2)* **Summer's Not Over Yet! Bring Your Stuffed Friends To Hogle Zoo's Teddy
Bear*
*Picnic!*
Throughout history, no childrens' toy seems as well loved as the teddy bear.
In fact, collectors of these stuffed buddies are known as arctophiles from
the Greek words arcto (bear) and philos (lover). The famous nursery school
song goes, "Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic." Even Elvis
Presley sang, "Oh let me be your teddy bear." So in honor of these fuzzy
friends it's time for Hogle Zoo's second annual Teddy Bear Picnic event
Saturday August 8 from 10 am to 3 pm.
On this day, watch black bears play with enrichment items, get ideas to
scrapbook your family's teddy bear picnic memories at our scrapbooking
tables, and enjoy a special kid's meal with a bear cup at the Bear Grotto.
In fact, if you bring your own favorite teddy to Hogle Zoo for this fun
event, you'll get $2 off a regular child's admission ticket. Give your furry
friend a check up with our animal veterinary staff and learn all about how
the Hogle Zoo animal care staff keeps not only bears, but also other zoo
animals healthy. Community friends from Ski Utah, Stampin' Up and Roberts
Arts and Crafts will also be on hand for "beary" fun activities for families
and kids.
So take teddy out for a picnic-a Teddy Bear Picnic at Utah's Hogle Zoo-For
every bear that ever there was, will gather there for certain because
today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic! Activities are free with
regular-priced Hogle Zoo admission; $9 for adults, $7 for kids ages 3 to 12,
kids 2 and younger are free. For more information about Hogle Zoo contact
Community Relations Coordinator Holly Braithwaite at (801) 584-1729 or email
at hbraithwaite@???

3) *Utah Arts Alliance Announces an Exhibit of Fine Art: WOMEN WHO SHOOT*

Steph Park
Plus ELEMENTS, Stone and Metal Sculpture by Marv Poulson
August 4 August 29, 2009.
Opening Reception: Friday August 7th, 6 - 9 p.m.
Location: 127 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah
Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Saturday 12 ? 6
p.m.
The Utah Arts Alliance will present an exhibit of original fine art
photography, WOMEN WHO SHOOT, by four outstanding local photographers,
Zusanna Audette, Shalee Cooper, Amanda Moore and Steph Park. In addition,
the exhibit will feature “ELEMENTS”, Stone and Metal Sculpture by Marv
Poulson.
The exhibit will be on display from August 4th through August 29th, 2009.
The opening reception for the artists will be held Friday August 7th from 6
- 9 p.m., at the Utah Arts Alliance Gallery, 127 S. Main St., Salt Lake
City, Utah.
The four women in this group show represent very different styles of
photography. Each comes to her process very differently, yet all are
passionate about their work and process. Steph Parke is exploring her
memories of childhood camping adventures and the American Dream of being an
RV owner through her Polaroid Project, Camp. Shalee Cooper is focusing her
medium format Roleiflex to capture beauty in the mundane. She is focusing
on isolating texture, color, and design of everyday objects so that they
become abstractly beautiful. Zuzanna Audette is exploring the world of
feminine identity. Through her lens, she is examining relationships and
bonds between people, individual experience within physical space, the
modern roles of women, and the ideals of physical beauty. Amanda Moore is
exploring the changing roadscape of the American West, focusing on those
parts that are gradually disappearing. She is looking for the beauty of the
old highway systems of America. Each photographer is bringing her
individual vision of life in the West to the audience.

