Steve P, the problem is similar to any culture that believes it has the
'answer' to life and its meaning. For instance, I remember a community
in the South where I lived for more than a decade. It changed so slowly
because the community culture acted as if it were the most perfect place
in the world. Thus when dealing with abuse (spousal -- which by the by
goes both ways; elder -- we turn our heads; gender -- particularly
difficult in patriarchal and matriarchal closed systems; child -- the
most terrible of all), the town powers normally looked the other way
unless it were so overt that it could be dealt with as an aberration,
rather than the all-too-normal pattern that it was. I remember that a
real problem of repeating child abuse by repeating offenders existed in
one of the LDS stakes on the west side of SL Valley. The leadership was
concerned about the image of the Church, about the impact on young men's
mission hopes, about the impact on the family image -- apparently,
according to the dozen or so folks with whom I spoke, about anything
other than the impact on the abused. Not for second do I ascribe this as
a natural phenomenon of the LDS Church. I have heard similar stories in
other cities and states, in secular as well as religious environments. I
believe that our adults in the US are not doing a very good job at
monitoring the issue. To deny that such problems exist, to deny that such
problems are more than minor -- those are the problems to which I refer.
In that sense, then the caricature of Ms. Beck's story has value in that,
even if her story is fictional, truth may still abide in it. James

James,
I didn't "catch" erog -- I was delighted by it. And please, would
you state "the problem in our culture" you refer to. I am not being
disingenuous; I can think of several possibilities from following the
thread, but I don't know what you mean and I'd like to know.
Thanks,
Steve P.

Steve P., thanks for catching 'erog' for me. That comes with
being dyslexic and failing to catch the mistakes. And, somehow,
I believe, you don't have to guess as to the problem. It
exists. The problem only in this thread is to what extent do we
assign a value, negative or positive, to Ms. Beck's work. James

James, I actually do hope "erog" becomes a word -- it was
very satisfying to read. Please state the "problem in our
culture" so I don't have to guess what you mean.
Thanks,
Steve P.

A caricature may be unintentional, and I am willing to
suggest that Ms. Beck has done exactly that. However,
even if her story is fictional in that it is false in the
facts, the story remains true in terms of the culture it
portrays. Erog, even if Ms. Beck is a liar, the lie does
not invalidate the larger truth. We have a problem in
our culture, and the fact is not that it is not going to
go away until we admit that it exists.
