Demolition is Forever

Preservation Creates Lasting Legacies

new-library Over the past 20 years, we have witnessed and celebrated the
preservation of many significant Utah landmarks: The State Capitol, Salt
Lake City & County Building, Utah Governor's Mansion, the Union Pacific
Depot in Salt Lake City and Union Station in Ogden. But historic
preservation is not just about the monumental buildings. It's also about
your historic neighborhood schools, community libraries, churches, local
businesses, restaurants, and homes.

YOU provide the support that enables Utah Heritage Foundation to save
buildings and educate the public, including Utah's schoolchildren, on the
value of maintaining the continuity of past, present and future in our built
environment. With one of the nation's fastest growing populations, the
impulse can be to demolish or abandon old structures. Utah Heritage
Foundation promotes thoughtful rehabilitation and re-use. Historic
preservation conserves materials and energy, creates affordable residential
and commercial space, and generates jobs in retrofitting existing buildings.
It provides a more livable environment for our future generations and
attracts tourists.

rich and sustainable future!

Ephraim City and its library board, which led to the rehabilitation of the
town's 1914 Carnegie Library. The project was awarded a 2009 Heritage
Award.

Left: As Trolley Square's owners embarked on an expansion plan that
included over 100,000 square feet of new retail space and increased parking
facilities, Utah Heritage Foundation advocated for the sensitive
rehabilitation of Salt Lake City's former trolley barns in the heart of the
Central City Historic District.

What We're Working On

UHF LAUNCHES SALT LAKE MODERN

The first meeting of Salt Lake Modern was held yesterday at the Home of
Lewis Francis and Dana Costello - a 1956 home designed by Utah Architect,
Stephen Macdonald.

Salt Lake Modern is a group dedicated to preserving, protecting, and
promoting the Salt Lake region's mid-century modern homes and commercial
buildings. As a part of Utah Heritage Foundation, SL Mod functions as a
committee to promote awareness of such works, document the architects who
created them, and showcase the functional design philosophy behind them.

Influenced by these early masters, Utah's modernist movement included a
wide array of talent in residential, commercial, and public design. Utah
features excellent examples of all Modern architectural styles - from the
International style First Security Bank Building (1955; 400 S and Main St.,
SLC) to the Googie Iceberg Drive-In (1960; 3900 South and 900 East, SLC),
and the Prairie style Stromquist House (1959; 1289 E. Canyon Creek Road,
Bountiful), to the New Formalist former SLC Public Library Building (1964;
209 East 500 South).
