Raymond Kane, a master slack key guitar player known for his distinctive
technique, died yesterday at his home in Nanakuli.
He was 82.
A lifelong musician, Kane also was a skilled fisherman and swimmer who
became a hero at the age of 14 rescuing survivors when a plane crashed off
Nanakuli.
Kane persuaded his first slack key teacher to give him lessons by catching
the man's favorite fish. Kane became one of the most influential slack key
guitarists of the 20th century.
He recorded his first album, "Nanakuli's Raymond Kane," in 1961, and
recorded two highly acclaimed albums for George Winston's Hawaiian Slack Key
Guitar Masters series that were released in the 1990s.
Kane is survived by his wife, Elodia, two sons, Dennis and Michael, three
daughters, Joann Kailiwai, Raynette Moana Arakaki, and Faith Kane and "about
28 grandchildren," said his wife, and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are pending.
