I too love Marvin Payne.

My childhood theme songs were culled from two albums,
Neil Diamond's "Jazz Singer" (specifically "Coming to
America" and a song that I remember as insisting, "you
bathe the baby, you bathe the baby now.") and Marvin's
"Planemaker." I liked the peppy song that talked
about getting your wings on. And I loved the joke
about bruising the baby on the hard blankets.

Then, to my great delight, in high school we did a
stage adaptation of the Planemaker. We were having a
hard time, though figuring out how to do all the prop
and set movement we needed to without darkening the
stage every 30 seconds. So i came up with the idea of
having little yellow people being the protagonist's
invisible helpers - and they became a part of the
plot! It was great. I even got to play the head yellow
(the one who transformed into a penguin - really
Marvin, how many Dr. Peppers had you guzzled before
writing that part?)

Sadly, our adaptation kind of fell on its face due to
the fact that our narrators didn't memorize their
lines. The yellows, however, were brilliant.
