Attention all FIDOS,
Thanks to everyone who has helped by sending comments and signing new
members up on the email list. We want to give you a quick update on what is
happening with the “off leash” designation for Parleys (Tanner) Park.
:: Current Status - Holding Pattern ::
The management plan for the park is moving slowly through the Salt Lake City
process, partly because of the nature of these processes and partly because
of some delays relating to city/consultant personnel. But here is what we
know now. The plan so far has been posted on the city website and you can
view it at the following address:
http://www.slcgov.com/publicservices/parks/Parleys/parleysnaturepark.htm
Read the plan over and be sure to look at the Comprehensive Use Plan and
Comprehensive Use Exhibits. The city has determined that this plan will
serve as the template for future park plans and open space management for
all of these areas. This is also contributing to the slow pace of the
plan.
:: What We Know For Sure - Not Much ::
At this point, FIDOS has not heard of any meeting date for the next
stakeholder group where a determination will be made of the preferred
alternative. We have also been unable to determine how, or by whom, the
plan will be adopted. As a general rule, these types of plans are adopted
by the mayor’s office and then are considered by the City Council at funding
time. However, there is discussion about how this particular plan should be
handled in light of the fact that it is to serve as a template for the
entire city.
This plan will be opened for official public comment as soon as the
preferred alternative is determined.
:: What You Can Do - Stay Informed, Be Polite, and Maintain Constructive
Dialogue with Your Mayor and City Council ::
We will keep you informed as the process kicks back into gear. If you
choose to send comments to the mayor or council, please remember that
constructive comments are the most helpful. We understand that many of you
are unhappy with the plans for the bicycle trail and the way this plan is
progressing but remember that sending offensive and nasty comments does more
harm than good.
:: Changes Ahead ::
There will be changes for this park, but we are hopeful that the “off leash”
user group is listened to as the great group of people we are.
Thanks a lot.
