No offense intended Eileene, I just thought i remembered the
chemistry (from !ACK! 30 years ago...) and checked it using
wikipedia. The info was so good there I thought I'd share the link.
I'm pretty new in soap making as well (about 1-1/2 years) so I'm no
expert. And as I've metioned to the list before, I've experienced
using the wrong material first hand and can attest to the fact that
it is critical to use 100% lye. Some cans look VERY similar to the
real stuff but have other materials in them which can be quite
hazardous. ALWAYS use rubber gloves
Best luck to you. This list is a great place and I've learned a ton
from all the people here.
The more we share the better for all of us ('cept maybe those who are
already experts and have to put up with my dumb questions...lol!)
BTW, along with other resources, Wikipedia's entry on soap (enter
"Soap" in their search window) has some good info worth reading. Not
so much recipes, but background info...
