Chris,
I think you would find a much more willing audience to
your ideas if they weren't couched in sometimes very
harsh terms. Your ideas are often good ones, but if
you feel like people on the List are treating you as a
hostile (and being rather hostile back), perhaps it's
because you don't realize how offensive you are being
sometimes. Scott Parkin, for example, is one of the
most level headed, fair people on the list. He's
earned a good deal of respect around here for that
fairness. As he said, he was giving good thought to a
lot of your ideas, because he looks at ideas fairly
and objectively, and there is some good sense in your
ideas, flavored as they are with sometimes offensive
hyperbole.
And to keep people like Scott on your side, please,
just tone it down it bit. I agree with R.W., things
seem a little tense around here lately. I know you
seem to see this all as a kind of civil debate, but
it's not translating that way. If you are so geared
towards knowing your audience and writing towards
them, please, apply that principle here. You seem to
think you know what sort of people we are and are
using us more as sparring partners more than anything
else. Well, I don't think most of us want to be blunt
instrument to sharpen your sword. Despite what you
said in your response to Scott (where you said
something to the effect that you were attacking ideas,
not people), you've been naming a lot of people by
name and trying to dissect their words (like you said
has been done against you) and then lambasting them in
some pretty personal and condescending ways. I know
you don't see it this way-- but, again, you need to
better understand your audience in this forum.
Again, I don't think there's anything wrong with your
ideas. It's your tone that is wearing me thin. Treat
us a friends and equals, then you may not get the
defensive postures some of us are taking.
In an attempt of sincerity and understanding,
Mahonri
