*Who can participate?*
University of Utah students, faculty, and staff and also any
non-university affiliated residents of Salt Lake City. There is no
charge for the public, thanks to primary event sponsorship by Salt Lake
City's Division of Sustainability and the Environment
<
http://www.slcgreen.com> and a supplemental grant from the Recycling
Coalition of Utah <
https://utahrecycles.org/>.
*Why participate? *
America's growing use of electronics has created a new environmental
challenge: electronic waste (e-waste) or electronic scrap (e-scrap).
Discarded electronics are the fastest growing waste stream in the U.S.
By 2010 over 3 billion electronics will be scrapped or an average of
about 400 million units a year.
Electronic equipment contains toxic compounds that can leach into the
soil and water supplies and contaminate our air if electronics are sent
to landfills or incinerated.
Currently, less than 25% of obsolete electronics are being recycled, and
the majority of the electronics collected for recycling or re-use are
exported to developing countries with no worker safety or environmental
programs in place.
Outdated or obsolete electronic equipment isn't usually accepted by
thrift stores or other charities, and so responsible disposal and
reclamation of all reusable components is the best solution.
*What can be dropped off at the collection event?*
. Televisions (full digital TV conversion will be effective June 12 -
time to get rid of that old set!)
. Computer Monitors of all kinds,
. Computers and Computer Peripherals,
. Audio/Stereo Equipment,
. VCRs,
. DVD players,
. Video Cameras,
. Telephones,
. Fax and Copying Machines,
. Cellular Phones,
. Wireless Devices, and
. Video Game Consoles.
*What will happen to the items collected?*
All of the e-waste that is collected at the event will be dismantled and
recycled responsibly by Guaranteed Recycling Xperts
<
http://www.grxrecycles.com/> (GRX) of Utah. GRX is recognized by the
Basel Action Network <
http://www.ban.org/> (BAN) as an E-steward and was
awarded the e-waste recycling contract for the State of Utah.
*What about data privacy?*
If you are dropping off items with personal files or information on
them, we highly recommend you scrub all personal data first. All hard
drives and memory will be shredded by the recycler to physically destroy
any remaining data.
*Event Sponsors:*
The University of Utah Office of Sustainability, Environmental Health
and Safety Office, and Office of information Technology; Salt Lake City
Corporation <
http://www.slcgreen.com/>; the Salt Lake Valley Health
Department <
http://www.slvhealth.org/>; the Utah Department of
Environmental Quality <
http://www.deq.utah.gov/>; and the Recycling
Coalition of Utah <
https://utahrecycles.org/>.
*If I can't make it to this event, what other options do I have?*
If you are a resident of Salt Lake County, you can now take your
unwanted electronic gear to the Salt Lake County landfill
<
http://www.slvlandfill.slco.org/> hazardous materials drop-off station.
There is no charge for this service, and all items will be recycled by GRX.
There will also be several more one-day collection events around the
Salt Lake Valley in 2009. Check the landfill website and local
newspapers for updated information.
