2)* Salt Lake Symphony Presents a "Musical Menagerie" January 19*
Take a safari through the animal kingdom with the Salt Lake Symphony on
Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 pm at Libby Gardner Concert Hall on the
University of Utah Campus. Led by music director/conductor Robert Baldwin,
the orchestra will perform a menagerie of music related to animals. This
concert promises to be delightful for all ages.
The program includes Camille Saint-Saens' "Carnival of the Animals,"
featuring poetry by Ogden Nash, read by KUTV meteorologist Roland Steadham.
Pianists Ning Lu and Jie Lu will join the orchestra for a double-piano
extravaganza (photo attached). Other pieces on the program include
selections from John Williams' "Jurassic Park," Ludwig van Beethoven's
"Creatures of Prometheus," Leroy Anderson's "The Waltzing Cat," and
selections from Alan Menken's "The Lion King."
In keeping with the Salt Lake Symphony's continuing commitment to community
outreach, the concert will feature outstanding student musicians from around
the valley in its annual Side-by-Side concert. Students will rehearse and
perform alongside Salt Lake Symphony members on "Creatures of Prometheus,"
"The Waltzing Cat," and "The Lion King."
Patrons can enjoy art in the lobby prior to and after the concert as part of
the Salt Lake Symphony's "Draw the Music" program. Salt Lake Symphony
members presented a program to students of Northwest Middle School art
teacher Jiliana Butler, and students were asked to draw their impressions of
the music. The resulting artwork will be framed and displayed at the
concert. Atelier Children's Art Center will judge the art and award prizes.
Admission to the concert is $8 for adults, $3 for students and seniors.
Tickets are available through KingTix at 581-7100 or
www.kingsburyhall.org.

3) *Salt Lake Acting Company presents the regional premiere of the
provocative SKIN IN FLAMES by Guillem Clua*
This play is not recommended for younger audience members, due to sexual
situations and implied violence.
Salt Lake Acting Company (SLAC) is pleased to present the regional premiere
of SKIN IN FLAMES (LA PELL EN FLAMES), a provocative political drama by
Catalan playwright Guillem Clua, translated by DJ Sanders. SKIN IN FLAMES
will have preview performances January 30th and 31st, with the Press Opening
on Friday, February 1st at 8:00 PM at The Salt Lake Acting Company. SKIN IN
FLAMES is scheduled to play Wednesdays through Sundays through February 24,
2008.
SKIN IN FLAMES takes place in an unnamed third world country. All the action
of the play takes place in a hotel faded from its former glory, but still
preferred by westerners. Oddly, it is also the preferred spot for local
suicides, of which there are many, as it is the tallest building in the city
and therefore offers the surest end. This rather sad phenomenon is a dark
reflection on the nature of the current repressive regime and the degree to
which hope has faded from the country's population.

4) *Bear River To Be Featured At St. George Art Museum Exhibit*
Exhibit coincides with release of book on the mostly natural river and what
the future holds for it.
The Bear River is a truly unique waterway. With increasing demands placed
upon it, or being considered, by various stakeholders, the Bear River flows
through the ecology it helps sustain amid the gathering clouds of global
warming, drought, and population growth.
University of Utah communications professor, documentarian, photographer,
and author Craig Denton has followed the sometimes rugged, sometimes lazy
course of the Bear River. The result is a recently published book and
accompanying photographic exhibit of the same name, Bear River: Last Chance
to Change Course. It opens January 12th at the St. George Art Museum and
runs through March 8, 2008.
Denton will be available to talk about his discoveries along the Bear River
and what he sees in its future in a free Art Conversation on Saturday,
January 12, 2008, at 1 p.m., at the St. George Art Museum.
A Reflective Nature from the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, an exhibit on
water birds, and A Legacy of Water from the St. George Art Museum's
Permanent Collection will be on view in the Mezzanine and Legacy Galleries
respectively to complete the theme of water in all exhibits.
All exhibits are sponsored by the Utah Arts Council, the National Endowment
for the Arts, and the City of St. George.
The St. George Art Museum is located at 200 N. & Main. Hours are Monday
through Saturday, 10-5 p.m., with 3rd Tuesdays until 9 p.m. Admission is $2
for adults, $1 for children ages 3 through 11. Kids under 3 are free. For
more information, call 627.4525 or visit

