family. Starring John Krasinski,
Maya Rudolph, Jeff Daniels, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Allison Janney, and
written by Dave Eggers.

_*Trainspotting <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117951/>*_, Choose life.
Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure

to do a thing like that?
