another consideration-are your horsed acclimatized to high altitude? also this winter we're having below zero temps here at the edge of the desert(SW Colorado)-it's been approaching zero in southern NM and AZ...wind chills of -20....lots of snow and wet weather-again, this is similar country to where you are headed, this is January-not the best conditions or time of year for travel unless necessary ..as to pack animal-just checked the local "shopper/trader" paper-lots of horses/mules for $200-$400....hope this gives y'all options to ponder,Mitch
