1) *Menopause The Musical*

Celebrates International Success

January 30 - February 24, 2008

Jeanne Wagner Theatre

Forty-two cities and seven countries after the first show, Menopause The
Musical, the hilarious celebration of women and The Change premieres in Salt
Lake City, January 30-February 24. Tickets at 355-ARTS, ArtTix.org and
ArtTix outlets. Groups (15+) call Sandy at (801) 355-5502 for a discount.

It all started in a tiny 76-seat perfume-shop-turned-theatre in Orlando,
Florida, on March 28, 2001. Four women at a Bloomingdale's lingerie sale
with nothing in common but a black lace bra and hot flashes, night sweats,
memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex, too much sex, and more. A
joyful parody of 25 re-lyricized classic baby boomer hits, the 90-minute
show features chart-toppers including "I Heard It Thru the Grapevine You No
Longer See 39" and the disco favorite "Stayin' Awake! Stayin' Awake!"

Inspired by a hot flash and a bottle of wine, writer/producer Jeanie Linders
created the show as a celebration of women who are on the brink of, in the
middle of, or have survived The Change. Since its first performance, the
show has evolved as a "grassroots" movement of women who deal with life
after 40 and all the challenges that result in the mental, physical and
spiritual freedom of the post-WWII baby boomer generation. "Most women know
intuitively that every other woman is experiencing hot flashes or night
sweats. There is always a close friend or two who can sympathize or identify
with her," says Linders. "But when they are sitting in a theatre full of
other women, all laughing and shouting, 'That's me! That's me on stage!'
they know what they are experiencing is normal. They aren't alone.or crazy.
It becomes a sisterhood."

Get tickets at 355-ARTS, ArtTix.org and ArtTix outlet. Groups (15+) call
Sandy at (801) 355-5502 for a discount. Tickets prices are $38.50 & $45
plus service fee. ShowTimes are 7:30 pm Tuesday through Thursday, Friday and
Saturday at 8:00 pm; Sunday at 7:00pm. Matinees at 2:00pm Saturdays and
Sundays plus Friday, February 1 and Friday, February 29. No performance
Sunday, Februay 3 at 2:00pm. Presented by NewSpace Entertainment.

2)* Ririe-Woodbury Brings "Waddle Birds" and "Outer Space Clowns" to the
Stage*

NIKOLAIS IS BACK at the Capitol Theatre

Ririe-Woodbury presents The Crystal and the Sphere, the Company's latest
acquisition by dance/theatre wizard Alwin Nikolais.

The Crystal and the Sphere is a delightful, black light, multi-media collage
involving an array of strange and humorous characters all woven into a
fantasy against vibrant light projections. The Crystal and the Sphere is a
fantasmagorical show stopper! Alwin Nikolais always said, "When audiences
come to the theatre they come to see theatrical magic, not dramatic or
political problems, but magic." And in this show, he does just that.

With such delightful titles as "Waddle Birds," "Outer Space Clown," and
"Chess Skaters," this performance will fire the imagination of an audience
of all ages! Ririe-Woodbury's historic partnership with the Nikolais/Louis
Foundation for Dance, Inc. is garnering rave reviews throughout the USA and
Europe. The New York Times numbered Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company's
performance of Nikolais' works as one of the 10 best events of the year.

6) *"The Way I'm Supposed To Be": Body Adornment, Modification & Cultural
Expression*

Panel Discussion at Utah Cultural Celebration Center

WHAT: Engaging panel discussion on the cultural and historical
significance of body adorment & modification at the Utah Cultural
Celebration Center. The discussion is tied to the Cultural Center's current
gallery exhibit, Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats.

WHEN: Thursday, February 7 @ 7:00 ?C 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Utah Cultural Celebration Center

1355 West 3100 South

WHO: Everyone is welcome to attend the panel discussion, and
view the Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats photography exhibit
free of charge during regular hours of operation.

WHY: The Crowns exhibit reveals the great historical and
cultural traditions within the Black female church-going community. Women
wearing hats as body adornment speaks volumes about both personal and group
values & beliefs learned within this community. Although more permanent
than wearing hats, the same can be said about those who chose to modify
their bodies through tattooing, piercing and other permanent forms. Linking
these two examples, Folklorist Michael Christensen will present and moderate
a discussion on the cultural and historic significance of permanent body
modification arts. Featured will be examples of Hawaiian and other Pacific
Island tattooing traditions; contemporary tattooing and piercing, and the
Middle Eastern art of Mehndi (henna). A Question and Answer session with
invited artists will follow the panel discussion.

For more information about this and other events at the Utah Cultural
Celebration Center, call 801-965-5100 or visit culturalcelebration.org. This
program has received funding from the Utah Humanities Council. The Utah
Humanities Council promotes understanding of diverse traditions, values, and
ideas through informed public discussion

7) *Salt Lake Acting Company presents the regional premiere of the
provocative SKIN IN FLAMES by Guillem Clua*

This play is not recommended for younger audience members, due to sexual
situations and implied violence.

