Preservation's Lead Story:
10BLAIR-KAMIN_1c_5p_TEMPO
Utah Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce that Blair Kamin will be the
Opening Plenary speaker at the 2008 Utah Preservation Conference on April
17, 2008. The event is FREE to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. at
the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, John and Marcia Price Building at the
University of Utah with remarks by Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.
Blair has been a critic with the Chicago Tribune for over 16 years were he
writes about the full range of the built environment--from highways to
high-rises, parks to public housing, continuing a tradition of accessible
but authoritative criticism. A graduate of Amherst College and the Yale
School of Architecture, Kamin also serves as a contributing editor of
Architectural Record magazine and was part of a team of editors, writers,
photographers and critics for that magazine which in 2003 won the National
Magazine Award for General Excellence.
Kamin has lectured widely and has discussed architecture on programs ranging
from ABC's "Nightline" to NPR's "All Things Considered." Kamin is the
recipient of more than 25 awards, including the Pulitzer, which he received
in 1999 for a body of work highlighted by a series of articles about the
problems and promise of Chicago's greatest public space, its lakefront.
Among his other honors are the George Polk Award for Criticism (1996), the
American Institute of Architects' Institute Honor for Collaborative
Achievement (1999) and the AIA's Presidential Citation, conferred in 2004 in
appreciation of the "rhapsodies and scoldings" that have brought
architecture to the attention of Chicago's public.

Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is providing the opportunity for interested
public agencies, non-profits, or individuals to relocate a historic (circa
1908) home owned by UTA, located at 1095 West 7800 South, West Jordan, Utah
(see photo). There will be no charge for the building; in addition, UTA will
pay the party relocating the building a portion of the amount that is
budgeted for demolition and clearing of the building as an incentive to
relocate the building. UTA will not be responsible for the costs associated
with moving the building or for purchasing the land onto which the structure
will be moved. Relocation plans and any modifications associated with this
project will be subject to conformance with concepts outlined in Moving
Historic Buildings (John Obed Curtis, National Park Service, 1979) and the
Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic
Properties (36 CFR Part 68). Plans for relocation must be reviewed by a
preservation consultant who meets the Secretary of the Interior's
Professional Qualification Standards in architectural history or historic
architecture (36 CFR Part 61), and the Utah State Historic Preservation
Officer. The individual or entity whose relocation proposal is selected by
UTA will be required to enter into a contract with UTA outlining the terms
and conditions under which the home will be relocated. The offer for
relocation will extend until March 6, 2008. If no acceptable offers are
received by this date, the building will be demolished.
