The first thing that comes to mind is how much are you superfatting? The
soap itself doesn't spoil, but the oils will, especially if they have a
short shelf life, like wheat germ or hemp.
As to the environment, someone told me once that the soap pot is sterile by
nature, due to the high alkaline environment. It kills any bacteria that
might be hanging around. I don't know if it's totally true, but I'm sure
there's some truth to it. Good cleanliness is always a plus, I have a
separate soaping area - in the garage, next to the laundry room sink - I
don't really want the lye in the house.
