Alexey Semyonov, Vice-President and Director, Andrei Sakharov Foundation

Alexey Semyonov is the Vice-President and Director of the Andrei Sakharov
Foundation. Sakharov was an important dissident, writer, and scientist
during the Soviet regime, and the father of Alexey Semyonov. He was an
eminent nuclear physicist, human rights activist, and won the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1975. In 1988 he was awarded the International Humanist Award. The
Sakharov Prize, established in 1988, is awarded annually by the European
Parliament to people and organizations dedicated to human rights. The Andrei
Sakharov prize is awarded each year by the American Physical Society to
recognize scientists who give leadership in ³upholding human rights.² The
Andrei Sakharov prize for Writer¹s Civic Courage was established in 1990.
