1) *Babcock Performing Readers Presents April 10, 2008 "University Wits"*

Directed by Dr. Ron Frederickson

"University Wits," by Jack Raymond is a brilliant mental romp of a play that
dares to imagine the very first meeting of a 25 year-old Will Shakespeare
barely arrived in London, with eight ego-centered, wary, awestruck, often
envious contemporaries of razor-sharp wit, including the likes of
Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Kyd, and Robert Greene. Don't miss the verbal
fireworks at the Dying Swan Tavern in 1589.

2)* **Call It Business or Pleasure*

Learn the basics of type and typesetting while simultaneously considering
how an individual is represented by their business or calling card.
Exercises and critiques allow participants to become familiar with
considerations concerning type and layout, and how design choices affect
communication of intent. Using handset metal type and elements,
letterpress-print a unique design that voices who, what, and how to contact
with style and verve. Leave with 200 letterpress printed business cards.

Carol Sogard received her BA in Studio Art from Michigan State University in
1992 and her MFA in Graphic Design from the University of Utah in 1997. For
over 15 years she has worked as a graphic designer and currently serves as
Associate Professor of Design at the University of Utah.

Marnie Powers-Torrey holds an MFA in photography and is the Book Arts Studio
Manager. She has taught classes in photography and etching for the
Department of Art and Art History at the University of Utah. Marnie teaches
letterpress printing, artists' books, photopolymer plate printing,
alternative printing techniques, and other courses for the Book Arts
Program. She prints limited-edition books for the Red Butte

Press and commissioned letterpress projects. Her work is exhibited
nationally.

Since 1995, the Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library has
encouraged appreciation for the art and history of the book by offering
classes, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and K-12 programming to the
communities it serves. The program rests firmly upon the Marriott Library's
rare books collection, numbering over sixty thousand books.

4) *The Utah symphony Presents Magic Circle Mime Company's "The Listener"*

This acclaimed family attraction presents an entirely new way to experience
the orchestra

David Cho and the Utah Symphony will collaborate with the Magic Circle Mime
Company to present "The Listener." Created for children ages 5 and up, the
performance will feature two zany characters teaching the audience the "art
of listening." The performance will be held at Abravanel Hall on Saturday,
March 29, 2008 at 11:00 am.

As David Cho conducts a concert featuring pieces by Britten, Bernstein,
Shostakovich, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Williams and Bizet he becomes interrupted
by two overtly enthusiastic spectators who are eager to be part of the
performance. A bugle playing mime who wants to sing opera and a tap dancing
ballerina are just part of the conductor's comic dilemma as these characters
teach the children how to be good listeners.

MAGIC CIRCLE MIME Co. is regarded as one of today's premier family
attractions. Their highly acclaimed performances, which unite the concert
orchestra with visual theater, are consistently praised for imaginative and
innovative content. MAGIC CIRCLE MIME Co. performs with virtually every
major orchestra in North America; and on more than half a dozen occasions at
The Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts with the National Symphony
Orchestra. MAGIC CIRCLE MIME COMPANY is the creative partnership of Maggie
Petersen and Douglas MacIntyre. Both artists have backgrounds in theatre
and instrumental music, and have utilized that training to create their
highly regarded programs.

Patrons are invited to come early or stay late to participate in the
Instrument Petting Zoo in the lobby of Abravanel Hall (doors will open at
9:30 am). With instruments provided by Summerhays Music, children and adults
are welcome to play different instruments such as winds, brass, strings,
percussion and piano. Summerhays staff and Youth Guild volunteers will be on
hand to assist with the activities.

Tickets for evening performances are $5 for children and $10 for
adults. Tickets
can be purchased by calling (801) 355-ARTS (355-2787), 1-888-451-2787, in
person at the Abravanel Hall box office, or by visiting www.utahsymphony.org
. Subscribers and those desiring group or student discounts should call

News release

for those to follow.

Bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny,
"Assassins" is perhaps the most controversial musical ever written. This
most American of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who
assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in
a one-act historical musical that explores the dark side of the American
experience. From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Stephen

Sondheim and John Weidman bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a
nightmarish rollercoaster ride in which assassins and would-be assassins
from different historical periods meet, interact and in an intense final
scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the name of the American
Dream.

organizations, public radio and television stations, educational
institutions, local and state government agencies, ad hoc groups, and others
collaborate with UHC. While UHC seeks to serve the entire state, we
occasionally undertake special initiatives that focus on selected topics,
targeted audiences, or geographic locations.

Lord of the Rings - Closing As A
Flop?<http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/theatre/2008/03/in_the_theatre_size_isnt_every.html>

Lord of the Rings is closing in London. It's considered one of the most
expensive failures in London theatre history. "This could spell the end of
the age of the musical behemoth. Theatre audiences can be equally content
with the more modest virtues of good stories that are well told."

The Media Generation <http://www.newsweek.com/id/123484>

The millennials--the cohort born after 1982--might be caled the Look at Me
Generation. Thanks to 'The Real World,' 'Laguna Beach' and the like, they've
been documented like no group before them, most especially by themselves: on
their blogs, their MySpace, Facebook and Flickr pages, and on YouTube. And
now the artistes are taking their turn, with a new wave of reality series,
films and books examining the documentation generation.

Cultural Institutions Feeling The Mortgage Crisis
Squeeze<http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/arts/la-et-crunch21mar21,1,4677490.story?track=rss>

Some of Southern California's major cultural institutions are bleeding
because of the sub-prime mortgage crisis, with combined losses of more than
$3 million -- and mounting -- since February, when their seemingly safe and
innocuous construction bonds turned into fiscal leeches.