Salt Lake Acting Company (SLAC) is pleased to present the regional premiere
of SKIN IN FLAMES (LA PELL EN FLAMES), a provocative political drama by
Catalan playwright Guillem Clua, translated by DJ Sanders. SKIN IN FLAMES
will have preview performances January 30th and 31st, with the Press Opening
on Friday, February 1st at 8:00 PM at The Salt Lake Acting Company. SKIN IN
FLAMES is scheduled to play Wednesdays through Sundays through February 24,
2008.

SKIN IN FLAMES takes place in an unnamed third world country. All the action
of the play takes place in a hotel faded from its former glory, but still
preferred by westerners. Oddly, it is also the preferred spot for local
suicides, of which there are many, as it is the tallest building in the city
and therefore offers the surest end. This rather sad phenomenon is a dark
reflection on the nature of the current repressive regime and the degree to
which hope has faded from the country's population.

SLAC NOTES:

February 3rd- FIRST SUNDAY MATINEE POST-PLAY DISCUSSION: following the
matinee performance, hosted by SLAC Dramaturg Mike Dorrell in the Upstairs
theatre.

February 6th - 2nd Wednesday Preshow presentation: an introduction to
the play by SLAC's Literary Department.

FEBRUARY 18TH- NEW PLAY SOUNDING SERIES: at 7:00 pm

students and disciplines in a unique film project.*

The Foursite Film Institute announces the launch of the Foursite
Interdisciplinary Project (IDP). The IDP program allows Foursite to partner
with Weber State University students for its first collaborative effort.

filmmaking.

The 2008 project involves more then ten students from five departments at

The group will collaborate to create a dance-for-camera project which can be
likened to a music video but which shifts the emphasis away from the musical
artist to the movement and choreography of the dancers. (For a sample "dance
for camera" short film, click on this link:
http://foursitestudios.com/selfworthless/selfworthless.htm )

Production on the first ever Foursite Interdisciplinary Project will begin
January 4, 2008. The complete short film is slated to premier March 6 at the

Festival, which runs March 5-8, 2008.

In addition to its work with the IDP, the Foursite Institute will also be
holding summer workshops for high school students. Participants will gain a
big picture view of filmmaking, which includes pre-production, production,
and post-production.

The Foursite Film Institute is aimed at raising the quality of life of Utah
residents through the production, education and exhibition of quality
independent film produced in good taste.

11)* The SLC Film Center announces the Utah premiere of MEETING RESISTANCE*

With special guests Photojournalists and Filmmakers Molly Bingham and Steven
Connors

Who are the insurgents? What makes these people carry out unspeakable acts?

MEETING RESISTANCE is a chance to "meet" and hear first hand the reasons
behind the headlines.

Don't miss the opportunity to talk with Molly Bingham and Steve Connors and
hear their insight into the minds of the men and women joining the
resistance. After being held prisoner at Abu Ghraib prison, photojournalist
Molly Bingham returns with her partner Steve Connors to Iraq to interview
insurgents. The result is this daring, eye-opening film which provides
unique insight into the personal narratives of people involved in the
resistance - exploding myth after myth about the war in Iraq and the Iraqis
who participate. Through its unprecedented access to these clandestine
groups, MEETING RESISTANCE focuses the spotlight on the "other side",
clarifying why the violence in Iraq continues to this day and providing a
deeper understanding of both the toll of occupation and the human condition
of resistance.

WHAT: MEETING RESISTANCE

WHO: Special Guests Molly Bingham and Steven Connors

WHEN: 7pm, Friday, February 8th

WHERE: Orson Spencer Hall, University of Utah campus, 260
Central Campus Dr., Salt Lake City,

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Directed by Molly Bingham and Steven Connors 84 min
(2007) Not Rated

What would you do if America was invaded? MEETING RESISTANCE raises the veil
of anonymity surrounding the Iraqi insurgency by meeting face to face with
individuals who are passionately engaged in the struggle, and documenting
for the very first time, the sentiments experienced and actions taken by a
nation's citizens when their homeland is occupied. Voices that have
previously not been heard, male and female, speak candidly about their
motivations, hopes and goals, revealing a kaleidoscope of human
perspectives. Featuring reflective, yet fervent conversations with active
insurgents, MEETING RESISTANCE is the missing puzzle piece in understanding
the Iraq war http://meetingresistance.com/

Are Crime Novels Easier To Write Than "Serious"
Books?<http://books.guardian.co.uk/departments/crime/story/0,,2246733,00.html?gusrc=rss&feed=10>

Why is plot-driven popular fiction considered lesser than "serious"
literature? This is a strange time for the claim to be made, because the
boundaries between the two sides of fiction - which we can loosely call
literary and populist, although all of the terminology used in these debates
tends to be pejorative - is visibly breaking down.
