Attention FIDOS members:
Here is an important issue that everyone who uses Millcreek Canyon (or
anyone who wants to use ANY canyon) should be aware of. The 1989 Wasatch
Canyons master plan is being updated and the workshops are scheduled for
this week. Check out the workshop schedule at
http://www.wasatchcanyons.slco.org/html/upcomingWorkshops.html and make it a
priority to attend one of them. Please RSVP for these workshops.
As water resources become more and more scarce, protection of water quality
becomes more and more important. But it seems that in Salt Lake County dogs
"off leash" are the easiest target to restrict. Is this restriction really
scientifically the most important? What about wildlife, septic systems, ski
resorts, fertililzers, etc. Do dogs really impact waterways to a level
where they should be banned everywhere? Since we treat all water before it
is sent to the public for use, what is the real purpose of banning dogs from
watershed areas? How are recreational needs for the "off leash" user group
balanced against the needs of all the other user groups?
This plan will guide land use policy for many years, your voice needs to be
heard. We have one canyon left and only available for half the time. This
is crucial.
The Salt Lake Tribune recently published an article about this issue posing
the question "Should restrictions on dogs be loosened or tightened?". The
article is available at
