Elvin,

Hull #185 was built in 1962 according to the CA DMV.

With the current email distributions concerning Victory 21 repairs, I went back and "googled" Frank Butler & Victory 21 in general. Your history of the Victory Fleet says Frank aquired Wesco Marine in 1964, but the attached document from Mission Bay Yacht Club says 1962. The California DMV title to my Victory 21 #216 (CF 3397 CB) states it was manufactured in 1962. So, who's got the typo here?

Jeff-
When does CA DMV place #185's date of manufacture?

Thanks.
Elvin

Hi Conrad and Kristine,

My boat, Victory 21 #185 is in fact from Fresno. I believe it was owned by the Andersons and was raced there. It seems to be set up for racing, having two winches forward and a traveler aft. Overall the boat seems to be in pretty good shape and can probably be sailed as-is but I enjoy restoration projects and have some time in the next few months so my plan is to strip and paint it, replace the bulkhead and bilge covers, new sheets and whatever else is needed. Sails need a few repairs but should be OK. Depending on how bad the plywood keel support is rotted I may be able to reinforce it like you said and just replace the bolts and not drop the keel. I'm located just down the road in Bakersfield and plan on doing some sailing at Hunington and maybe Millerton in the future.

Gentlemen, Welcome aboard to a great experience of restoration and sailing!
If you are a shade tree mechanic / carpenter, have general knowledge of tools and can read instruction off a can you can do it all.
My wife skippers and I crew aboard " Wind Wolf " our newly restored Victory 21, blue hull and all, Fresno Yacht Club.

She sat in a barn in Clovis CA for eight years, she had rust at keel inside and out with stress cracks at the exterior bottom of the boat.
Mechanically she needed new barrier coat and bottom resurfacing. All sheets were worn as well as all sails and winches.
The trailer needed new tires and paint job.
I paced myself, gutted the boat and reienforced interior areas with fiberglass, rebuilt the centerboard removing water rot wood and injecting resin for structural support.
You will note fiberglass areas needing a little TLC are where people step onto the boat or where you stand when racing putting the wisker pole at mast.
I figured since I had it gutted why not, fiberglass will weaken over the years and a little cloth and resin is easier then you think. West Marine has it all and is a good source with a built in system.
Frozen keel bolts are common and if you turn them the bolt will turn. Liquid wrench type release will not guarantee nut removal, the next step is to support the keel from the bottom.
Get a nut cracker / splitter that splits the nut into so you can remove them, replace nuts with new. At that point you will see the degree of damage at plywood. You may find it not as bad as you think, there are alot of products you can inject with syringe into the area for reinforcement.
Because our fleet race both Pacific Ocean and High Sierra Races, we all have eye hooks mounted at the aft two bolts that are most visable. This eye hook allows the Victory's to be hoisted for repair or craned into water. Feel free to email me as per your restoration venture.
Jeff we had nine Victory's racing in this years High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake nestled 7500 feet east of Fresno, CA.
Two defending National Champion skippers and crewman. The rest of the field battle the best for a great two days of sailing.............. A must experience venue and race.
This regatta is 55 years old, with two weekends of racing and more then 400 sailing boats, please go onto our web page as per Fresno Yacht Club.
To see all these Victories at horn is inspirational................... I invite you bring your boat next year if anything come and learn more we are one family!

Hi Dan,

I recently purchased a Victory 21 and my plan is to restore it. The first thing I need to do is replace the keel bolts and plywood support. Just wondering if this is a tougher job than I anticipate. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'm in CA.

Thanks,

Jason,

Where are you located? I have a Victory that needs keel work that might provide a source for spare parts. It is located in MD.

Subject: rotten rudder?

Hey,

Thanks for running the website. I have a problem with my Victory and need someone that knows it well to give me a couple pointers. The rudder is loose on the post that runs up into the cockpit. The fiberglass cover has been compromised allowing the wood core (It looks like wood) to rot. I was hoping tha t I could find someone that I could either buy a new one from, or fix it in a way that the rudder won’t fall off when I put it back into the water.

If you know anybody that I could talk to, it would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jesse inkpen
