I used to be pretty active on the AML-list, but have
(mostly) been lurking, due to my dissertation.
I guess having no AML-list will at least give me a few
more minutes everyday to finish writing the darn
thing.
The main reason I haven't renewed my AML membership
has to do with the fact that being outside of Utah
(I'm currently at the University of Texas - Austin)
makes it hard to feel like AML membership does much.
Irreantum is nice, but an online BB membership isn't
much of a draw. I can't afford to travel to Utah for
any AML conferences at the moment, most of my spare
time is spent writing a dissertation that is not
related to Mormon literature (and I have three kids).
20 bucks or whatever for membership isn't much, but
the bulletin board isn't enough of an incentive to
make me want to start paying dues again.
The list at least made me feel a little guilty for not
joining. Now all I will have to do is not go to a
website. The e-mail list was somewhat fun and the
nature of e-mail made it so I couldn't really ignore
it.
But most of that has been said already. My biggest
gripe is how the whole thing went down. Secret
meetings, almost no feedback period, a fiat handed
down from on high with assurances it's all for the
best and that those in charge are convinced it is the
best thing. You'd think socialists were running the
AML or something.
Have fun, y'all. Someday I may rejoin AML, once I'm
financially able to start attending the annual
conference. To me, that was the real benefit of
membership.
