Subject: MtMan-List: Arizona trail

We had a ball.? Weather was perfect, was a little rainy and snow but that was great for us fat girls and our horses.? We rode from the Mexican border to Oracle.? We could have made it farther (the horses were doing well) but there was so much fencing it made a 20 mile ride last forever.? We were not allowed to cut the fences to put in Texas gates because the land owners would not appreciate that so we would have to go around.? The Arizona trail book and maps did not make that very clear.
? The elevation ranged from about 4000 feet to 9466 feet, the tallest peak that we were able to climb.? In some ways the show horse out performed the Mustang.? The?Paso was able to pass through culverts (went under the major roads), find the trail (most of the time impossible to see in day light), and ride over cattle guards.? These thing are not natural to the Mustang but he would follow the Paso.? The Mustang lost a lot of weight, we had to eventually buy him grain so he did not go home to Toledo too thin to cope with the cold.? The Paso took a beating at first,?some ankle swelling, but at the end was able to cover ground at a very good rate.
? We are so motivated that we want to do another one in the fall.? We want to see about a trek through the Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness.
?PS Every piece?of battery operated?equipment failed. GPS, digital compass,?phones, and camera.? I am sure that this is a no-du for you guys.? Even the?Easy boots that I purchased for?my horses?feet?(about $250) fell apart after?three rides!? Maps, horse and compass with oil (that we had to heat up) were all that was usable in the end.? Our clothes held up because they were made out of natural materials, nylon would not have lasted through a mile of butt sliding down the side of a mountain.? We relearned that you don't?use period stuff for the look, use it because because it works.?
