James Thomas is one of the better accounts of Colter.
Thomas was there shortly after in time. I have never seen
anything to make me think that Colter used a horse. I also
doubt you will find a good description of what the "pack"
refers too.
Those kinds of details are rare and when they do come along
they still create as many questions as answers.
