The statement, "I can't afford $25," is a simple way for people to express a
cost-benefit analysis, or rather to express the true value of an opportunity
cost. You could spend yourself into bankruptcy spending "only $25" on just
one more thing. Money or time, it starts to add up after a while. You've got
draw the line somewhere, and setting a monetary value on something makes it
that much easier. This is what the New York Times discovered when it decided
to charge a "mere" $50 for "TimesSelect." Millions of people discovered they
could live without it, and the lost eyeballs cost the NYT more than they
made in cash. At least the NYT was distributing content from columnists
being paid for their efforts. Frankly, I wouldn't pay ten cents for the
"privilege" of posting on a listserv. There's something absurd and even
unethical about charging users to create user-generated content. That's why
Google hosts blogs for free.

I'm a little confused.

I'm doing okay financially, but honestly, is $25 per year really a hardship
for many prospective members such that they cannot afford to join? That's
about what it costs for a couple to go on a date to a sit-down restaurant,
and not anything fancy, either, and that's not even including a movie.

I'm committed to my writing. I spend more than $25 on things less
significant than the AML group. Perhaps this is why the AML seems to be
dying out, because it is not receiving support by those who claim to support
it.

Now I don't mean to stir up controversy by saying, "What, you can't afford
to join?" but, honestly, is $2 per month too much? How much do you pay for
an ink cartridge to pay to print out your writing for drafts? Heck, a
typical pen can cost $2. Isn't being a member of AML worth $2 per month?

I apologize beforehand if I offend anyone with this question, but I just
don't get it.

That may not have been the intention, but it is the end result.

I, too, can't afford to buy a membership I won't use for anything else, just
so I can participate on a discussion board that I'm not all that likely to
visit regularly. I may stop in every month or so, to read reviews and the
like, but I agree with others who have said that it's not much fun to read
discussions that you can't participate in.

If I had the time and energy for moderating (which I don't, not by a long
shot), I'd create an AML-Refugees list on Yahoo Groups. Maybe someone else
will do that. If so, let me know so I can join.

Farewell, AML....
