Subject: Re: MtMan-List: Charlton Heston
A decent actor whose career will, in all probability, be reduced to two
sound bites: (1) Planet of the Apes "Get your stinking paws of of me, you
damn dirty apes!" and (2) his NRA tagline "They can have my guns when they
pry them from my cold, dead, fingers." The man's career had a great variety
including, as germane to this list, "The Mountain Men" and the original
"Planet of the Apes" (and sequels) along with "Ben-Hur" and "The Omega Man"
(not the most accurate/faithful adaptation of the novel "I Am Legend", I
preferred Vincent Price in "The Last Man on Earth", haven't seen the new
Will Smith vehicle yet). I suppose that his passing marks the end of an
age. I prefer to see him in a Valhalla-esque afterlife somewhere (am unsure
of his actual religious opinions), fitting to a number of the characters he
portrayed.

"Who does not see that the same authority which can establish Christianity
in exclusion of all other religions may establish, with the same ease, any
particular sect of Christians in exclusion of all other sects?" -- James
Madison, June 20, 1785

"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense,
founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of
enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Musselmen; and, as the
said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any
Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising
from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony
existing between the two countries." -- Article 11 of the Treaty of Peace
and Friendship between the United States and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli
of Barbary, 3 Junad 1211 (Muslim calendar), 4 November 1796 C.E..
