Do we have any proof, scripturally, that there was any sort of neutrality in the pre-existence? I don't remember any revelation that even hints that this third path was possible.

I know of some apocryphal "proof" - while working in the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute while a student at BYU, I was given the task of transcribing typewritten journals into the computer for easier reference for the historians who worked for the Institute. One of the journals I was assigned to was that of Mosiah Hancock, who may be most notable for being the son of Levi Hancock, one of Joseph Smith's bodyguards. He had a vision of the preexistence which I've always found fascinating.

Among the things he asserted was 1) that only men followed Satan, leaving an abundance of women because we originally were all paired up to attend our classes and things like that, and 2) that one-third of the host of heaven chose neither path and by default came to Earth.

Lots of other things were said, but those are the things I really remember. I did a little research on the Internet and I haven't seen that anyone else has the full accounting from that journal that I have (and kept copies of. Where, I have no idea. But somewhere I have a copy of it).