6) *The Utah symphony Presents Bach's Brandenburg Concerti Nos. 1, 3 and 5*
The Chamber concert will feature the Utah Symphony's Principal Pianist Jason
Hardink playing the harpsichord
Assistant conductor David Cho leads the Utah Symphony's principal pianist
Jason Hardink and the orchestra in a program that includes Bach's
Brandenburg Concerti Nos. 1, 3 and 5. The performance will be held at
Abravanel Hall on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at 8:00 pm. This will be the
first of two Baroque Chamber concerts featuring Bach's Brandenburg concerti,
with the remaining concerti to be completed on Thursday, May 15, 2008.
The program opens with Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 1, which imbues
vivacious energy, poignant dissonances and a rollicking third-movement.
Then, Hardink joins the orchestra for Concerto No. 5 from the Brandenburg
series, in which he'll play continuously throughout the piece as the
prominent musician eventually playing solo. The evening closes with Concerto
No. 3 featuring nine sections. At times, each section plays in opposing
units of sound; at other times the orchestra breaks up into nine separate
soloists; and sometimes all nine parts play together.
Tickets for evening performances are $25 and $35. Tickets can be purchased
by calling (801) 533-NOTE (533-6683), 1-888-451-2787, in person at the

by urging visitors to see Asian Highlandsí big cats at one of their

birdfeeders to take home for their winged friends who might need a full
tummy this time of year too.
Cats and Cocoa at Utah's Hogle Zoo-just one of the ways we're making Salt
Lake toasty from the inside out. Because whatís better than hot chocolate in

14) *BYU MOA Lecture to Explore the Life and Biography of Minerva Teichert*
WHAT: Robert Davis, senior curator at the Museum of Church History and Art,
will present a lecture titled "In (Her) Sight: Minerva Teichert's Vision of
a Public Art." In this richly illustrated lecture, Davis will highlight the
life and biography of Minerva Teichert to help the audience appreciate her
as a role model and grasp more of what she was attempting to accomplish in
her muralistic work. Admission to the lecture is free.
WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
WHERE: BYU Museum of Art Auditorium, Brigham Young University campus,
North Campus Drive, Provo, Utah 84602
WHY: "In 1988, The Museum of Church History and Art opened a 200-piece
centennial exhibition of the art of Minerva Kohlhepp Teichert. This
retrospective included an exhibit catalog, poster and prints, varied
educational programs, and a dramatized documentary film about the artist
produced by Brigham Young University," Davis said. "This led to a point of
view about this remarkable person and how many different factors contributed
to her grand vision of art, its purposes and its uses."
"Minerva Teichert: Pageants in Paint," presented by Zions Bank, examines how
the American mural and pageantry movements influenced Teichert's artistic
production through 47 of her large-scale narrative murals. Some of the works
in the exhibition come from private collections and have not been seen
publicly for many years. The exhibition also explores how Teichert's
personal dramatic flair contributed to the theatrical characteristics of her
murals of religious and western subjects. The exhibition will be on view
through Monday, May 26, 2008.

3) *Utah Symphony - Utah Opera Appoints Melia Tourangeau As President & CEO*
Following an extensive national search for an executive to lead the Utah
Symphony and Utah Opera, Melia Tourangeau has been appointed President and
Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Tourangeau, formerly CEO of the Grand Rapids
Symphony, will officially take the reins of the organization in late April,
filling the position previously held by Anne Ewers.
Utah Symphony and Utah Opera Board Chair Patricia A. Richards said, "This is
the beginning of an exciting time and we're very pleased to have a new
President and CEO with Melia's operational and administrative background,
her experience in strategic planning and marketing, audience building and
fund development." In addition to a Masters of Public Administration, she
holds a bachelor of Music Degree from Oberlin College Conservatory.
"She is one of the new breed of leaders who have combined studies of music
and management to address the needs of today's performing arts leadership,"
Ms. Richards said. "We were tremendously impressed with Melia's
accomplishments at Grand Rapids Symphony, her solid reputation, ambitious
vision, and public spirit," she added.
Ms. Tourangeau joined the Grand Rapids Symphony (GRS) in 1997, serving in a
number of capacities until being named president in 2005. Under her
leadership, GRS has balanced the budget and increased community support. She
executed the orchestra's debut at Carnegie Hall as part of the 75th
anniversary and successfully produced a Grammy-nominated CD and DVD. The
symphony has a budget of $8.5 million, a staff of 33, and 75 contracted
musicians.
She is also known and respected in the national arts community. Michael
Kaiser, President/CEO of the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, said, "Melia
is a highly gifted arts leader who has both clear vision and high standards,
an unusual combination. She has succeeded in building the strong community
and donor support needed by today's orchestras."

is interesting about the Australian conference is that more of the world, or
at least its interrelations, will be discussed."

A Colorao dance company uses YouTube video submissions for a choreography
competition. "The goal is that it will get people curious enough to go to
the theater, because there's no replacing live performance. It's amazing how
many people in the world have never gone to the theater or seen a live
performance. It's important to see how different that really feels."
