Subject: Re: MtMan-List: Tomahawk
You might watch the Contemporary Longrifle site ( http://www.longrifle.ws/
) as nice ones occasionally do turn up there... you'll want to avoid
the plethora of 18th century bag axes if you want something proper for
the fur trade... for fur trade era you'll want something with a
straight handle, possible "Kentucky pattern" with ears and an overall
square shape. I've seen nice cast ones that have been reforged to
proper profiles and fitted with straight hickory handles... so called
tomahawks are a slippery path for many and I personally have several
that are perfect for F&I war or longhunter period events but
completely wrong for the western fur trade... you should also avoid
western pipe axes intended for the indian trade too but these are just
my opinion and based upon how authentic you wish to be... there's a
tendency to over ornament ourselves and then attempt to convince
others that it was all possible... My two cents worth.