Show and Craft Market. Friday evenings beginning July 31 through August 28,

Pioneer Park. Pioneer Park Picture Show and Craft Market is made possible by
the generous support of the Utah Film Commission, Salt Lake Solutions, Utah
Office of Tourism, KSL, SLUG Magazine, B98.7 and the Jade Market.
PIONEER PARK PICTURE SHOW schedule:
August 7 - FOOTLOOSE
Celebrating its 25th Anniversary!
FOOTLOOSE, the film that shot Kevin Bacon to the stratosphere of fame,
follows Ren McCormack, (Kevin Bacon) a decidedly urban teen who's
transplanted to a small Midwestern town where dancing is outlawed.
Recruiting his best pal, the quiet Willard (Chris Penn), and his girlfriend
(Lori Singer), a clergyman's daughter, Ren starts a revolution by moving to
the beat. Filmed at the Lehi Roller Mills, where to this day, according to
the current owner of the mill Sherman Robinson, visitors want to have their
picture taken on the porch where Ren packaged flour.
Come early for a special FOOTLOOSE Fabulous Fancy Footwear Contest, hosted
by KSL radio’s Amanda Dickson and Chris Redgrave and sponsored by Utah
Office of Tourism, Utah Film Commission, KSL, Lehi Roller Mills, and Tuacahn
Amphitheater.
The opening credits of FOOTLOOSE features a parade of fancy footwear and
footwork that inspired a generation to embrace shoes as a from of rebellion
and self expression. Wear your most fabulous, eye catching, glamorous, punk
rock, current or retro shoes and compete in the Fabulous Fancy Footwear
Contest. The winner of the contest will receive four tickets to "Footloose:
The Musical" at the Tuacahn Amphitheater, an overnight stay in St. George.
Contest begins at approximately 8:30 p.m.
August 14 - THE SEARCHERS
Declared by the American Film Institute as the best Western ever made, THE
SEARCHERS follows the story of Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) embarking on a
five-year journey to find his kidnapped niece. Directed by John Ford, this
film shows the vastness and beauty of Monument Valley, making this landscape
an iconic image of the west.
August 21 - 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
Stanley Kubrick's quiet masterpiece probes the mysteries of space and human
destiny. The classic opening scene - which some hail as the greatest opening
scene ever - was shot in Monument Valley, Utah.
August 28 - AUDIENCE CHOICE
Vote for your favorite film shot in Utah. Ballots will be collected at the
first three Pioneer Park Screenings along with online votes and write in
requests. Films are subject to availability and due to the public screening
guidelines, films need to be rated G, PG or PG-13. Films included on the
short list are, GALAXY QUEST, THE SANDLOT, JEREMIAH JOHNSON, and WORLDS
FASTEST INDIAN. You can vote online at HYPERLINK "

Kirby Heyborne is a rare performer who brings an honest palpable
vulnerability to his Folk Rock/Pop music. His warm voice and intricate
guitar color his well received albums “Inside” and “Braver Days.” His
intimate work on his Christmas album,“Merry White Tree in the Night,” has
garnered the highest praise from critics and fans alike.
The seeds for Kirby’s ability to blend catchy hooks with heartfelt melodies
and lyrics were planted when he began to teach himself guitar at the age of
15. “I learned to play guitar from a Best of The Beatles Songbook,” Heyborne
remembers. “I was heavy into the contemporary folk scene following
storytelling masters like David Wilcox and John Gorka. And at the same time
I was learning to play hook-heavy Beatles tunes.” “By the end of my 9th
grade year, I was performing my original songs (along with plenty of Beatles
covers) to groups of 40 to 50 people in my friend’s backyard. This became a
frequent event for the rest of my high school experience.”
Heyborne recorded 3 albums during his high school years and continued to
build a strong following. After graduating, he formed Bentleigh, an acoustic
rock band. Helming the group, Heyborne brought Bentleigh to the forefront of
the Intermountain music scene. During the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter
Games, Bentleigh performed at many events, private parties, and opened for
N’SYNC at the Olympic Medals Plaza. Kirby has released four successful solo
albums, performed across the country, and had
songs featured in four films.
The release of his fourth album, “The Elm Tree,” March 31, 2009, is his
“most compelling and best yet”, says producer Nathan DeVore. “His music is
very Simon and Garfunkel-ie”. Heyborne, now solo, is currently touring the
country and enchanting audiences with his storytelling and intimate songs.
He resides with his wife and 3 children in Los Angeles.
Sponsored by the Utah Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and

13) *Art Access Celebrates 15th Year of Partners Mentoring Program with
Annual Exhibit*
Art Access Gallery is pleased to present its 15th Annual Partners Exhibit
featuring six emerging adult artists with their professional seven artist
mentors. The exhibit, showing the work of all eleven artists, will open on
Friday, August 21 with an artists’ reception from 6 to 9 PM, during Salt
Lake City’s monthly Gallery Stroll. The show will hang from August 21
through September 11.
Participating this year are emerging artists: Heidi Evans, Abbas Mathlum,
Ali Spittler, Fariba Navid, and Andrew & Chaulle Italasamo. Their mentors,
respectively, are: Andrea Stavrakakis, Brad Slaugh, Erica Houston, Connie
Borup and S. Matthew Jones. Each partnership developed individual goals,
which were then worked on, usually in the professional artists’ studios.
The Partners Program was established in 1994, when Art Access realized that
many talented adult artists with disabilities or artists who represented
other underserved communities, were falling between the cracks of its
offerings. A wide variety of programs had been developed, but none addressed
the specific needs of adult artists who needed assistance in developing
technique, learning the intricacies of professionalism or in making
connections to the arts community.
Since then, Partners has served over 200 emerging artists. Lives have been
continually and positively transformed since the genesis of this program.
Emerging artists have been juried into prestigious shows, sold their art,
conducted art workshops and become mentors themselves.
This year, the Partners Program includes a husband and wife team with
disabilities who are learning the complexities of origami from award winning
origami artists S. Matthew Jones, as well as one artist each from Iran and
Iraq, who are working respectively with Connie Borup and Brad Slaugh.
Over the years, mentors have included talented and community minded
professional Utah artists such as Lenka Konopasek, V. Kim Martinez, Bonnie
Sucec, Lee Deffebach, William Littig, Holly (Olivia) Mae Pendergast, Sandra
Brunvand, Stefanie Dykes, Sam Wilson, Ben Behunin, Bonnie Posselli and John
Erickson, as well as many others.
Art Access Gallery is located at 230 South 500 West #125 in Salt Lake City.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10AM to 6PM.

Art Access II Gallery is pleased to host the 12th annual Teen Workshop
Exhibition, featuring the work of 50 teens with and without disabilities,
who participated in this year’s workshop program.
The exhibit will hang from August 21 through September 11, with an Artists’
Reception on Friday, August 21 from 6 to 9 PM during the Salt Lake City’s
monthly Gallery Stroll.
The free Art Access Teen Workshops are open to teens, from 13 to 19 years of
age, who have a strong interest in the visual arts. Limited to 13 teens
each, the 12-hour workshops are held at Art Access and taught by artists
whose work is currently or has been exhibited in the gallery. Small
workshops allow for more individual attention from the artists, as well as
for teens from diverse backgrounds, to get to know each other and come to
appreciate and understand each other’s differences.
Professional artists, who taught this year, are: Blake & Cat Palmer (Painted
Photography), Cassandra Christensen Barney (Wishes, Dreams & Gratitude),
Trent Alvey (The Power of Art to Create Social Change), Erica Houston & Blue
Critchfield (Box Yourself), and Emmanuel Makonga (Cartooning with a
Purpose). Work from all five workshops will be displayed in the exhibition.
Jean LaSarre Gardner is Workshop Coordinator.
Art Access II Galleries are located at 230 South 500 West #125 in Salt Lake
City. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

This Is No Time To Treat The Arts As An
Extravagance<
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/issues_ideas/v-fullstory/story/1156977.html>
[T]he arts teach us morality, humanity, the range of identity, the
importance of beauty and ideas and qualities you can't quantify, the values
we hold in common. ... They teach us all this through miraculously
pleasurable experiences that at their best are akin to spiritual revelation,
and that even in their lesser occurrences are a source of delight and
understanding. Why does that constantly have to be defended as worthwhile?
